Two new issues with Tayda. 1\. Growling @ my husband. 2\. Peeing inappropriately

Behavioral Issues
  • Sounds like the jury is reaching a verdict. :) I put a bench with a high cushion in front of the window, too, and have learned to open the shutters all the way! I did not do this at first and I came home to scratches on the window sill and teeth marks on the plantation shutters where "someone" had stood on their hind legs to try and open them. Of course, he soon learned that a quick flick of his nose would do the trick, but no need– I'm a quick study and now leave them wide open.

This hasn't stopped the peeing from separation anxiety, but it has helped the vocal and frantic discontent at not being able to see out.

  • wow, I have to say this is pretty amusing. I'll give the window perch a try and see how it works. She did have access to the couch in the living room, but it was far away from the window and no heating vent. Perhaps that just wasn't good enough. ha ha.

  • @ownedbyspencer:

and have learned to open the shutters all the way! I did not do this at first and I came home to scratches on the window sill and teeth marks on the plantation shutters where "someone" had stood on their hind legs to try and open them.

My venetian blinds suffered the same way when I tried to close them against the heat in the summer. No way I was taking away the "view". I have learned to live with the porch being hotter than it needs to be, as long as "he who must be obeyed" is happy. ;)

When you think of it, from a Basenji point of view it must be tough to have clueless "staff"!

  • I have heated beds for my pups. There are several types, some electric, some microwavable. That might be a solution for the missing heat vent. or a space heater. most now are made with a shut off feature if it is upset.

And try a DAP. Couldn't hurt and might help.

  • Removed for fear of lack of privacy

  • I would just like to add something pertaining to the removal of her off couch, bed, etc. In lieu of picking her up, I would try sitting beside her and slowly move into her and 'make' her move herself to give you the space, until she is 'off' of what ever you want her to be removed from. Just in case, have a treat on you so when she is removed, use the command 'off' while she is on the floor and reward this position. Block her with your body, leg, arm (not hand) if she tries to regain her position. also, have her 'bed' or other appropriate basenji material to lay on while she is on the floor. I have actually gotten on the bed I want Uzie to sleep in and 'coo' words like GOOD BED, OHH BOY THIS IS SO GOOD…..(you get the idea) and he comes over and gives the big bed back to Hershey....(there has been growlies between them about sleeping quarters). Good Luck -hope the peeing gets resolved and that there are no medical conditions!

  • Well we have all of Tayda's latest Fanconi bloodwork back and I'm happy to report that according to Dr. Gonto:

"This dog is PERFECT. I would change NOTHING in the bicarbonate dosing. It does not get any better then this!!!!"

:) This of course makes me very happy.

I did get a course of Clavamox for Tayda in case she does have a UTI - even though I don't really think she does - I'd rather treat her for one, than let it go and do more damage if there does happen to be one.

Still working on figuring out a more comfortable arrangement for Tayda while we're out. Our kitchen is under renovation so once it's done I'll be able to more seriously consider how we can change her "accommodations" while we're gone.

My husband has been doing the "you get nothing until you sit for me" thing and it seems to be getting a bit better with the growling. She still has her moments, but I think overall it is improving.

  • That is great news to start the day with! :) And GOOD HUBBY! :)

  • Hello again - well it's been a couple weeks and though I think the growling at my husband is improving, we are still having issues with her peeing in the house when we are home and in her ex-pen when we are not home. She has been trained to use a litter box which is inside her ex-pen during the day, and she uses another similar litterbox in the bedroom at night. It really seems like the peeing she is doing in the house is deliberate. I don't know if she is doing it cause she senses my pregnancy and is acting out, or if she's being lazy to go outside since it's been colder out… or maybe a combination of both? IF I catch her peeing inside, I will firmly say "NO!" and pick her up and put her outside to finish her peeing. Sometimes she's already done though. Shouldn't this work? :( It doesn't seem to be.

    Any ideas would be appreciated...

@donc It got worse. . . the grass became wet and I made him walk through it ! Poor Mku. But you have given us a task for these work-free days. Composing just the sort of legal document, written by the dog, as your lawyer friend wrote. btw - I am just kidding when I use the words 'work-free' - not many of those.

@tanza I laughed @ “the close enough”! I know my dog is getting old - her face is white and her eyes are getting cloudy - but she will always be my baby. I have a hard time accepting the fact that she is getting older. I am going to have to remind and help her to go outside more often. I thank everyone on this forum for their kind words and comments.🙏🐕❤️🐾 BASENJI STRONG 💪

@Basenji420: We just recently got our new bundle of joy Nala… 8 weeks old. Shes such a sweet heart.... Loves to snuggle up to you and keep warm....plays around and is so much fun. We are having a few i say minor problems. First off... She keeps pooping everywhere in the house. When we take her out to eliminate she only goes to pee. She seems to only poop in the house in the corners of rooms. She pooped outside this morning and we gave her praise and a treat. The breeder had a "kitty litter" type thing in the corner which is why she still thinks she should pee in corners i believe. She keeps nipping at us even though she is a puppy. She takes it too far. We have been consistant with when she does nip or try to bite us we yell out like if it hurt tell her no and even stop playing at that moment and ignore her for a while... She stops for a min but then is back at it again or just keeps doing it right after. She hates the leash...we got her a collar nothing special and we just even tried to put it around her neck and she just keeps scratcing at it...... She always pulls away and resist to even getting use to it. We tried giving her treats and sniffing it to get use to it but to no avail. Any help would be great as we do not want to have to deal with issues that can be corrected to get worse in the future. Thanks, MM Ok well yes we spoke to the breeder and she gave some tips about it. THey didnt use a collar on her before we got her She is also doing much better with going outside and letting us know. GUess it just takes time. I guess i just thought she needed to be walked. She has so much energy sometimes after a good nap but we are not walking her as of yet. I did not use a kitty litter cause i did not want her to get use to this. Why use a kitty litter if we dont plan on using it. THe nipping is still happening but i guess we cant really do much we just stuff a toy in her mouth and tell her chew so she knows to chew/nip on her toys. Anyone have any tips on crate training their basenji.. She absoulutely hates the crate in the day..unless she is super tired and will nap on us then we will take her and put her in the crate.. She HATES being away from us and being along. Has no issues sleeping in the crate at night too. Goes in with ease.

Yeah they do the whole 'omg my fur is all messed up' shake turn around 3 times then flop their furry butts down back in bed. I know about the super light sleeper thing. I too can wake up at the first sound of puking puppy and either throw a towel underneath them or try to get them to the bathroom in time so they can vomit in the sink. Once they get they get those ears going it's hard to stop!

A UTI IMO would be the best case scenario, some antibiotics and bam situation resolved. Changing behaviour is a hard thing to do, it takes time and effort. Having your animal checked for medical issues first is what ANY good behaviourist would suggest when there is a signifigant change in the animal. It makes sense. BTW drinking a lot of water would also make me recommend going to the vet first.

@Kebasmom: don't even get me talking about the little boy who lives here. Oh the moaning and groaning…...at least he is still eating and maintaining weight. Last year he was so skinny!! Oh, the moaning & groaning…LOL...I have videos on my phone of Brando sobbing & howling last year - definitely a noisy time at my house. And, he was a rail after Liyah's season as I was lucky if I could get part of one meal in him each day. Ruby was fine with Aaliyah last year (granted Ruby is spayed - and she actually acted very motherly to her which was kind of interesting) - but Liyah was quite "bitchy" at times and Liyah mostly acted depressed. Ruby wasn't so fine with Brando though because Brando would have taken "any port in a storm" including Ruby - and Ruby wasn't interested in his advances :D:D - so I just kept him separated from the girls. All in all it was easier than I had thought it was going to be - but then again I had 8 wks of training on running 2 packs when Brando broke his leg - 4 wks felt like nothing to me by that point.
