Weight of Basenji(s) parents: both about 26 pounds (mom's a bit plump)
Parents health tests: both parents hips OFA'd, both parent's eyes CERF'd, both parents will be Fanconi tested as soon as I can afford it.

Age when puppies will be ready to be taken home: He's ready to go now
Do you ship your Basenjis: I would prefer not to.

Rocky is a very handsome boy but he doesn't hold up conformationally to my standards as a show/breeding animal. He will be neutered. Rocky is housetrained and is current on all his vaccinations. He does not lift his leg or express any "embarrassing behaviors". He gets along in my pack but strange dogs can be a different story. Rocky isn't perfect but he will be a "Golden Opportunity" for the family he goes to live with.

I should be getting new photos soon and I will post them when I do.

  • We have one of Rocky's siblings, Jayden, and one of his cousins (?), Cory. We think the world of Robyn and her dogs!!! Our two Sherwood dogs are sweethearts and I would have to think that Rocky probably is also!!

  • I wouldn't mind getting another B, male is what I want. My question, since he doesn't get along with strange dogs, would he get along with my female, Sahara? Sahara is 16 months old and I am thinking he would be a good age for a playmate. Do you think he would fight with her, she is our joy and we would not tolerate another dog biting her. Sahara has been spayed, and she is very sweet.

Rocky and his sister Jozie are both very headstrong, determined dogs and when they both want the same toy they can "spat". It's just noise though and they break apart when I raise my voice. Placing Rocky with another headstrong or dominant/aggressive dog would not be a good idea but I think he would be ok with any dog who is easy-going and non-pushy. I would actually prefer he go to a home that has another dog since he has lived his whole life with multiple dogs and might be lonely as an "only child". The main reason that I prefer not to ship adult dogs to homes that already have an existing dog is that I want the two dogs to meet on neutral turf where I can observe their body language.

And Pat, thank you so much for your kind words. You and Larry are fablulous and I couldn't have asked for a better family for Cory and Jayden. 😃

  • I meant to point out one more thing - although Rocky's parents haven't been tested for Fanconi yet, I believe that all of the Sherwood dogs who have been tested have tested as being Probably Clear. Wasn't Rocky's and Jayden's grandmother Dallas Probably Clear? And, when I looked at the website for the grandfather's kennel, at least one of his offspring is shown as being Probably Clear. So I know I have felt reasonably confident that Jayden and Cory are likely to show up as being clear also. I just wanted to let people know for you, that this isn't an "iffy" bloodline!

Jayden and Cory are currently out in the backyard keeping the area free from squirrels but they send their love,

    Pat

  • I have both Sugar and Shadow from Robyn. Shadow is out of Clipper and Sugar is out of Shadow's brother. Sugar has tested clear and I expect Shadow will also. I have nothing but good things to say about Robyn's breedings. She breeds for health and it has shown it's there IMO. I have three and while there are spats, they quickly get sorted out. Since the two girls are maturing, the spats have slowed down. Also important to note, IMO a male and a female will tend to get along better than two bitches. Also, I find this breed tends to like their own colour-I don't know why, but IMO they do.

  • I have two Sherwood dogs also. Nicky,http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=789239#animal, has tested probably Clear and has passed all of his CHIC tests. Rally, http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1048448#animal, has also tested probably Clear and has passed all of her CHIC tests. Both are healthy and in good condition at 10 and 7 years old respectively.

If you are thinking about adopting an adult basenji companion for you girl, I would recommend seeing if you can fit a trip to meet the dog with your girl to see how the interact. Even if you add a puppy it is a good idea to have your adult come with you to meet the new puppy. Male/Female pairs in general are usually the best.

  • Thank you for your kind words Pat, Lisa, and Arlene. I have always placed health as high priority in each of my breeding choices and I am very pleased with the results. 🙂

Friends came over yesterday and we did a "show dog photo shoot" of some of my dogs. The following pics are of Rocky.

  • Wow, he is gorgeous…but all your dogs that I have seen are gorgeous!

  • OMG, what a face! he is a beautiful dog.

  • ohh if i lived a world closer… *sigh 🙂

  • He is a beautiful dog. Just curious and trying to learn here, what is it about him that you feel does not meet your conformation standards? Please be as descriptive as you can.

    Thanks,

    Jason and Miranda

  • Here is a link to a site by a respected breeder and judge from Austrialia… take a look and see if you all can compare the pictures (remembering that Robyn's are not professional) to the pictures/descriptions that are in the article

Tanza, I did follow the link you provided and read through it. It is one that I have read through before, but I am just not experienced enough to really know what might concern Robyn in regard to conformation, so I am hoping Robyn will answer in a post.

    Thanks

Honestly? There is no reason why Rocky could not be shown to his championship. He is as good as, or even better than, alot of what you see in the ring these days. That said, I will give you my personal opinion of what I see.

He has a nice head with good proportions, good earset, enough head wrinkle plus side wrinkle, black nose with dark eye rims and lip pigment, scissors bite, and a pleasing expression. He could use a darker eye and slightly more almond shaped eye.

I would like to see a little more length of neck though it looks worse in this photo than it really is in person. (He was scrunching down wanting to jump off the table.) He has a level topline and nice tail curl but his tail needs to be set higher. He has good rear angulation, very nice feet, stunning coat with rich coloration, and is squarely built. The big fault on Rocky lies in his front assembly. He has an upright shoulder and short upper arm and this restricts his front movement. This type of front assembly is very common in the show ring today and (unfortunately) he would fit right in. However, I do not feel this front assembly should be perpetuated and is the main reason why I feel he should be neutered.

That said, I have taken Rocky through 2 series of show handling classes and he gaits, stacks, and is easily examined. He enjoys being in the center of everything and would probably make a very good dog for Junior Handling or even a good "starter dog" for someone interested in learning to show but not breed.

  • Robyn, I would agree with you on your opinion… and that said, even dogs that finish their championship are not and should not be bred, IMO.... My male finished, never used... one of my girls finished, never used... another one of my boy's finished, collected but not used... every dog has their faults..

And totally agree with Robyn that one of the biggest faults we have today is the front end of the dog. Too many are way to straight in the shoulder and therefore hinders the front movement. So as breeders we take the best of what we have and breed to the best we can find to help resolve those problems...

To carry Robyn's comments a bit further, her line goes from moderate shoulders to straight... (and I am not picking on Robyn's dogs just expanding on her comments) so for her, to pick the best assembly and look for a match that not only has a good front, but is known to reproduce that front is what I am sure she is wanting to do.

The other fault I see way to much is low tail set and no "shelf". I have that problem in my line also.. Maggii was the "queen" of low tail set... (meaning it sits way to far back on the butt).. but she did have a good shelf. From Doreen's description of shelf:
"The tail is set very high and placed right on top of the hindquarters with the buttock curving out considerably beyond the root of the tail. This gives a strong reachy appearance to the hindquarters and is referred to as the "shelf".

Another thing I have seen too much of recently is a round eye instead of almond shaped...

All that said, I can forgive many things, but in the end, I am a "head" hunter... regardless how nice the dog/bitch is... I have a problem if they do not have a pleasing head.

  • One more comment about conformation…. another thing that really gets to me is that I want a dog to look like a dog and a bitch to look like a bitch...

There are too many doggy bitches and bitchy dogs.... I don't want to have to check the "plumbing" to see what the sex is.... ggg
