Same thing applies over here. No more puppies now until winter 2021 breeding season. If you email me privately, addresses are in the websites on my signature block, I will send you a list of breed club secretaries. Tested parents will appear on the OFA websites @tanza told you about. We use OFA to test our dogs too.
Patience is now the name of the game, but you should be able to get onto a breeders list for a puppy early 2022, February or March

@Roxy:
Anyway, Roxy is the kind of dog that just needs to be bred.
I'm not sure what that statement even means.
You'd be better off having your friend contact a local breeder, or BRAT to get a dog that is already here, or at least has been bred by a knowledgable person. Breeding a dog with a totally unknown health history and genetic background is generally considered a completely irresponsible way to breed any dog.
I don't think you'll find what you are looking for here.
-
Let me do this another way…
PM me for contact info
I've never bought a dog in my life. This is my fourth dog in nearly 40 years. My first dog I got at a flea market when I was 7 years old. I had it until I was 15 years old when my mom made me drive it to the vet and have it put to sleep because the adults in the house didn't care for it properly. I vowed on that miserable day that I would never let any animal in my care ever get hurt.
My second dog, I got when I was 16-Friends of Strays. I bought him for my dad who was depressed. He loved the dog, but got pretty mad at me. When I left home at 17 years old...I took the dog with me because it was the responsible thing to do. I knew my dad didn't really want it and even if I had very little money, the dog needed to come with me. The dog ate better than I did most days! I had it until I was 32 years old...I thought I would die when he finally passed away him.
My third dog (and the only pure bred) I rescued from my 25 year old nephew's backyard after he died in a motorcycle accident. It was a 115 pound Rotweiler and I was scared to death it would eat me, but I went and got it...brought it home and cared for it. Paid THOUSANDS for medications, surgery, etc. Was sick until the day she died...poor thing! I got it spayed to make SURE it didn't breed!...because it was soooo unhealthy and because it was the responsible thing to do.
My fourth dog-found outside of the wing house...I'm guessing the irresponsible breeder let her bitch get pregnant and decided not to care for the entire litter...if I would have found the rest of the pack they'd be with me too! I risked my Navy career hiding that dog from my Chain of Command to rescue it...irresponsible, I guess...according to the above poster.
Whatever.
So...based on my record of responsibility, I'm asking a breeder to let me breed this AMAZING dog because we could use 100 more like her (although 4-6 will do nicely)...and if they were all like her, there wouldn't be so many give aways! I would allow her to have one litter and then get her spayed.
Here's the deal-my teen-aged boys have never experienced raising a puppy of their own. Why? Because their mom has always been too busy taking on other people's responsibilities. Because their mom wouldn't buy a puppy from a strip store or in the mall...no matter how many cuties the boys dragged me to see. We looked at all kinds of puppies for nearly two years when I found Roxy. She was about 9 months old. My boys knew we'd be getting a dog-they just thought it would be a puppy.
My dog is very healthy. She's beautiful and smart and simply AMAZING.
If you'd like to help me out, please pm me
There's not a chance in hell I would ever abandon, get rid of or decide not to care for any animal I come across let alone one I helped bring into this world.
This may not be how breeders normally do things, but really-what is this going to hurt?
-
Whoa!!! Slow down!! NO ONE said that rescuing and caring for animals is irresponsible. The discussion was NOT about abandoning or not caring for an animal.
The discussion was about intentionally breeding a dog about whose health history you know nothing, and It can hurt a lot.I'm sure the breeders on the forum will explain better – I am not a breeder, just an owner of amazing, beautiful, healthy dogs also.
There are genetic illnesses that can be carried from one generation to the next - Fanconi is just one very serious disease that Basenjis, in particular, are prone to. Without knowing the genetic background of your bitch, you could be helping to continue passing bad genes down to future generations, not to mention handing the new owners of your puppies dogs with medical problems that you just didn't know about.
Please look around the forum for posts on responsible breeding practices, necessary tests, etc. to be sure you have an animal that is genetically healthy enough for breeding.
-
From previous posts from people "in the know"
Everyone looking for information on Genetically Inherited Disorders in Basenjis should make sure to visit the Basenji Club of America website, http://www.basenjiclub.com/?q=node/17 It has information on Basenji Health Concerns as well as updates on breakthroughs in research to find genetic markers or the genes for these diseases.
Also people interested in Basenji Health should visit (and consider a donation) to www.basenjihealth.org (The Basenji Endowment)

I agree with JazzyMom. I'm not sure why you wouldn't find it better to rescue a puppy or contact a breeder for one of their puppies. There are numerous young pups available if that's the experience your children want and you're willing to commit to… Or that your business partner wants.
So some questions for you...
Why do you feel the need to have your dog get pregnant?
Do you want the birthing experience?
What about the puppies she creates? Are you going to keep them?
Or try to sell them?
Do you think all the puppies will have her personality?I'm a little confused as to why you feel _your _dog should be bred. IMO, I think pure bred dog breeding should be left to responsible breeders who devote the majority of their lives to doing so and who commit to testing the health, wellness, temperament, etc of their dogs. If you're looking for a puppy, by all means, you can find help here but I'm not sure this is the place to find a stud.
This forum loves pics so if you plan to stay around, please post pics!
-
Please post pics of Roxy.
I'm sure the breeders on the forum will weigh in, but also, you said you thought Roxy was a mix and not a pure bred. I don't think a responsible breeder would intentionally breed a pure bred to a mix.
-
This whole issue is so interesting….Pure bred dogs vs mixed breed muts. THis is the first time i have ever heard of anybody asking for a purebred dog from a breeder to sire pups of a mixed breed female mutt. thinking back to my childhood, a hundred and fifty years ago, to when most ppl had mutts and only rich people had purebred dogs. heh i would love to see a picture of this basenji who was running with a wild pack eating spicey chicken wings. heh
-
Well…there will be no breeder here willing to 'help out'. No responsible breeder will stud their dog out to a possible basenji mix bitch, because someone wants puppies just like her....
are you by any chance, a troll? This sounds like a text book troll post to get everyone all fired up
If you aren't a troll, I apologize, and would direct you to the many threads here about why breeding is a huge responsibility, it is something you do to preserve and/or improve a breed, not because you love your dog, and you want to see ones just like her; or because your kids want to see the miracle of birth; This in no way impunes your integrity as some one committed to rescue...but honestly most rescue people will shudder to read your post.
Refusing to stud to your bitch has nothing to do with outwaivers, or liability, or reputation...it has to do with not protecting the breed. Caretakers of the breed just don't do that
-
Please read this post, http://basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=613
There is more to good health then current condition of the dog. Your girl has not led an easy life. If there was trouble with the pregnancy are you prepared to lose not only the puppies but Roxy as well? Even when a dog is bred who has been given the best care and everything is done right, there is a risk to the dam.
If you love this breed and the traits that Roxy has brought into your life, then the best thing you can do for her and yourself is become educated about the breed. Here is the personal experience of someone whose heart was forever captured by the breed because of a mix, http://www.apubasenjis.com/thestoryofapu.html

Very well put Andrea… and I would vote for a "Troll"..... buy a movie if you want your kids to see birth.. but make sure you get the one where there are whelping problems, trips to the ER Vet... C-section, loss of pups, Mom or all... the say you just want them to see "birth of pups"... that is NO reason to breed, period... along with the fact that you are breeding a dog that has no health testing, not even sure what kind of dog, and way to young if what I read was correct and this bitch is only 9 months old.... As was said you will find no RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS that would stud their dog...
-
I already got an email. Maybe things will work out.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the pure breds with the most health problems. Inbreeding tends to do that. While I'm not a dog breeder, I did pass 9th grade biology.
The above posters write as if their opinion of me matters. It really doesn't and "real" dog rescuers…whatever that is...whether or not they choose to breed a dog-not my issue!

too
not a troll, but not a snob either…sounds like we could insert "profitable" for "responsible" on this thread!
Wow, I'm feeling sorry for these dogs. Make yourself sound like experts and then believe each other. I'm a farm girl so all of this whelping junk and ER stuff is a little funny.
And, not only don't you know two from to from too...you're not a good reader either. 9 months when I found her.
I'm done here. If your answer is "no, I can't help" you don't need to respond.
WOW-what a response. Get out much? Rhetorical.

How incredibly rude and heartless. To belittle the experience of someone who did have to take their dog to an emergency vet at 3am who was told one pup was already dead and a second probably would be dead by the time surgery occured. I am sorry but even nearly 1 year later, such a careless and insensitive statement has me near tears thinking about the black and white boy that was born alive via C-section at the emergency vet but whose heart just gave out from the stress. That loss will always sting and every day I am so thankful to still be have my girl and to have her lovely daughter and visit be able to visit with her two living sons.
-
Roxy- I'm not a breeder and am not as knowledgeable about Basenji's as the very smart people on this forum, but aside from that I would like to say you are very rude and immature, simply put. Insulting breeders and owners on this site is uncalled for. These people are trying to help you and the breed.

QUOTE]Not buying that line either. A real farm girl would have seen problem pregnancies in animals of all sorts –farmers often lose puppies, calves, foals, kids... you name it, and would know that these people know what they're talking about.
It's wonderful that after owning four dogs in 40 years you are an expert as to what dogs are best for breeding, and which dogs carry the most genetic problems. Takes most breeders a while to gain that much expertise!

I'm really sorry that someone would even write something like that given all you went thru and shared w/everyone about your whole experience. The comment was totally out of line. I read your original thread long before I was a member here and long before I had Ruby, and it still makes me sad to think about it…and I didn't personally go thru it.

I didn't see the first post…but the reactions from knowledgable members makes it sound very bad indeed.
This person wants to breed a mix basenji?
Why? Was that ever answered? -

This person wants to breed a mix basenji?
Why? Was that ever answered?Because her dog (Roxy, a mix) was "wonderful and there should be 100 more like her)." Also, her business partner wanted one just like her and her kids wanted a puppy and she wanted them to experience the birth process .
Since the original post was deleted by her and all of her subsequent ones as well, I'm guessing that answers the question about a "troll". I'm no basenji, but the whole thing didn't quite pass the "sniff test" :D.
-
Or the smart test.
Mixes don't throw true re puppies yes?
Purebreds are the ones who's pups look like the parents.
