• Haha no, google won't return any results on the pup yet. Azikiwe will be his call name, but certainly not his AKC name. Kyle and Steve seemed to be receptive to it! I'll update later with the sire and dam information!

    Cheers,

Remind Kyle and Steve to update their website…. I am known in the Basenji world as the Website "pest"..... Breeders need to keep their sites updated, the BYB breeders do a much better job then responsible breeders... which is why many people "flock" to them... and not to responsible breeders. Nothing worse IMO then to go to a site that tells you about the litter they are planning from 2007.....😕

  • Isn't it a great feeling knowing you will bring your little peanut home one day? 🙂 The week before we got Kipawa I could barely breathe!

I know people hear this all the time on this forum, but it IS something worth repeating. Has Azi's parents gone through all health testing (especially Fanconi) and are the results available to you online or in paper form? My little guy was always going to be a companion basenji (no breeding in his future), but I made sure that I knew the health results of his parents.

  • Okay, to the very best of my knowledge, the Sire is BIF UKC Ch. & Am. DC Eldorado's Look Smart at Kaleonahe, SC (Dapper); the dam is Ch. Eldorado's Kaleonahe The Power of One (Bailey). I've been wrong before, but as I remember from my first conversation with Kyle and Steve, this is right.

Pat–I'll let them know they need to update! I couldn't agree more, as it was tough for me to tell who was breeding this season and who wasn't!

Fran--oh yes, the excitement is killing me, but it's definitely an awesome feeling knowing I'm one step closer to getting my boy! Now it's finger crossing that it's a litter full of brindle boys so I can get the one I'm looking for! I have checked OFFA on my own; both parents are probably clear for Fanconi so things look good on that front! Mine will be a companion too (though Kyle and Steve swear they're going to get me to show), but I feel better knowing the parents are solid healthwise!

    Best,
    =Nate

  • Please ask them if they have done the direct Fanconi test. It is recommended that ALL breeding stock be retested now that we have a direct test for Fanconi that replaced the Linkage test in September.

  • They are planning on doing it ASAP, I've already asked. Kyle said they plan to do it within the next few weeks!

  • Nate - good job in doing your homework. Bailey is my girl Aaliyah's sister. :). The reason i asked about the parents was I was wondering if you might be getting a Bailey pup. Kyle and Steve are good breeders, do proper health testing and socialization once the pups are born. I think you will be very happy with a pup from them. Congrats - oh - and we love pics when your pup arrives.

  • SO great to hear regarding the Fanconi testing! Honestly, that last week before getting Kipawa was hell! 🙂 I had done all the puppy proofing in the house and there was nothing left to do but try to breathe! Of course it was fun buying all the toys. I am still bad with that. If I go into ANY pet store, I check the toy assortment. I only buy things that are 8 - 10 on the toughness scale, otherwise they are a not so cheap thrill.

  • I'm thrilled at your news - I guess you're going to be a great Basenji parent.

  • Kim– How fun! My first experience with bailey was pretty great... I think she took to me well. After Kyle and Steve introduced me to their dogs, Bailey came over next to me on the couch and slowly did the B-Lean until she was totally against my side... it was pretty hilarious 🙂

Fran -- I feel your pain. I work in a mall-based store, with a pet boutique right across the hallway from us... I often just go in and think 'I could buy this now... but that might be a little obsessive' I just want to be a great dad! 😛

  • I am so happy, they just closed the pet store in our mall, it is of course tempting but I know better. I know pet stores won't go away but I feel a tiny victory that our "debbies petland" closed

Exactly if they sell puppies…. well done

  • Oi, a store in the mall that sells pets? No bueno.

Moochie and Co. is the shop I'm referring to. They've got so many dog toys and treats, leashes and collars, and coats, oh my! It's a neat little botique, minus the tiny dust-buster dog that's constantly following you around… 😛 It might be where I get Azi's first Ohio State collar during football season (ya know, if the buckeyes ever turn it around)
