Rugosa Basenjis

Breeder Talk
  • Does anyone know what happened to Rugosa Bs? I check the site periodically just to see what's up and look at her pictures, and apparently there was an accident and they've closed, at least temporarily. I've always loved her site - she's so devoted to the dogs and her pictures are so beautiful. Hope she (they) will be okay.

  • As it says on the website, there was a very bad car accident. Vickie is recovering and doing so much faster than any of her doctors had expected but it will be a long recovery. She is out of the hospital and back home with her family and dogs.

  • Thanks - I'm glad to hear she's doing well.

I talked to Vickie just the other day, and she is doing great. She is still recovering from brain injury related to the accident, but is very much getting back to 'herself'. She does have plans to be breeding again in the future, as long as her recovery continues to progress as well as it is. Good news for all of us, as she is one of the most thoughtful and dedicated breeders involved in the breed that I know :)

  • Thanks so much for the info. I don't know her personally, but it's always been obvious, even through the internet, that she's totally dedicated to the breed and her dogs. I'm very glad that she's doing so well and I hope that she able to continue breeding.

That is great to hear Andrea… thanks for posting it. Parry talks to her quite often too.... and she is a "breeder" to die for... IMO.... you could never go wrong...

  • Thanks for the update, Andrea, haven't read anything on the B-list for a while, and I have always admired Vickie.

Confused. Really. We have breeders listed in AKC, and in breed clubs. OFA maintains health certifications. Why reinvent the wheel? It's unlikely breeders who haven't tested or didn't report bad results will just open up to you. Then you have Sally's database...which is extensive. A look at her work on just Basenjis might give you an idea of the enormity of what you want to do. So I really must be missing what your reasons and goals are.

To the OP, unless you do health testing, and then get a title on your dog, your best bet is to not breed. To do it right will cost you more than you could ever get in stud fees unless he is phenomenal. To Rosie.. wow. No. Contact BRAT and adopt a dog. The fair thing to your dog is to love her, spay her and not risk cancer, dying or complications from whelping and other issues. The responsible thing to your children isn't to become a backyard breeder creating puppies, but to show them you actually CARE about animals and not produce more. Unless of course you are willing to fork over the money required to do all the health testing (this is not your vet saying "she's fine" but rather hip xrays, Fanconi DNA, thyroid, heart etc!) AND pay for stud service to a dog who has also been tested (good luck with that– most reputable stud owners don't just breed to anyone).

@Kipawa: I think most people will agree that neutering a dog does not spoil their spirit or temperament. More often, spaying or neutering results in a more calm, balanced animal. I agree, but we have lots of people on the Forum from over the "pond" and they have most different ideas about spay/neuter, different culture, different ideas…. and that is their right.... sometimes we all will need to agree to disagree..

Everyone pretty much already covered what I was going to say :) I spoke with Toni before I got my boy because I am from Maryland. I ended up going with a breeder in Florida because at the time, that's where I was living. If I were to get another basenji pup though, I would definitely go to Toni. She was so great at answering any/all of my questions & also was very forthcoming about information regarding her dogs & her home. She offered, more than once, for me to come see her dogs while I was back in Maryland for vacation last winter.

Ha, ha! It is a small world. Actually, Katie Campbell is the breeder :) But yes, I co-own the bitch with her. I will post more details later :)
