    My basenji is dealing with a similar issue as the Basenji in this topic from years past. He’s been sneezing a lot for over 3 weeks- had bloody noses for about a week, just one nostril. He did a round of antibiotics and 20 days of allergy medication (temril p) which helped a lot. As soon as I took him off the medication, he’s was back to sneezing, this time with clear discharge. I would like to avoid doing a scope, as I can’t help but think it’s an allergy (since the antihistamine is working). We live in the Pacific Northwest, it’s a wet time of year with leaves on the ground...mold allergy? Anyone out there have a similar experiance?

    @jane-el Seems like you are doing everything possible. Allergies are common in all Animals and since the Antihistamine is working I would suggest getting him tested for Mold. Mold is dangerous as it settles in the lungs. Mold remediation in Homes costs a fortune because there are so many different strains and you on the West Coast most likely have different strains of the stuff then I have on the East Coast.

    The Vet can swab his nose and put that under a Microscope, he/she will most likely send it to a Laboratory for confirmation of the type of Mold you have. My Mom's 2 Senior Rescue Dogs are allergic to ragweed and other things that come in late Spring and early summer. They get Hot Spots but she has a tonic that she puts on their skin that lubricates it but discourages them from licking themselves raw.

    I hope you get it sorted out and know you are being a great Steward for your Dog!

    Do you think it could be some type of burrlike plant that is remaining in the nostril or sinus tract?

    Sounds like allergies, but Chris could be right. Foxtail is a common problem and could cause similar symptoms. Unfortunately, scoping is necessary.

    @antigone What is the tonic that your Mom uses on hot spots?

    My Mom uses Baby Oil with Peppermint Essential Oil and mixes those 2 things together and adds H20 so she can spray it on. Those Hot Spots are awful but my Mom's Tonic does the trick. The diluted oils are not dangerous and Peppermint Oil is what keeps them from licking themselves raw. Good luck!

    Please be careful using even diluted essential oils. Dogs absorb it through the skin, inhale it when smelling it. Talk to your vet.

    ::::::Peppermint is considered toxic to dogs by the ASPCA. In small doses, however, it is generally safe. That does not necessarily make it good for dogs.     @debradownsouth The ASPCA is a horrible organization for all animals. Every time legislation is introduced to Ban Horse Slaughter they get in touch with the Reps and Senators and kill the bill. They started by protecting Carriage Horses in New York City but those Carriage Horses are still there suffering. With Dogs they commit fraud with their TV Commercials. They say they are a no kill shelter but they outsource the killing.

    I did my own investigation into them at the Headquarters on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. I went every day after work for 2 weeks and said I was interested in a small dog. I told them which dog I was interested in but the day after that the dog was gone. It had not been adopted because they said the little Dog was vicious! It was not. they give the Dogs and Cats 7 Days and then they transfer them to a facility that has one purpose: to Euthanize Dogs and Cats.

    The oils are so diluted that there is no danger of them being made ill. My Mom is a Nurse and we had one Cat who lived to be 25 years old. She knows what she is doing. ASPCA is not a good source because they lie and defraud their donors.

    For anyone experiencing similar symptoms, gonna post a recap from today's visit. Vet said that it's very likely to be an allergy, since his symptoms didn't really worsen, other than 2 or 3 breathing difficulty attacks (probably due to extra exposure to the allergen). Chances to be a foreign body stuck in his nasal passage or ear are very slim, because he would've already gotten at least some yellowish/greenish, pus like, nasal discharge and a lot more pawing and overall discomfort. Same goes for kennel cough, but since it has a longer incubation period, he said to keep under supervision for 2-4 more days (should at least get some specific coughing, fever or something related to infections). He said that a blood test would pretty much say nothing in this case, and a lung X-ray is also not needed since he didn't hear anything weird with the stethoscope. He just recommended to stay away as much as possible from grass for now and keep an eye on him. Prescribed Aeurius in case of other breathing attacks. All in all, my boy seems to be getting better. Not much sneazing, other than a few times when taken outside. Nose doesn't seem to be as runy either. And he seems to be getting his energy back, as he wanted to play today. As much as I dislike his zoomies sometimes, I 100% prefer that than not feeling well and laying down, heh.

After completing APOQUEL field studies, 239 dogs enrolled in an unmasked (no placebo control), continuation therapy study receiving APOQUEL for an unrestricted period of time. Mean time on this study was 372 days (range 1 to 610 days). Of these 239 dogs, one dog developed demodicosis following 273 days of APOQUEL administration. One dog developed dermal pigmented viral plaques following 266 days of APOQUEL administration. One dog developed a moderately severe bronchopneumonia after 272 days of APOQUEL administration; this infection resolved with antimicrobial treatment and temporary discontinuation of APOQUEL. One dog was euthanized after developing abdominal ascites and pleural effusion of unknown etiology after 450 days of APOQUEL administration. Six dogs were euthanized because of suspected malignant neoplasms: including thoracic metastatic, abdominal metastatic, splenic, frontal sinus, and intracranial neoplasms, and transitional cell carcinoma after 17, 120, 175, 49, 141, and 286 days of APOQUEL administration, respectively. Two dogs each developed a Grade II mast cell tumor after 52 and 91 days of APOQUEL administration, respectively. One dog developed low grade B-cell lymphoma after 392 days of APOQUEL administration. Two dogs each developed an apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (one dermal, one anal sac) after approximately 210 and 320 days of APOQUEL administration, respectively. One dog developed a low grade oral spindle cell sarcoma after 320 days of APOQUEL administration.     We decided to take Booger to the vet this evening. The doctor seems to think its just allergies to something in his environment. He recommended antihystamines & possibly antibiotics. He said if those don't improve it, we might want to have a culture taken from his nose. So we got some Benadryl, and hopefully his condition will improve over the next day or two.

    @Andrew: Booger has been sneezing a lot recently. It started around the same time we got our new dryer, and at first we thought he might be allergic to the fabric softener we're using. However, I'm not so sure now. He sneezes in small fits throughout the day & night & at seemingly random times (in the middle of the night, at the dog park, in the car, watching tv, whatever). Right now the weather is kind of up & down temperature wise & leaves are falling, etc. Could it just be seasonal allergies? It doesn't seem to bother him a lot, and he doesn't have any other symptoms, so I see no need to take him to the doctor. But if there's something I could give him to relieve the sneezing without making him groggy or without needlessly medicating him, I would like to try it. Any experience will fall time allergies? it's funny you mention that. We have noticed it with all of ours. Maybe it is allergies.

    @Vanessa: I was allergic to our basenji when he first came home. I would break out in a rash when he touched me. My eyes would water and become really itchy. Just wash your B and wipe him down a few days a week until you adjust. Also consider some allergy meds…Zyrtec works great and now you don't need a perscription. Agree, Zyrtec is a great drug for allergies, but can make some people very sleepy. There is a new prescription allergy treatment available called Xyzal that has shown equal symptom relief to Zyrtec in clinical trials, but has less sedation. However, I will warn you that it is very expensive!

    Both my sons have allergies diagnosed by a professional allergist and do fine with Basenjis. We have just got our 3rd B two weeks ago and no sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes. I think for you that it MUST be something the dog is bringing in or perhaps your dog is one that performs one particular way and my family lucked out with 3 of the other way. Maybe someday they will have a test like the Fanconi that shows the DNA of this family tree has more dander and the DNA of that heritage has less dander to near none. I do agree with the smart person that has posted on this site the best idea I have ever heard: rub a t-shirt all over the possible family addition, sleep with the t-shirt, and THEN decide. I know it is too late for you but a good thing to repost for readers. Good luck with your situation.
