  • Hi All!

I have enjoyed the threads on the forum for the last few months. My husband & I live with our basenji's in Orange County California (I have 5). These dogs are a real hoot! We have learned to be pack leader's with are gang and spent coutless hours training. Basenji's are fun dogs to watch and be a part of their lives. My dogs like to go camping & fishing with us too!

One funny thing I was wondering: All my dogs feet smell like corn nuts or dorito's chips! I was wondering if anyone else noticed that with their basenji's feet?

I've read that a lot on this forum – usually it's fritos. I don't think my dogs' feet smell like fritos, but their bedding does. I have to wash it frequently cuz I can't stand the smell!

  • Welcome to the forum, can't wait to hear more about your bunch and to se pictures.

Both my guys (basenji and boxer) have the frito toes but manly when it's warmer out.

  • I haven't noticed that smell before, but Medjai's coat smells like smoke. (almost hickory)

  • Great now I am gonna have to start huffing my puppy's feet :) LOL…...Welcome please get us some pictures....we are all addicted!!!!

  • Yes! Lenny and taydas paws definitely do smell like corn chips… i love it.

  • Welcome to the forum. I've never noticed my dogs feet (and I don't intend to start smelling them now :) ) Pictures when you get a chance – we're addicted to pictures.

  • I notice the smell most strongly when Zip is real sleepy, like just waking up. And I hadn't noticed the smell coming from just her toes, I smell it on her coat as well.

  • Welcome to the pack. Can't wait to see pictures!

@jagali Its wonderful how an older Basenji will accept and bond with a puppy. We bought in Mku when Hoover's older half-brother died and she went into a decline. Utter misery ! However within a very short time they were soul-mates, he brought her back to almost puppy-hood, certainly to life-enjoyment and mischief. She taught him survival life-skills and how to gang up on Mom - Sadly Hoover herself left us a couple of weeks back and now I have a lonely wee Mku - I guess there is only one thing for it though . . . LOL

What a sweet little boy–having a non-basenji sister/brother is great, it gives them a "positive role model"!

Wow - your 5th! See I had a sense there you had some major B experience ;) We picked up Jack early that day, think we might have been the first to arrive, and only met one other man picking up a little girl, Stella, he lived in NY city I think. I think there was another couple arriving just after we left for the other little boy in the litter, that might be who you saw. I tell you when I walked in, I was just completely in awe of all those precious pups! So tiny, I just did not picture so tiny! We are on Doris's list for a little girl if we are lucky out of a breeding this fall. Jack needs a playmate!!! Well so nice to connect with you and hope to continue to do so. Good luck with your shows!

@longshot: Yes, I would love to adopt him myself… but I am a first-time dog owner, and I am a little intimidated by the reputation of the Basenji --even though in this case he is 1/2 Pug which has an "easier" reputation. Are they sure he is a basenji mix or are they just guessing based on the curly tail and erect ears? He looks more like a Chi mix to me. I just found out on Monday the new "hybrid craze" is the "chug" a Chi x Pug. http://www.flickr.com/photos/troynielsen/2236562915/
