Bad dog food

Basenji Talk
  • There's a thread on the forum somewhere about food and nutrition and if I remember correctly, if the corn is at least low down on the list of ingredients that is much better. Chicken or lamb or some such should be the main ingredient if you buy commerical. Please correct me if I'mwrong.

  • I think you all are right. Just my little girl gets a rash from any little thing that you feed her i know Purina One is not the best but the chicken and rice seem to do well w/ her. I would like to put her on something better but w/ everything going on right now money is a little tight.

  • dogs prefer beef and pork to chicken and lamb.
but i read a story where a siberian husky pup was seperated from his mother too early and refused to eat premium dog food. after trying fresh and raw meat liver and other organs the owner called the breeder to ask what she fed the mother. it turns out the mother ate mostly fresh fish and the puppy didn't understand that anything other than fish and milk were actually food.

  • @Gooby:

That is not true that dogs prefer beef and pork? Where did you hear that?

  • The beef and pork thing is definately not true with my dogs and not my experience with dogs in general. Where did you hear that? My dogs really like duck. Organ meat is usually a pretty high value item also. My dogs prefer the Natural Balance Turkey rolls to the Beef rolls.

  • I read the beef and pork thing in "How Dogs Think" by Stanley Coren. He is psychololgist of both people and dogs and internationally accredited. The story about pork and beef comes from study in a maryland university, I don't have the book in front of me so I can't tell you which. That book also contains the story about the huskey and goes on to say that dogs love food, period.

  • I can understand what you described about the husky pup Goober, I have noticed with all my dogs that if it is something completely new and they have never smelled it before they will either sniff it and walk away, or sniff it and taste it.

But I have never known anything about the thing of where dogs prefer beef and pork versus other meat. I wouldn't say that it is untrue, I think it's a more individual dog type thing. Even in the wild, canines eat poultry/fowl and fish on top of game meats deer/bear/goat/elks what ever else is out there. What they eat of course is based on the area in which the wild canine lives.

Also, they will just eat things so other dogs don't, learned that with Tiggy today LOL he ate a carrot so Reggie wouldn't eat even though he had no interest in the carrot and Reggie was just standing near by, Reggie WILL NOT eat raw carrots so he showed no interest in it, Tig ate it just so Reg wouldn't

Stanley Coren also published a book on dog intelligence that ranked basenjis near last but if you look at his experimental design he was really looking at tractibility and not necessarily intelligence. So it would depend on the experimental design. I would say that dogs love food and anyone who uses food as a motivator can tell you different foods have different values to different dogs. They each have preferences and those preferences can change over time. My obedience instructor's Border Terrier turns her nose up at anything containing pork and is not overly fond of beef but loves poultry.

As for veggies, mine love carrots, beans, apples, and watermelon. The also like orange juice but not oranges and banana chips or dried banana but not fresh banana.

  • IMHO, lumping all dogs food preferences together isn't any different than trying to lump all people's food preferences together. Some people like beef, some don't. Some people like pizza, some don't. Some people LOVE chocolate, some don't (although I can't understand why). In my experience it's the same thing with dogs.

  • Something the government doesn't want you to know is that there are no people who don't like chocolate. The people who don't are really robots.

I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

The problem becomes if you are a meek or hyper person in general, that the dog sees through you and it is very hard to pretend to be something you are not 24/7. This where you can learn from your dog / training and take some of the good for yourself. Being a strong leader, fearless, calm & in control. Who could not use some of these qualities?

Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

My Hollie girl eats from the bowl sometimes and sometimes she takes a few minutes to another room. She constantly "hides" her dogfood, in corners, under a doormat, under my bed pillows, etc. I don't know if this is something that all basenjis do, or if it is because she had been a stray when I adopted her. Either way, she is certainly entertaining.
