What a pretty girl! Her head/ears/face & wrinkles are Basenji-looking while her coloring & build suggest some Malanois blood–that would account for her size & aloofness, too. Our local SPCA does genetic testing as a fund-raising thing, if you're really curious you could try something like that...
Newwww dog!!

soooo last night we got our third basenji.. well technically our first..
Maggie was my boyfriends dog when he was with his ex. & the reason he got rocky. when they broke up, she took her. dan was heartbroken. for the past year and 3 months hes mentioned her, how he wanted to steal her back.. and all kinds of goofy stuff. when we first started dating, dan puppysat for a week and that was the last time he saw her.
last night a whole long drawn out story, which i wont get into to save everyone from reading a BOOK, (but if someone wants to know i'll share;) ) but after texting a friend about what was going on, dan decided to get her number and call her to see what was up. apparently her mom said she was gonna take maggie to the pound and bc shes never there, she cant do anything about it. so dan said "i'll take her." She may just be here temporarily, but she could also be here for good, depending on if his ex can find her own place or not.
after his ex dropped her off, we found over 25 ticks on her, because the mom left maggie outside. her ears are black around the rims, and you can see her ribs. Maggie was hit by a car in september, and had to have surgery on her back left leg, so she hops around and doesnt put much pressure on it. she cant really play with rocky and mia because of it. right now we have her in the living room, alone, until she gets used to our house again. her and rocky have growling matches but her and mia seemed to get along. (odd because she lived with rocky for almost a year) we gave her a bath this morning, and found 3 more ticks. dans calling the vet to make her an appointment to have her checked out.
man is she a talker rocky and mia are always so quiet.. and maggie HOWLS all the time! it really is adorable..
i took some pictures last night.. and ill upload them when i get a chance !
-
oh also, her nails were EXTREMELY long. we cut them last night too
rocky&mia wanting to get in! -
Poor baby, how fortunate you got her just in the nick of time. Hopefully she will integrate well with Rocky & Mia and get to stay with you. I would say document her condition, and the vet's record, and you could certainly prove that she was neglected, if not "abused" by being covered in ticks.
And I imagine your other 2 will adopt her into the family, basenjis can be very wise and welcoming to another basenji in need.
Good luck, and good for you both!
-
Oh, she is adorable! Poor little thing! I am so glad you guys have her, I hope she can stay!
-
She is lucky to be back with you.
-
I agree. i've been told that when dan's ex and her mother fight, her mom always uses the dog as a bargaining chip.
"ill leave her on the side of the road" "ill take her to the pound"
you get the idea.she got hit by a car because instead of holding onto the leash, her sister had it on her wrist while lighting a cigarette and maggie pulled and the leash fell off her wrist..
also im not sure of her age. she was bought from a pet store because a man didnt want her anymore and gave it to them. she didnt have papers so they gave her away for free. i know she had her in 2005, before she moved into my boyfriend's house. and she wasnt a puppy. so im guessing almost 4. probably born summer or fall of 04. shes the oldest none the less.

Poor girl.. Good thing you guys are willing to take care of her!
She's a lovely girl! -
She looks really sweet! If his ex cares anything about the dog, hopefully she will letyou guys keep her, cause obvisouly she isn't too interested in caring for her correctly herself.
-
Certainly I would put up a fight before returning her, since it sounds like she was a "bit" abused. Not so sure that the "ex" really wanted her to begin with….
-
I too would encourage you to document her condition when you got her. Too bad you didn't get pix of her with all the ticks. Hopefully the exGF won't give you any hassel for keeping her. Vet her, microchip and keep all the reconds of the vet stuff you've done for her. (That can be helpful to prove ownership.)
-
Definitely fight for her! She is a beautiful girl & it is so sad that she was neglected in that manner She is a lucky girl to have you & your boyfriend!
-
well i also just found this out..
dan went to the vet, and they told him that if his ex was to come in with maggie they would deny her service because she owes them 700 dollars. Dan picked up some vitamins from the vet and stuff for the ticks.. and some medicine for diareaha (however you spell it) shes gotta go see the vet in the next two weeks and get checked over. his ex also said she had her shots in january.. but the vet said she hasnt had any shots in TWO YEARS. we're going away for a week May 13-18 so im gonna try to get her in before then.
-
It is so great that you guys were able to get her and take care of her.
-
I'm so glad you and your boyfriend have her now, she's a lucky girl, and so cute! There's no way I'd give her back at this point.
-
You may want to add some probiotics to her food.

And slippery elm for the digestive upsets.
And feed small amounts, more frequently.good luck!

Remember that the general accepted schedule for shots now is 3yrs after the 1st year. This is for all shots…
So if she was vaccinated at 1yr of age, then she should be on a 3yr schedule.
You might want to read the thread on Titers. -

You might want to read the thread on Titers.Pat- My vet does shots every year (I've had both my dogs less than a year so both have gotten shots once from me/BRAT so far) so if I want to do them on a 3yr year schedule, do I just tell my vet thats what I want?
I feel like the vet tech/vet will argue with me if I say thats what I want.. anyone else have this problem with their vet?

That is exactly what you do tell them what you want.. you are the client… and you are paying.... just seach the internet for all the information on revised vaccinations schedules and 90% of the Vets are using that now...
If they argue with you, find a new Vet... just my opinion....

I love my vet, he doesn't think he "knows" it all.
When I brought my first basenji into him, this was about 100 yr ago we both learned what we needed to do to keep them well.
When my beloved Spike, came down with fanconis, it was so new to both of us, my vet called UC Davis to find out what we needed to do.
THAT is the kind of vet you need..one who works with you and listens when you say, "this dogs not acting right", without patting you on the head and sending you away with an expensive pill. -
