Are Basenji's okay with Hamsters?

Basenji Talk
  • We have an adorable Basenji mix. Our son wants a hamster. We aren't sure this is a good idea to get a hamster or not. Has anyone had this experience and can offer any advise?

  • I would say, be careful. I walk by two rabbits in a cage outside a neighbour's house every day, and our lovely sisters lunge and scream every time.

  • I think you are just asking for trouble... however if you do, be sure that the room where the Hamster is kept has a door and is kept shut tight.

  • A Basenji would love a hampster! Oh, you didn't mean for lunch?? Seriously, good advice from tanza. Care will be needed. My first Basenji (after she had moved on to a new home) dispatched the neighbour's Easter Bunny. Talk about trauma for the kids.....

  • We don't keep anything that low on the food chain anymore.

  • Short answer- NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basenjis are hunters and most will do anything in their power to get to the critters in their environment. Mine spend most of their outdoor time looking for chipmunks that live under the shed. If you decided to get the hamster it will have to be kept in a room where the basenji can't go. I have and do keep basenjis and small animals in the same house but they aren't allowed near them. I don't think they even know I have the geckos and snake!

Some dogs are fine with small critters but I personally would not let them near each other. It's not worth the risk in my opinion. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye!

Also, rats make much better pets for kids than hamsters. ;)

Hi Vickayx, First let me say Dolce looks adorable. Her white face only makes her look distinguishd. As far as I can determine the only thing mentioned in Basenji Standards is that white should not predominate for her overall appearance and from what you have written you really dont seem to be planning on showing anyway. Years ago I bred Rodesians to show but as I got older I decided that what I wanted most was a little snuggle bug and went to rescue B's. spacicfically those who had had a hard life before me. We now have 2 four legged children who are always rooing to show how happy they are. Enjoy your new baby and remember to try and not let her know she is smarted.

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

Jess - why don't you put a proposal to each of the individual clubs that they take a Discover Dogs stand. There are new people in the breed now who may be more interested. Also I do know that some of the breeds at DD this year had asked for double stands precisely to give space so that dogs could be rested without being crowded in. It wasn't a case of tired dogs biting but as you know Basenjis object to having strangers pushing into their faces. There are plenty of other breeds who would also object to this. After all I'm sure that nobody would put a dog of bad temperament on the stand. That wouldn't do the breed any good!! I remember one Crufts when one of the basenjis went for the judge and headlines were 'Biting Basenji'!! You can imagine the uproar and the disservice it did to the breed! I'm not sure who would ascertain that the information would be accurate though. I do know that some of the info on the club websites is incorrect!!!

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat
