Vet check up today

Basenji Talk

  • Yay. Another good day at the vet. Keoki went in for his last puppy shots, and again wowed every body in the waiting room and office.

Some people knew what breed he was, others did not. Everyone seemed to agree he was adorable. He got lots of comments and compliments inside the building and outside in the yard.

One woman said he was just beautiful and asked if he was a Basenji. She said she'd never seen one before except in photos and was never impressed with the photos, but up close in real life they are beautiful. :D Yeah, I know.

Vet was pleased with his weight, said he has a gorgeous coat and again loved the personality.
Ahh, it's always nice when people love your babies!!

  • Great… how much did he weigh?... our little Kobey on his last visit was 17lbs... and yes that is a tad fat.. however I am a big, big believer of keep a puppy a little to the fat side... you never know if they will get sick and that little extra might be the difference between life and death.. I learned that with my OJ... he got sick as a 5 month old and had he not had a little extra as a puppy, we would have lost him for sure....

  • 13 lbs today. He's about 14 - 14.5 inches at the shoulder – I think. It's hard to measure a puppy when he is trying to eat the measuring tape. LOL
He's 16 weeks, and all leg, I swear.

    How old is Kobey?

  • Zeke weighed in at 18.6 pounds at 19 weeks old. I am not sure how much Sophie weighs right now.

  • Zuri is 4 months old today and weighs 10lbs. I couldn't find the measuring tape to see how tall she is but she looks amazing.

  • WTG Keoki!!!

  • Aw…doesn't it make you proud? I love introducing the breed to people, especially when Nala is so sweet! Way to go, Keoki!

  • My basenjis are very well known at my vet's office. Since we are in so much when we have a litter everyone in the office knows my dogs. When I call, I just give my dog's name and they know who they are talking to. I always know when there is a new vet tech when they dogn't know my dogs when I call. Everyone there loves my dogs. When we first started there we were the "good basenjis" now I think we must have set the standard for basenjis since we are now "the basenjis".

I don't think paying that amount is unreasonable to talk to a vet. The vet practice I go to is one of the best in my town and all three vets are usually booked full a couple weeks in advance (though they will always make time for emergencies). If I were to go just to speak to the vet I would expect to be charged something for taking time that she would otherwise be using to treat animals. That being said I would check out both vets. It doesn't hurt to shop around.

Took my car to the dealer today for an inspection. They put it on a lift and checked all the undercarriage and tires and found NO DAMAGE! Yea! Sure made me happy. Who knew a Prius could run over 2 big aluminum ladders at over 50 mph without any damage? Good thing Don was driving and not me, I probably would have swerved and turned us over, and hit other cars for sure. Whew, a lucky day for us.

I shall do ! Currently she is still lactating, still moody, still my favourite puppy in the world :) Her appetite has been slightly more irregular, but she is still eating and drinking to my comfort. Not much to report thus far, we have one more week before the vet wants us back.

@Nemo: how weird. Nemo tried to eat off his martingale collar today. He only wears it when his leash is on. Luckily it is still usable. Glad to hear Roo is well. Thanks Nemo, We strongly suspect that the Vet or Vet Tech loosened his collar when they took it off before his Neuter. When the Vet Tech put his collar back on him, they neglected to check it for proper fit and we never thought about the possiblity that hit had been loosed, so we did not bother checking the fit. We bought Roo a new Red Martingale Collar the other day and I made sure it properly adjusted. I can just get about 2 fingers inside it. It does not hang down where the leash connects so we do not see anyway he can get any part of the collar in his mouth or lower Jaw. We have been watching him the last few days and we now believe it is a non-issue. What we did learn is that when we do take him to the Vet, we need to make sure his collar is properly adjusted when we pick him up. I am sure we would be much safer taking his collar off when we are home, but from what I see if the Martingale Collar is adjusted properly it's no longer a problem or concern. So we will chalk this experience up to owner error. Most likely it was mine for overlooking and not checking the collar after we picked Roo up from the Vet. Jason

I have to agree with that agilebasenji, prong collars are not for Basenji's that I have ever seen, however, food seems to motivate them much better!
