Morning at The Vet

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Chance went in early this morning to get Nutered. I should be bringing him home late this afternoon.
What should I expect. I know he will be groggy but for how long?
How long should he be under supervision and when will he be back to his old self again? Kiya just loves to horse around with him and its going to be tough keeping her from picking on him while he is under the weather.

Kiya also had her check up and we were told that she has allergies. Her eyes and ears get really pink throughout the day. The vet was not concerned about the allergies. Should we be concerned? She was given her Rabies and Bordatella vaccine. Man did she squeek. Right after the shots, the injection site became really tendor and she began to wimper and try to scratch it. Poor girl. :(

  • Depending on what sedatives they used he may not be very groggy. Neither Nicky nor Rally were really "groggy" when I picked them up from their surgeries. They were sore and wanted to sleep. Once Nicky woke up the next morning he was pretty much convinced he was fully healed and should be playing like a puppy. He was 7 years old when he was neutered.

  • As far as the shots on your girl, please watch them.. I usually always give benadryl before rabies shots… and also I never have any other shots given with rabies... Watch for a reaction and since she already was have a problem at the injection site, I really would watch it. I have seen Basenjis get really nasty sores at injection sites from Rabies... and you might want to just give her a Benadryl. Not sure that I would just automatically say she has allergies cause her eyes are red? However, it is surprising that the vet didn't seem to be concerned? I would be.. could be food related? Could be something in the house (being new)...

As far as Chance, he should not be too groggy after being neutered, depending of course on what they give him? Did you ask about the anesthesia they use?... but he will NOT want her around him.. and you need to make sure he has peace and quiet. And whatever you have to do... she needs to be "contained" By morning as Lisa says he should be pretty much OK.. if he tried to do too much, like jump on the couch, etc... most likely he will "sqeak..."

  • We talked with the vet this morning and we requested that a blood panel be taken before surgery just in case.
Kiya's eyes were not red this morning so the vet did not think too much of it. Her eyes get red in the afternoon/evening…along with the inside of her ears too.
Literally right after the injections, Kiya started to scratch and cry. You could tell she was in pain. The vet said that she would calm down after 15 min and she seemed to be ok.

I would still give her a benadyrl.. if she were mine… and you know honestly.. shots really should not cause that much pain....

What kind of anesthesia are they using for Chance? Sighthounds are sensitive to anesthesia

  • Dallas had/has a big bump from the rabies injection site. Luckily I found something about that being common before getting too freaked out! My vet said not to give him Benadryl after the shot but again, as you all know, my vet kind of stinks. I'm looking for a new one before getting Dallas neutered in 2 months.

As you have seen a bunch of us post, we usually give the benadryl before the shot… and after if there is a problem with itching... however, that said, it would not and does not stop the lump for those that get them.... I would say that 1 out of 3 get a lump from the rabies shot that can take 3 to 6 wks to go away.

Did you Vet give you a reason?_

  • @tanza:

Did you Vet give you a reason?

He just said it wasn't necessary. I mentioned to him that I had "friends" with basenjis who recommended it prior & after the shot but he said it isn't necessary & that rabies shots have been used on millions of dogs & do not 90% of the time cause any side effects so unless he shows signs benadryl is just adding something unecessary to his system…

Have I mentioned how much I like this vet before?

Well, not to defend your Vet.. but in a way he is right… it is just that many of us have seen B's with a reaction..... so in the end he is just "covering" his "behind".....

  • My vets will give a shot of benadryl if I ask for it before vaccines. I try to remember to give the oral myself because it is so much cheaper. It seems naive to me for a vet to say 'well, these are pefectly safe, benadryl is un-needed' until they see how a dog reacts.

  • Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.

Sorry to hear that Oakley went though this, but I have to say thanks for posting about this. I use Xylitol for my own baking/sweetening while I'm dieting… looks like I'll only keep the Stevia in the house... in the highest cupboad!

I live in the east suburbs of Pittsburgh. I take my B to Norwin Veterinary Associates. Ask for Dr. Harvey Bendix, if he is available. He diagnosed Senji with his liver disease and basically saved his life. He's open to alternative as well as traditional medicine.

Is there anyone out in the New Jersey area (or knows of a site that I can be directed to) who knows of any vets that have knowledge of Basenjis? We have a 4 month old Basenji and our breeder took her to the vet at 8 wks but she hasnt been to one since so I've been looking for a good vet for a standard visit and cant seem to find one who knows about Basenjis (well all the vets Ive talked to, act like they know about them but you can tell they've never had one as a patient ;0 Thanks for the help!

@CrazyBasenjiMom: Thank you Jason, we did do a round of the flagyl, and an antibotic, and the flortiflora, we followed the course and had improvement, In thinking back, dumb me, I introdcued a new treat for trainning purpose and this may be the root of evil, I'm giving them away tomorrow, what would you suggest for the "bribe treat" we are sitting and staying, leave it is a slow to come and when I call him he doesn't alwasy come, this boy was really brutalized, scared of doors, if you try and pet him he still ducks and backs off, he has high anixety, paces, he eventually calms down with singing and lavender on his nose…..I want to keep it simple " boys are exactly 10 months old, My Belle will be 2 and she is on Wellness whitefish and sweet potatoe, seems she is board with it now, not eating as much, she want the pups food. I have to seperate them. Whew, who knew, I'm crazy for these 3 but it is hard work. Tomorrow is dog blessing at our church....hope it takes..... Sounds to me like this boy has really had it rough. I am sure he will eventually warm up with a lot of patience and love from you. He is very nice that you have given him the opportunity to have a wonderful and loving home. As you know Pacing seems to be part of the Basenji makeup. When mine gets ready to go out he does pace back and forth or will walk in a circle around me until I stop and leash him. He will also pace back and forth if he thinks I am going to take him somewhere. Recently I picked up a rescue dog for transport that appeared to have been abused, neglected, and half starved to death. Her name happened to be Bella also. In the short time she was in my care, I made sure she was comfortable and had plenty to eat. On a leash she was somewhat skittish so she ended up staying close. Before she left us she was licking us affectionately and rubbing up against our legs. She went to a nice foster home and is a lucky girl in that respect. It really upsets me and breaks my heart to see dogs abused, starved, or put in harms way. I could never be a foster home for a dog because I know I would want to keep all of them. I am not suggesting that you change Belles food, but when we had our Boston decide she wanted some of his puppy food it made it easier to change to EVO for us. Inova EVO feeds the same food from puppy to adult so there is no change except for the amount. As far as treats go. I have had great success training with plain regular Cheerios. Generic Cheerios will do and I believe there is another here who has had success with them as well. They are very cheap and our dogs seem to love them even to this day. If you call him he likes Cheerios, then you can give him one every time he does come and that will make it a positive experience for him. Another Treat we use is called No Grainers. It is 100% Grain Free, made in the USA(Springville UT), made with fish and is all natural. I think you will find your pups really respond to this one. Roo is sitting here with his head on my knee because I put the bag on my desk so I could get information off if it. So far we have found the cost on the No Grainers pretty reasonable. We use a product by Vitalife, however I did find that when Roo was younger his digestive system had issue with these so I discontinued feeding him them. Now that he is older, his digestive system has matured and he appears to handle them with no problems. They are called Chicken Chips. They are 100% Chicken and very high in protein. In fact the manufacturer suggests you limit the amount you give of these to your dog in one day based on weight. They are 64% Protein. They even have a money back guarantee. So you cannot beat that but I would wait until after he is a year old. They do make other versions like duck, but again better tolerated if he is older. Last but least, we recently found another chicken product by Dogswell called Vitality with Omega 3's. Basically it is Chicken Breast Jerky with Flaxseed & Vitamins. It contains NO Hormones, NO Antibiotics, No Fillers, and NO Byproducts. It is from Cage free all natural chicken what ever that means. This product is the highest in protein at 70% min. Suggested feeding is 2 to 4 per day for dogs 15-45lbs. Ok now Roo is laying on my feet hoping for one of these treats so I better go give it to him. At least he is not pawing my leg or doing the Basenji Pogo without a stick. Roo and Bonzo line up and sit right next to one another everytime I get these treats out and almost cannot contain themselves. Jason

@Phebese: We take Max to the Banfield in the Petsmart on Cobb Pkwy in Acworth. We have gone to many different veterinarians but only found two that we feel comfortable with. We have the Banfield insurance which really helps, but most importantly he is comfortable going there and we trust them. He has been there twice in the past couple of weeks getting a cyst removed. They call in between appointments to check on him and see if we have any concerns. We do not like all the Banfield clinics, in fact the one on 92 we did not like. Another good vet is Randy Esbeck at Sawnee Animal Clinic 770-887-1900. He is a Basenji specialist. It's in Cumming Georgia. It's just to far for us to go. Good Luck, Max's Mom (Emily) As they say, it is not the place but the Vet that is working there…. so while many of the Banfield clinic might not be good, when you luck into a good Vet.. that makes the clinic...
