Somethimes sad to see….

  • Breeders that should be considered "responsible" NOT re-testing breeding stock with the Direct Fanconi Test…...

And while, yes, the test has come out late for our breeding season for those that had already bred bitches in early September, there is no excuse, IMO not to have done the direct test as soon as it was available.

  • It certainly does bring to light some peoples shortcomings that will hopefully be a decidig factor for prospective buyers.
On a side note- good luck Pat with Sophies ultrasound this week

  • Lets hope the clubs they belong to will put some pressure on them to conform.

Not a clubs responsibility… if anything needs to be peer pressure, as it was with the linkage test. And the "buying public" needs to be informed....

  • LOL well responsibility–I don't know. I do know other breed clubs that will NOT advertise dogs without requirements met, or list those with on top. Maybe a free congratulatory notice for litters with all testing done on parents?

There are many dog magazines that will and since the BCOA publication is quarterly and only goes to members, even if they did, not much punch to that. The BCOA gives recommendations. Peer pressure is by far for any breed the thing that pushes people to do what others consider required testing.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

Thank you for your detective work, Saba. I think it's a hard "case," but I do think that if I were the original breeder of these dogs, I would want to know what happened to them. Even as a lover of the breed, it makes me feel sad and helpless to see those pictures. I certainly can't jump on a plane to fetch those dogs, and I don't reasonably expect the original breeder to, either. But if it serves as an eye-opening example of what happens when you don't keep in touch with your puppy people, then maybe some good will come out of it… Meanwhile, just as you posted this, Saba, I received an e-mail from someone who was able to do more thorough detective work. They found the Malaysian Basenji owner's Rottweiler kennel, and there's full contact info there, including e-mail. I will leave you more info. I would like to send him an e-mail myself, but I have to think about what to say. I get angry whenever I look at that article and those pictures, but I don't think I would get very far if I just went in there guns blazing. The welfare of those two Basenjis is what concerns me. If they are sick, I hope they are getting medical attention. If they are not being fed, maybe there's a local animal welfare agency I can contact. I know there are cases like this all over the world, every day, and many far worse. It just appalls me that someone can call themselves a "dog expert" and a "top kennel," yet have dogs in such condition -- and PROUDLY display them for the press!
