Does your B do this!!!

  • Last night Sahara licked her privates, and butt for about 10 minutes. I thought she would never stop, she just cleaned and cleaned. Does your B do this, I know they like to clean themselves like a cat, but Sahara really likes to do this. Should I get her checked out?

  • Mickii does that… but sometimes trying to lick the butt could be the anal glands... and other private parts can possibility be signs of an UTI, but not usually... I would just keep and eye on her... most likely nothing....

  • Zahra does this and it normally means her anal glands are full. It smells just awful too when she does it. She did it on the car ride home from vacation and it left a terrible smell and DH thought there was a dead something in the road we were on, I didn't want to tell him what it really was. LOL! I guess I need to take her to the vet to get them expressed. ICK!

  • Sugar clean's quite a bit too. Don't forget B's are the clean dogs. They'll clean anything!

  • If I could lick my private parts I'd do it for way more than 10 minutes.

  • No one needs to know that!!

  • @Duke:

No one needs to know that!!

    Amen…..

  • If your girl is licking her stuff and not her butt, I would suggest helping her clean which will allow you to inspect.

When I would bathe my girl basenji, I would have her all wrapped up and drying off in my lap. I would use a warm wash cloth and wipe around her stuff down there. She always had dirt caked to her area and I always thought it was better to help her clean it than her get an infection.

I never had a problem doing this stuff with my dogs because I consider myself the mom. No one else is going to do it. Mom dogs will lick the puppy butts to encourage going to the bathroom etc.

My girl never fussed about it.

Anal gland expression is cheap and the best money ever spent. Make sure you ask the vet to do it and not a tech or groomer. Ask for the inside expression not the external expression. They are going to charge you either way. Once every 6 months is normal. Cairo started expressing his anal glands right around 5 months. Caesar is a repeat offender and goes every month. I had Cairo's expressed while we were there. The vet said Caesar was olives and Cairo was lima beans.

Once you have cleaned her (no soap, just warm water) and expressed those glands…see if it continues....it could be a UTI, a bug bite from sitting or a scratched anus from scooting if you see that.....

  • Jackers went thru this a few weeks ago, and he gave himself a rash because of it. Now hes on allergy meds and a topical spray for his groin area. It made the rash and inflamed area go away, but i have to watch him now. i let him clean himself to a point, but REALLY, and HOUR Jack!!?? I dont think so…lol

  • They were just wrestling and I was taking pictures and that picture came out. He did not do anything inappropriate, it's humans who interject what’s inappropriate in a dog’s world. They're just being dogs.

  • @Quercus:

No locker room humor, please :) There is a time and a place, but I am pretty sure it isn't here….

I'm all for a laugh or two, but that was over the top. I concur.

no, no…Barkless....go back thru the other posts. The comments weren't about your photo (very cute)...it was about a comment regarding licking one's own private parts...

I am sorry if I gave the impression my 'hand slap' was towards your photo…not at all. No need to remove it!!! I think if you go back thru the thread you will realize I just used what you said to play off of a prior post...sorry about the confusion.

Children are often scary for dogs, they don't move the same as adults, they don't act the same as adults, so dogs don't know how to behave around them. You may want to check out this webinar that is coming up next week through the Family Paws Parent Education, http://jennifershryock.enterthemeeting.com/m/PS15862X

That is usually one of the biggest problems… someone in the house is NOT good about remember to pick up after themselves... or putting things out of reach of the "Basenji"...

@BDawg: Ours will drink wine and beer. Lexi HATES the smell of a banana. When I peel it, sometimes we let her smell it and then runs all over the house. It's so funny and sometimes we chase her with it (good naturedly) and she goes nuts and spins on the bed all playfully. She will roll in anything mint flavored or scented. She also loves to roll in leather and will stick her face in ANY stinky shoe and go bizurk. It's hilarious!! http://www.dogster.com/video/379313/The_new_shoes_leather_is_my_catnip The video is ADORABLE! Just wondering….rolling and/or rubbing on scents is called self-anointing. In wild animal studies they are researching if this is an innate behavior to mask personal scents or to repel external parasites. (Pandas, not only in our United States, but in China breeding facilities, many times choose to anoint with scents that are not found in their natural habitat.) I wonder then, are our dogs also self anointers as a throw back to their wild heritage, or are they just plain strange? Does anyone else have dogs with scent preferences (other than the nasty dead/decayed stuff they find on a regular basis) My Kate is a 'nasty' scent anointer, Tyler will rub on apple scents.

Thanks for the info! Yes we just got over the rain for the most part,,,,,,,thank goodness! What part of Maryland are you from? My aunt lives in Cumberland and the last time we were there we went to Rahobath beach (not sure of the spelling). We had a great time except for the DC traffic – we here in Southeastern Ohio are NOT use to that type of traffic! It was funny once my cousin (from Cumberland) came in town for a visit and we were going down one of our main drags on a Sat. morning and I said "Man,,I cant believe this traffic,,,,,its awful!" and she laughed and said I didnt know what traffic was! Well ,,,,,,,,,she was right,,,,,,,I couldnt imagine dealing with the DC traffic every day. About the furbabies though,,,,,,,they seem to be getting familiar with each other. Only a few minor scuffles today over a rawhide I forgot to get out of the backyard . Also, the marking has seemed to end-- we were a little worried. Lastly, the eating in there crates thing has worked out except our Bella (1st BRAT dog) has been dealing with some seperation issues again after we left her for the weekend to drive to Missouri to get Wrigley. Anyway, hopefully we will be one big happy family! One last thing, kudos to you and your wife for fostering so many dogs. My husband and I are considering volunteering for BRAT after this spring. My son is a senior and I am afraid as we get closer to the spring things will get crazy around here with all of his senior stuff.
