Where/How To Get a Basenji Hunting Bell?

    I’ve seen these online for years when looking at sites that talk about Basenjis, but I’ve only ever seen one for sale. It was featured on eBay. I bid on the Basenji Hunting Bell, but my pain threshold was reached at just over $200. That bell later sold for well over $600!

    I continue to look for them from time to time, but I never see them. I recently looked again and the results were the same. Nuthin’, zero, zilch, nada.

    Are these even available in the United States? Are they available in other countries via the internet? I suppose if I can’t find a real one I just might have to just make my own.

    Not sure that pup is too excited about their bell...

    I have a bell that goes on doodles collar when she is tromping in the woods. It keeps the little critters away, which means that doodle isn't running into the road to chase a squirrel. They cost around a dollar (~$1USD) from most hobby shop. Of course, they aren't cool like this one... I suppose it depends on whether you want function or a unique conversation piece. ;)

    No, no, no. Not one of THOSE. :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes: I have one of those on my front door. I switched it to Jengo after his stroke so that I could hear him if he woke up in the middle of the night. That's not what we're talking about here.

    No, you see this is THE most important accessory that one can ever obtain for a Basenji. It's like having a sticker that says "Made In [insert your country name here]" on your favorite trinket. It's like a baseball glove for ball player. A tennis racket for a tennis player. I have to have one. Somehow not having a Basenji Hunting Bell and being the custodian of a Basenji leaves me feeling... inadequate. :persevering_face:

    I must obtain one. It's moral imperative and I owe it to Basenjis for all of eternity to be able to decorate my Basenji, at least once, with a bell. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

    And just so ya know... this is uncomfortable... I don't want one that big. A much smaller one will be adequate. :thumbs_up:

    Worthwhile to note that the money benefits a Congo Children's School.

    I am mildly surprised that the bells in the photos are around the Basenji's neck.

    I have always read and seen in illustrations of articles I have translated from various books and magazines over the years, that the bells were around the tum !

    Oh gosh, I love this thread. Years ago I researched these bells, because it just seemed that a Basenji parent should have a Basenji hunting bell. But, alas, the prices were SO exorbitant. I could have dealt with $200, maybe even a bit more, but $600 and beyond? Not so much. I would still dearly love to own a bell. I did buy a very "dear" vintage slim book about Basenjis, which I bought in lieu of the bell. I do not recall anything in it about putting the bell around the stomach. But, who knows? Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Basenjis exist in a very wide swath of The Congo, so maybe different peoples/tribes have different customs.
    I would LOVE to have an authentic bell.

    If you look around on the internet you will find a lot of authentic pictures of Basenjis wearing bells in Africa, e.g. this page . It's interesting to see how much we have changed this breed in appearance, since we breed for "pretty", not working ability.

    "In order to get along with a Basenji, you have to be at least half as smart as the dog!"

    Glad you like it. I love this site so much and how much it's members support one another. My thought was to lighten the mood a bit with some fun. 😊

    A little later I'll post a few pics of the only one that I've ever gotten to hold. I still may try and make one myself. The one for $300 is still a bit steep. Maybe not if the site is legitimate. Still investigating that. 👍

    Thank you for the link. The article was very interesting and I enjoyed the photos. I was really intrigued that the “clangers” on the basenji hunting bells were made from monkey bones! Thanks for sharing.

    I saw that site and went through most of it a while back. Great site with really fun history and culture. Not giving up one of my monkey bones to hang round my pups neck. :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

    I’m thinking of using a hardwood or some kind of eucalyptus, which seems traditional. Also thinking of using a few pieces of antler as well. I can’t find any great smallish nuts that the site mentions. But, I did find a really dried out aged to almost black hollowed out coconut on the trail by my house. Pretty big. Also found a nut thing that’s the perfect size. Need to figure out how to hollow it out. Still putting the pieces together in my mind.

    Ditto, on Kembe's comments on the hand-made hunting bell. Too cool!
    Izzy-Bella does appreciate her ever-changing fashionable collars, but I'm not sure how much--or little--she would like a bell around her neck, or anywhere else.

    Here is Naomi, my little African girl. She was one generation removed.
    She had what the breeders here called an African tail. It didn’t have a tight curl at all. She was a beautiful, dainty little girl, under 16 pounds.

    I can see her wearing a bell, but I don’t think she would have liked it at all!

    Naomi is a beauty, to be sure. She is definitely dainty at 16 pounds. Those big old bells would wear her down! Maybe some little Christmas bells???? Ha Ha.

    I think I have enough parts to start Logan' Bell. I've got the goiter (I had to look that term up) sized coconut, the nut thing, which I'll most likely use, some hemp cord that I'm going to braid, then braid again into more braids. I'll slice one of Logan's spent antlers into some strips to use at clangers or whatever they call them. Here's what I have...

    I may also use a soldering iron to burn his name on the front side of the bell using an African font. Something like this maybe...

    My Rosa wrote the "How To Be a Basenji DIVA" manuscript - as many rules there were, it was so worthy of a 'script' at the end! She, and all her offspring, had spring and fall heats, but I only bred her once in the spring. That produced one puppy, my Captain. She always ruled over her pups, except when Captain came along - she did what HE said when he was about 2 weeks old!

    @emmett Hope you're still reading our responses. I'm impressed that you're doing research and reaching out to people who have the breed of dog you're interested in. In my opinion you're doing exactly the right thing. I also like that you're considering a Basenji. I really hope you'll keep that seed of interest in the back of your mind, and that when the time is right that you'll revisit having a Basenji. As other have pointed out, and you've concluded... a Basenji may not be the best choice for where you are right now. Another thought might be to find a local dog park, go there, observe the dogs, the way that they interact with their owners and see if particular breed looks interesting. Some are laid back, some are high energy, some crave attention, some want independence, etc. Watch them. Get use to spotting the behaviors that you want in a dog. Then, when it comes time for you to choose your dog for life, you'll be better prepared to spot the personality, or temperament as we call it, that best fits where you are in life. In turn you'll be making the best choice for your new pal as well. We have great members here with decades of experience breeding, training, showing and co-existing with dogs. I hope you'll stop by anytime you have any questions at all. They don't have to be about Basenjis. Good luck and let us know if you get a pup!! :oncoming_fist: :slightly_smiling_face: :thumbs_up:

    on the heat of the sun???? Basenji love the heat. If you had a fireplace, it will be within inches of the hot logs.

We've lost that. As for dogs, yep... we're similar aged and I remember my grandmother's farm and the fairly steady stream of new farm dogs because they got killed by wild life/snakes etc or roving dogs. It was business as usual. Dog disappeared or dead-- get another one. I know many still feel that way. Rather have to dogs run free and happy and dead young than "cooped up." Our value for dogs as companions has dramatically changed, and our view of our responsibility for them. We always had cats and dogs who were allowed out, and like you, most stayed on the property. But I remember 3 dogs who didn't (one small, probably stolen) and cats didn't live long. We just took that as the norm. Obviously I have look back at that and am horrified. (Though there was an Irish setter who would NOT stay on his property and if the owners weren't there, he followed me about a mile to my house when I walked home from school. His owners laughed, would come get him when they got home if he didn't go back. I thought that was kewl back then but not so much then.) But my experience, and I lived in a very small town then, and a smallish one now, is very different. Then and now, dead dogs and cats on the road are incredibly common. The litmus test is research statistics. Cats who are even allowed out a few hours a day loose have dramatically decreased life spans. I haven't bothered to look about dogs, though a look at shelters should be enough to prove that dogs loose are often dogs lost. The number with electric fence collars demonstrates how ineffective even that is if prey drive kicks in. (for the record, your dog your choice. Loose cats however have an almost unimaginable impact on wildlife, so it IS my business if your cat runs loose.) Yep, times have definitely changed.

    I have a general question. Does anybody elses Basenji not like to be picked up. Ours sometimes loves it, and sometimes not. Also sometimes she runs up to dogs as quiet as can be and plays, and than other times she makes a squeeling noise, and people are afraid she is picking a fight with their dog. But I think shes just talking. She squeels at our new Whippet puppy, and loves to play with her and is as gentle as can be, considering the Whippet puppy is really rough on my poor Basenji baby girl. does anyone know what the squeeling means. The baroo I get she does that all the time. The squeeling is confusing.

    Well, it started when I was out with my 22yr. old son at the mall. He said, "Hey, Mom lets look at the dogs in the petstore ", I replied, "I don't have time besides your Dad has too many ideas what a dog has to be like for us to get one", I'll never find a dog like he wants". That was 3 yrs. ago this Jan., and I had never heard of a Basenji. I called DH about 3 times the night I found Sahara to persuade him we needed this dog, but she was very expensive so it took some work talking him into me buying her. She is owned by my son, me and my husband, she lives with my husband and I. She is the best dog I have ever owned, and I have had many through my lifetime. I would never get another dog from a pet store (didn't know about puppy mills)but I would have not known of this breed if I hadn't stopped and looked that night. My husband loves this dog so very much, he buys her whatever she wants or needs. I love her also, she is my joy and I can't stand to be from her for very long, we just got back from a trip and it was so hard missing her. My son said that she didn't eat very good while we were gone and was very destructive in the house. Guess she missed us as well!
