I saw another basenji!

Basenji Talk
  • We met a couple who have a little tri girl named Bella at PetSmart. I'm going to call them and schedule a play date!!! It was the coolest thing! We didn't have Corky with us. I spotted them and said to my husband "OMG, LOOK!!!" and proceeded to fawn over her. We got to talking and they were just as excited as we were!!!

I took Corky to PetSmart Sunday and one lady started to say "That's a Doberman mixed with…" I stopped her and said "Nope, he's a basenji." She never heard of the breed. I told her a few things about basenjis. It just so happened to be adoption day and her son said "I want that one Mom." hehe I felt a little bad when I told him he was not up for adoption he was MINE. Then a few other people thought he was a rat terrier mix. I love it that Corky is such a conversation starter and that I get to brag about basenjis. :D

  • Those of you in cities with large basenji populations are lucky. There ARE a few here in Knoxville. Hollie and I have met 4 others at various parks and events, but only one owner really wanted to talk about the breed and have playdates. I know there are others here, other people/vets tell me, but I have only seen the four. Would love to have a large enough group to do basenji playdates and other things.

  • LOL, how about the moment when you see another basenji that looks just like your basenji!!

When I adopted Caesar he was the cutest red boy in the world!! Then at petsmart I saw another red basenji as beautiful as Caesar! That is when I realized they all are cute!!

At the dog park when the pack is 11 strong, it is hard to tell them apart at times!!

  • Well for those who have never seen one. I myself was unfamiliar but I can definately see how someone might of a rat terrier when trying to figure out what our dogs are.

  • Shuddering at the top pic…..looks like a very, very wrong basenji ;)

Actually there are lines of Rat Terriers (particularly Decker Rat Terriers) that have Basenji in their make up. So specifically, I would imagine that tri colored one is a Decker.

Ohhhh, how funny-exactly what I thought!

  • striking resemeblence…I'll admit but tail & the faces are dead give aways..NOT basenji lol :D

  • FINALLY!!!! I took Kona to the dog park tonight and he met his first basenji!!!! They played awesome together and Taz's owner was very nice also!!!

This is a picture of a lot of what went on….along with A LOT of running :D

p.s. Kona is doing the dominance showing haha

  • We've met two at the dog park. Neither stayed very long due to not getting along well with others.
My favorite quote was from a little girl, maybe 7 years old, who asked "can I walk your horse - dog? I meant dog." I told her I thought she was a horse-dog too.

  • How cute. The other day a lady told me that my two looked like deers.

  • I love watching Jazzy and Keoki when they run through my garden – which they are NOT supposed to do, but hey! the fence is down -- they leap over the chives and look JUST like deer jumping. Keoki is not as graceful yet, but he's getting there.

  • Every dog in my neighborhood is a pitbull. everyone always thinks minpin, or GSD (he has the coloring like a german shepard). i got him at North Shore in LI. they thought he was a shep/chow mix.

  • I got my Lillie from North Shore Animal League also. When did you get Goober? I got Lillie on Jan. 22, 2007. She is my second dog from North Shore. The first one I adopted in Jan. 1994 was a puppy (lab/border collie mix). Lucy passed away in Oct. 2005. She was the sweetest dog.

    Jodie:)

  • I'm sorry to hear about Lucy. I had to bury my english shepard Missy around the same time. We got Goober on April 25, 2007

Love the picture of Achilles - that "one paw in the air" stance is really nice - my girl, Shaye, stands like that when she is considering whether she can get to a squirrel or some other thing before the leash runs out…....

Filas are classified as Dangerous Dogs in the UK. Obviously a case of nurture not nature.

Lovely photos! your b's are gorgeous! Re: food….. after working in a dog grooming business, i must say i am amazed at the amount of people that come in with their overweight fluffies (i call them fluffies as its usually the maltese X's and shihtzus etc) that have no idea that... human food shouldnt be their diet! or what they feeding them is wrong and i dont know how many times we've tried explaining to either cut back or go on the proper food and they dont understand?! i dont understand how people can have such a hard time understanding food/nutrition for their dogs. I understand there are many different way etc which is all fine, but as long as its in the right moderation and its nothing ridiculas (such as a vegatarian diet.....deadly serious.... its like c'mon luv, they are carnivores...) anyways thats my rant :D

Hello I am the basenji owner you saw on Wolfe rd. in Sunnyvale!!! I saw this post recently and am glad you spotted us. My boy is around 12 years old now. My boyfriend and I live in SoCal but we go up to your area several times a year to visit family. I hope you still have a basenji(s?) it would be really nice to get them together. We have been part of the Hollywood basenji group down here for a long time. Hope to hear from you soon. Veronica
