Zeus: Basenji mix? (Please give me your insight!)

    This is my baby Zeus. I love him regardless of what kind of dog he is so this is mainly just for fun to end the questions! Everyone always wants to know his breed and so do I sometimes. I found Zeus at a dog park that is right beside a pet shelter. The shelter was closed that day so the "abandoner" left him with a family at the pet park. Luckily I showed up moments later to find him! The guy who left him claimed he had blue heeler in him but as you can see he has another breed that dominates most of his physical traits and size. I recently went on vacation with him and everyone kept asking if he was a Basenji. I googled a Basenji/blue heeler mix and voila! It looks just like him. I wanted to get feedback from some people who would know for sure though so here I am.

    He weighs about 23 lbs and right now he is about 8 months. These pictures are all from within the last few months. Typically his tail curls more, and especially when he was younger. It is long and bushy though so I believe that is definitely more of the blue heeler. I could not get him to stand still long enough to get his natural stance.

    Perhaps a Shepherd or a Spitz mix since he has a curly tail. One of the shelters near me has a dog park next to it and people will sometimes abandon their animals overnight in the dog park instead of waiting for the shelter to open. People amaze me!

    I still think the Podengo Grande short hair looks like the proverbial Basenji mix….http://www.dogsindepth.com/hound_dog_breeds/portuguese_podengo.html (copy and paste- it is too involved to get a pix on the forum from a download) what say you???

    Podengos are extremely rare in the USA so finding a mix of one would not be very likely.

    ok, so my shade of grey is just probably unlikely, but not totally out of the question. I just added the link so that you can see the similarity…..So it is an American mix, maybe or maybe not Basenji- who cares, it is a dog in need, got adopted by a great heart and is a cutie!     I can see why someone would think there was Terrier, but I'm not so sure about Basenji. (The only way to know for sure is to do a DNA test.) Both of your dogs look very similar. What breed, or mix, is the older one?

    OMG soooo cute. Her colouring and face don't look like a basenji, but maybe she's mixed with something with stronger genes. Do a DNA test. That would be fun!

    @JulYEAH: Yeah, he does bark, but he also makes alot weird bizarro noises and is really vocal (not always barking). We have a rescue(r) dog who appeared on our side porch at 2:30 a.m. at about 3 months old. The vet has agreed she is probably a Basenji mix; however, she pointed out that DNA tests are notoriously expensive and inaccurate. Your dog certainly seems to carry the characteristics. Many people have approached us to ask if she is a Basenji. One of them is a man who works in Africa, where they are common. He first pointed out her curved tail. The body style, with the tiny waist, also seems to fit. And the SPEED is astounding. She is compelled to run, and has a nose that won't quit. She also makes weird noises: the classic "yodeling." Purebred Basenjis are said not to bark; however, I believe as a mix she got the best of both worlds. She follows every personality characteristic I have discovered about Basenjis: *Curved Tail *Narrow Waist *The ability to "yodel" *Social, But NOT Strictly a One-Owner dog - She loves everyone and will take a trip around the world before coming home if she escapes and has friends all over the neighborhood); *"Built-In Entrenching Tools" - She digs holes everywhere; *Excruciatingly Intelligent - She will sometimes contemplate whether a command is in her best interest before performing it. *Crazy-Brilliant "Hunting" Nose - She can sniff a squirrel, cat, or other intruder from three doors down and cannot rest until she has chased it away. The other part(s) of her heritage have remained a mystery. There is apparently a larger breed in the mix, as she is about 10 pounds heavier than a Basenji, with a wider facial structure. This morning I saw a picture of a Visla and had an "aha!" moment. We may both have the honor of owning Basenji-Visla mixes!
