He is Gorgeous! The third picture looks a little Basenji to me, but I'm not an expert
Is my buddy a basenji?
-
I adopted a dog from the local pound and they advertised him as a german shepherd boxer mix because he was only around 3 months old. I have a picture of him right here. I was reading on Wikipedia about their distaste for water and their curiosity and after examining him and Basenji pictures, I am pretty sure he is. He meets color size and shape, the only difference is his longer uncurved tail.
Can someone give me their opinion?
-
He is very cute… not sure about being a Basenji. His ear shape is a little on the large side. Can't tell from the straight on pic if his facial shape matches. Do you have any more pics to share? Maybe they will give more confirmation.
-
Well, he doesn't look like he has white on his feet, and chest (and tail tip)? That is an important Basenji trait. And a curled tail is important too….doesn't have to be really curly, but it should curl up over the back when awake and alert. His ear shape and size isn't quite right....
Whatever he is, he is VERY cute, and he very well may have some Basenji in him....
-
OMG he's cute…no matter whether he is or isn't...More pictures of this cutie pie would be appreciated!
-
Well he is about 30 pounds and it's his max size. he fits all the characteristics of a basenji and that's the only thing he looks like. i am pretty sure he IS a mix but primarily basenji with his chase-like nature and his curiosity.
here is another picture that might be able to give you a better idea of what he looks like

He is a real cutie! He has the eyes, for sure. I also have 2 mix B's and the behavioral characteristics are what you have to go on and key to proper knowledge and training this type of breed . . . in fact any breed with positive reinforcement. But I enjoy their nature, inquisitivity, alertness - it's all amusement to me and why I love this breed. Welcome and be sure to browse all the training sites and ask away…Have fun with your new boy.

His eyes and bridge of his nose look basenji-like and there is a definate curl to the tail… But those are definately not basenji ears (b's have straight lined ears). From the shape of his jowls (per sencond picture) and his knees and joints, I'd say he might have some Am Staff terrier in him. But as they say, dog grow into their ears and paws... and his are still pretty big proportionately to his size. I'd be surprized if he's maxed out growing yet, even if 6 months old.
What a cutie though! I can see why you couldn't pass him up at the pound!
-
I know he has basenji in him, theres no doubt about that, and hes a little bigger than the males, so he could very well have some Am Staff in him, I have looked at many basenji websites and there are some on there that look JUST LIKE HIM. (that are confirmed basenji).
I don't know, hes a badass pup. Fast, hyper, loves to play, etc…....
Ill put some more images on soon.

Whatever he is HE IS A CUTEY!!!

I agree he has the eyes and the face, but not the ears. Ears aren't the only indicator though, my Hollie is basenji/whippet mix and her ears are more like a whippets, unless she is alerted to something, then her ears stand up. My Hollie has the white legs/feet, face stripe and chest/collar, but her tail is cropped. She too came from a shelter/pound here in TN.
My husband and I have no doubt of her basenji side, her personality is almost ALL basenji. From the self-grooming, dislike of water, the B500, her instinct to hunt and many more off her traits all point to Basenji.
You could always invest in the canine DNA testing… but I don't know who does that in your area. We are in Knoxville... where in TN are you??? Maybe we could get our dogs together to play. Is his name Buddy???
Post more pics when you get a chance.
-
yes his name is buddy, and I am in chattanooga. My sister however, does live in Knoxville near lake loudon. Our dog has already killed some birds and chases squirrels. I am almost 100 percent sure he is at least mostly basenji. I looked at color formations and skeletal structure of basenjis compared to his and he is dead on. I think his ears are a little bigger simply because of what else is in him. He's playful and fits EVERY category that a basenji does including the grooming, etc…..
here are some more images of him. I will continue to post them as I find them
maybe this will give you all a little better idea of what he looks like, im normally too infatuated with him to take pics so lol.

See, that's what sends me away from Basenji. Not that he can't have some in him, but he sure doesn't have the white feet, chest, and tail tip, which are MUSTS. His feet also seem very large to me, where they should be small and he seems to be of somewhat stockier build. His tail looks to be set a little lower on his backside, and doesn't have a curl to it.
The eyes definitely look almond shaped and trimmed nicely with black, which are Basenji features. And are those wrinkles I see.
It's so hard to tell from photos.
WHATEVER he is, he is ADORABLE!!!! And certainly looks to be adored as well!

someone help me find out what he is LOL i cannot find ANYTHING that looks remotely like him.
-
He's gorgeous.. just stick with that. LOL
I'll tell you what he DOESN'T look like to me, and that's a German Shepard/Boxer. LOL Why does every brown dog that goes into a shelter get labeld German Shep. mix?

Well…that IS kind of the deal with lots of mixes! They are one of a kind! Something to keep in mind is that he may be several generations of mixes. After just a few generations of mixing purebred dogs they all tend to blend towards a central "dog" shaped figure, or pariah, or primative dog. Or what dogs looked like before humans started picking and choosing which traits they wanted to alter. If you google PARIAH dog, I think you will find some dogs that look a lot like yours.
I think your guy is going to be quite a bit bigger than a basenji when full grown, judging by some of the photos.

I was using wikipedia and I found a breed that resembles him alot too, just not as much in the face. The Carolina Dog (Dixie Dingo)
Check it out.

I honestly don't see Basenji in this puppy but I do see a very strong resemblence to a Carolina dog, particularly in the following photos from the Carolina Dog Association:
Same head shape, large ears, roundish eye, lack of "stop", general body structure, and most common color in the breed. Put photo 2 next to the photo of Buddy in the above post. Twins?
VERY cute puppy!

Wow. That sure looks like the little guy. Maybe the mystery is solved!!

Yep, I'm definitely with the others on this one… Carolina Dog.
