    My 11 week old basenji boy has no problem holding his pee when he is in his crate and play pen. When he is in the house he seems to not think that is is his "house" as well and will pee on any carpeted or textured surface. Is there a point when basenji realize that potty inside the house is a no go?

    He's not having accidents, he just hasn't got the idea of housetraining yet, you can't be letting him run around without watching him like a hawk. If you can't, he's gotta be in his crate. Take him out regularly, make a big fuss, treats, when he pees/poos where you want him to. If he does nothing, he has to go back in the crate if you can't watch him. Be consistent, he'll learn.

    Hang in there! We have had our 10 week old for 5 days, he now understands we aren't excited when he pees in the house. But when he goes outside or on the pad he gets great treats! It takes some time, but it will happen! They are very intelligent! We also have LOTS of carpet treatment ready at all times :)

    Simple instructions to creating a dog you can live happily with. Look on the right to links, including housebreaking. House training is a boring job, but if you do it right, in a few months you have it done. If you mess up, you'll still be battling this a year from now. Doing it right means your eyes are on the puppy every single second he's not in a crate or outside... or you have a leash on him. Good luck... you'll make it. :)

    With the exception of my perfect Elliot, all of my basenjis have been hard to house train. You think they have it and then you find poo on the couch x__x.

    Let them out frequently and consistently and they will get it. If he plays hard take him out right away! Morgan would play with Elliot, stop to pee on the carpet and then go right back to playing. Little twerp! Also important to remember that outside potty time is for potty only. Puppies will go out to play, forget to go because they are having fun and then come in and go.

    I have a screened in patio and while they were young, we bought the pee pads with the fake grass. They did fairly well with that in the puppy area, but then the carpet, seemed to remind them of the fake grass and we had issue with that, so I went on Amazon and bought a really nice piece of fake grass with rubber bottom, specifically for pets, I put the pee pads underneath it , to give it a bit of a hill and I leave my sliding door open, so they can go when they want. The use it all day long and its wonderful, but it took some time.

    If you think the pup needs to go out, your too late... LOL! As noted it takes time and lots/lots patience..... you have to be aware 24/7.... They will finally get it.... note however, especially with bitch puppies, when they start teething... many will for whatever reason totally forget potty training.....

    Be careful on over using treats... mix it up with joyous praise and a rub under the chin and pat the back. If you do treats only they can think if they stop getting treats they might think it's bad behavior and change the potty behavior, but by mixing it up they still get the praise and reward with a good job, also always use their name with praise, and never with discipline. I'm reading this book about raising and training basenji's and it's also what my folks said they did that worked with their basenji

    My Dog used a Litter Box until 12 Weeks of Age. After that, I took her to the Horse Farm and let her 'Pack' with older well-trained Dogs. She mimicked their behaviors and she learned how to Sit, Stay, Come when called and lay down. The Dogs did a great job of training mine. I did not have very many problems. these dogs get a bad reputation for being hard to train but they really aren't. They are very stubborn and would rather die than negotiate. Therein lies the importance of understanding the Dog's body language, that tells you all you need to know. They are extremely intelligent and never forget a thing, including people and other animals.     Stop with the free feeding... this is a dog that needs to be on a schedule. And a cup and a half might be too much for a 20lb dog. Try reducing it to a cup. I have also found that feeding 2x's a dog is better than once a day. I have never let my dogs free feed. Once he is on a schedule you can mostly determine when he should have to go... and then you take him out and stay out till he goes. A trick you can use (many don't like this but I will put it out there) is what people that show use. Insert a match in his bum half way.... This will stimulate him to go, when he does praise/treat him. And until he gets the idea, you will need to keep him crated or on leash. You can search the forum for other conversations about using a match to stimulate. Search for match trick

    Try feeding her bran cereal (with NO artificial sweeteners listed in the ingredients!) softened in plenty of water an hour B4 a walk. This has helped me correct crate/indoor pooping issues with several puppy mill fosters by increasing the urge to eliminate; They poop outdoors, giving me a behaviour to reinforce. She might be a shy pooper, too–if you can, find her a screen of tall grass or brush for privacy, don't interupt her with praise or be loud offering it, and never yell or strike her for pooping indoors...many dogs won't potty within sight of their owners for fear of being reprimanded.

    I have always feed morning and evening… if by chance you are free feeding that will add to your problem of trying to get her on a schedule.

    Fluffypony, Consider the kennels the best investment that you will make. We did not agree with crate training in the beginning when we got our Puggle, I felt that it was cruel to lock him up all day. We bought an excerise pen, put the pee pads in there and everyday we came home to shredded pee pads and a huge mess. Finally we decided to get the kennel because we could not take the mess anymore not to mention that we would have to bathe the Chase everynight after we cleaned up the mess. In time, we were able to trust Chase to be left with the kennel door open and he could be free in the kitchen because we had gates up. This took about 6 months. He hardly ever had an accidentonce he learned and got older. Then, we got Zahra, our Basenji, now they are both locked in their kennels all day, I don't trust Zahra to not destroy our house. She still has not fully learned that she can not potty in the house. She is getting better but if I give her too much room in her crate she will potty on one end and hang out in the other. I thought Chase was hard to train, Zahra is much worse. Maybe it is the fact that we got her from a pet store and she was there for so long and it was acceptable for her to potty in her cage and sleep in it. Yuck. Sometimes we let them share a kennel because when we first got Zahra she did not like to be apart from Chase, I think it made her feel safe to be with him in his kennel all day. Anyway, as a person who originally did not like the kennel idea this was my first dog, I thought it was mean now I know that they actually enjoy the security of it. They are pack animals.
