Gross Question

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hello- for those of you who have females, do you ever have to clean their bits? Our vet has recommended that every once in a while, we "help" keep our little girl clean. Does anyone else have this issue? It's totally gross, I know. But if we let it go, she gets reddish/brown gunk that cakes up around her bits- which is even more disgusting. Just wanted to know if there were others out there- is this a malformation? :(

  • Every basenji I have ever had was able to keep themselves clean.
Did she come from a place where the crates/kennels were not clean?

  • I never had this issue with my german shepherd mix (I had her for about 12 years) nor Zoey–but I've only had Zoey for a few months now.

  • I've noticed with Jazzy after her heat cycles that she sometimes had a bit of dry "build-up" around her self deep in the creases where I imagine it was hard to reach. I just made sure to rinse the area well when I bathed her.

I haven't noticed it since she was spayed so much.

  • Is she still intact?
    Or has she been spayed?

  • She's spayed and very petite. And she only gets this in the deep creases.

  • Both Sugar and Dimisi are fastidious cleaners of their private parts. Every once in a while-Shadow doesn't really like cleaning himself-I put a little corn syrup(I'm talking about a dabbing of it) around his private area to facilitate himself cleaning himself.

And just because she can "chew" on the other side, food stuffs and bacteria can still get in through the bad tooth. Honestly, not something to put off….. the sooner the better

@agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

I got worried giving kiro so many bones, so i would take lots of old shoe laces and tie them in her crate on the side.ONe big sting with tons of THICK knots and let her pull it off and that kept her busy. You just have to make sure they wont swallow it. (she didnt) and make the knots big and thick. she loved the challenge of getting them off the side of her crate. it helps if your worried about to many bones…..

Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
