There's a new girl in town…

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • If her registered name is Fayrelyn Tyger Ella, why not just call her "Tiger" (either spelled "tiger" or "tyger")?

  • Mia is a fine name! Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) all about how it went!

We have ended up calling her Miah, with the H. And she is taking to it well. She had not learned any part of her registered name.

We took our two dogs to Brisbane with us to see Miah and arranged with Freda to meet at a fenced off-leash dog park, which worked out great. It gave us extra time to talk about everything we hadn't covered over the phone.

I have a few new pictures…she's still in that awkward "what's that thing you have in your hands" phase where she won't sit still for the camera or does a goofy look. :p

  • Wonderful Pictures And Congrats Again

  • She's soooooo cute!!! Congratulations. I've always loved the name Mia…I wouldn't worry too much that her name isn't African...she's a cutie pie! :D

    She's adorable!!! Congratulations…I think the "h" is nice. I like it1;)

  • Well funny you should mention you call her Mia…we named our pup Mia Pharaoh, part for the actress and part because she's from Africa, we thought it was fitting and people seem to think it's clever :)

  • @Channie:

Well to be terribly boring my partner has decided to stick with the name Mia (which I still think is a pretty name) but has decided to be really clever and add an H to the end - Miah. From my two minutes of research online however I've found this is Italian for Mine, to hold dear…which is sweet. Not exactly African or even relevant but I like the name none the less.

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions. We're picking Miah up today at 11am - very exciting!! I'm sure we'll have some pictures of her up on the net very soon.

Yeah, I had the same situation… I wanted to give her an african name, but I am Italian and my husband fell in love with the name "Bella Bambino Biamondi" and since she was a gift from him...
So, here is the meaning: Beautiful Baby BOY!!! Okay... I ooopsed:rolleyes: My Italian language knowledge is obviously lacking. She should have been Bella BAMBINA (the "A" makes it feminine)! LOL:D But the papers were already done!!! Oh well...;) Oh, and Biamondi was a family name before we came from Sicily.
I absolutely adore the name Miah, and she is just as adorable as her name!

  • Okay, once again… I got started on an older post!!! Duh:confused:

Exactly, and if you can't get the food, then get some good probiotic like fastrack and give it with meals… will probably be fine. :)

LOL when we were getting Sayblee, Leora had me on the net and we came up with 100 potential names. I picked my top ten and she crossed them all off. (she was about 9 at the time) She picked Sayblee. So Sayblee became my dog but I insisted on naming the next one, hence Arwen. But it turned out good since she doesn't yodel, but gives a very clear loud R a lot.

Had dogs all my life, Rotties for 22 yrs, first basenji only 9 yrs ago so relative newbie to basenjis… not dogs. Almost all dogs and babies is a question of training and the owner, not the dog. If you are going to wait for a child a few years til the basenji is an adult, then you should have the dog trained by then. Socialize the heck out of it with infants to children. Prepare. Chewing... bwahahahaha. Okay, ahem. Someone on the aol rottie board said how much did one cost and the breeder said.. I don't know, how much is your home furnishings worth? Some never stop, some never stop but slow down to the absolute irresistible items, some stop. Plan on using a crate when not supervised for life. If you are lucky and a nondestroyer, great. But if the idea of using a crate forever isn't an option, either adopt an adult who doesn't need crating when unattended or consider another breed. Socialize, socialize, socialize. Most basenji are not wild about new dogs. But some who are out from puppyhood meeting new dogs all the time can and do like it. But this takes work and commitment on your part. Since I don't believe in dog parks and dog play dates with strange dogs, I never bother. I teach mine to ignore other dogs and figure as long as they learn "leave it" life is good. Dogs really aren't children who need outsiders to be okay... their own pack including humans, a couple of playmates if you don't have another dog, and life is complete. So socialize with your dad's dogs early, don't force things, should be fine if THEY are good with the B. Independent doesn't mean not bonded. That said, my 2nd B came with little socialization and she is well, let's be honest. She likes to be rubbed and fed. But it is a very distant relationship. Not feeding or petting? She has no need to be close. Yes, she wants me to go outside with her but I am at a loss to why since she doesn't come near once out there. But my first and 3rd are velcro. They want to be close, they cuddle, they LOVE and gaze with love. Since the 2nd is the double (half sibling breeding) niece of the first, it wasn't genetics that messed her up, it was a POS breeder who didn't bother to handle or care for her. Enough said. Both the others won't go to bed without me. Sayblee wouldn't even get under the covers. Cara gets under but sticks her head out to watch me. She curls with my child the second she gets on the bed, lays on her. Curls next to me all night, sits close, asks to be picked up and cuddled. I don't think you have to worry about a dog not bonding.

Lola used to eat way too fast & she would be very gassy & throw up often after eating. We got her a bowl similar to the brake fast bowl… don't know the name but same concept & we just picked it up at the local PetSmart. Very inexpensive ($7 maybe)... it has plastic dividers to slow her down. I love it & highly recommend it! It completely stopped the throwing up & combined with a change in diet also cut down on smelly gas.

@mauigirl: I wanted to let you all know what I decided on. It's "Sulou's Tri the Good Life". It took quite the progression to get there. It had to go through "life of riley" to get the "good life" part. It was actually Susan's suggestion and was something I had thought about. And I was able to get "Tri" in there after all. It's kind of appropriate, we're always joking about what a hard life the dogs have, given that they seem to have sleep-a-thons oh, you know, every day!! But I'm pleased with it and couldn't have gotten there without your suggestions so thank you! Very cute name… I really like it

Good luck to you…I really mean that. :) One more thought on this... The most important people in my life are not just "yes men"...they can see when my judgment is clouded by emotion. We might not like what people have to say, but if you step back and look at comments objectively, you'll see that they are meant to help and to give a reality check. The senior members on this forum have HUGE EXPERIENCE...they have great advice, even if it hasn't always been what I've wanted to hear. Please...please...read lvoss' post and then read it again. To me, that is the clearest explanation as to what the danger is by rushing in.
