Vet check up today

Basenji Talk

  • Yay. Another good day at the vet. Keoki went in for his last puppy shots, and again wowed every body in the waiting room and office.

Some people knew what breed he was, others did not. Everyone seemed to agree he was adorable. He got lots of comments and compliments inside the building and outside in the yard.

One woman said he was just beautiful and asked if he was a Basenji. She said she'd never seen one before except in photos and was never impressed with the photos, but up close in real life they are beautiful. :D Yeah, I know.

Vet was pleased with his weight, said he has a gorgeous coat and again loved the personality.
Ahh, it's always nice when people love your babies!!

  • Great… how much did he weigh?... our little Kobey on his last visit was 17lbs... and yes that is a tad fat.. however I am a big, big believer of keep a puppy a little to the fat side... you never know if they will get sick and that little extra might be the difference between life and death.. I learned that with my OJ... he got sick as a 5 month old and had he not had a little extra as a puppy, we would have lost him for sure....

  • 13 lbs today. He's about 14 - 14.5 inches at the shoulder – I think. It's hard to measure a puppy when he is trying to eat the measuring tape. LOL
He's 16 weeks, and all leg, I swear.

    How old is Kobey?

  • Zeke weighed in at 18.6 pounds at 19 weeks old. I am not sure how much Sophie weighs right now.

  • Zuri is 4 months old today and weighs 10lbs. I couldn't find the measuring tape to see how tall she is but she looks amazing.

  • WTG Keoki!!!

  • Aw…doesn't it make you proud? I love introducing the breed to people, especially when Nala is so sweet! Way to go, Keoki!

  • My basenjis are very well known at my vet's office. Since we are in so much when we have a litter everyone in the office knows my dogs. When I call, I just give my dog's name and they know who they are talking to. I always know when there is a new vet tech when they dogn't know my dogs when I call. Everyone there loves my dogs. When we first started there we were the "good basenjis" now I think we must have set the standard for basenjis since we are now "the basenjis".

Bring your paperwork that the breeder gave you to your first visit because they will want to know some things like birth date, always (in the first year or so when lots of shots are administered) bring the vaccination record book Pam and Sheila gave you and ensure they make a copy of it and not just write it down..you will also want to update your copy as your pup receive shots so like I said..bring it so they can fill it in for you. Any questions you have regarding vaccinations I highly suggest asking your vet but also getting in touch with Pam to ask her opinion, she knows her dogs and her lines and she is better equipped than the vet to give you an honest evaluation on which to give. Also try to follow her guidance on neutering and spaying (if you plan to). I know with Oakley I followed their advice. It might be true or not but in my opinion basenjis tend to mature slower and I find they need more time for the growth plates to close before castrating is a wise choice.
  • Is this normal for a vet?

I don't think paying that amount is unreasonable to talk to a vet. The vet practice I go to is one of the best in my town and all three vets are usually booked full a couple weeks in advance (though they will always make time for emergencies). If I were to go just to speak to the vet I would expect to be charged something for taking time that she would otherwise be using to treat animals. That being said I would check out both vets. It doesn't hurt to shop around.

I think it was Mirtillo that there was a video of playing with coke bottles…Jack got one down off the counter the other day and I started to let him keep it.....but then I thought better. I don't want him to think that if he gets something off of the counter I will let him keep it. Plus, there are lots of bottles I would rather he not get into (Finlandia, Jack Daniels, Jameson's). I think I will start letting him play with those (empty plastic bottles). They are the cheapest toy ever! Duke- I'm really embarrassed that I got you and Phoenix mixed up- really sorry....things are going well, though, hanks for asking. Jack hasn't been able to come down lately because we have been sanding and painting, and we didn't want for him to a) breathe in nasty fumes and sawdust and things that are bad or b) get a lovely little noseprint in the middle of a freshly painted wall! LOL! Moving day is May 24th. Jack is going to stay at a friend's house, to avoid the trauma of him having to see us move all of his things out of the apartment.

I have to agree with that agilebasenji, prong collars are not for Basenji's that I have ever seen, however, food seems to motivate them much better!
