Fanconi Re-Test results

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am wondering about the retest kit also. It doesn't say it has shipped just "new kit" instead of the result. Hoping it arrives quickly, it was hard enough to wait until November 1st to order the test.

  • I emailed Carol Skinner back, as suggested, asking about the status of Blaze's retest. Carol sent back a copy of the retest…it's the same as before: Carrier.

In the first email that Carol Skinner sent me saying that they had received my order, she included a link that was supposed to go to the Order Status; however, it just went to the main OFA website. Even now, when I search on Blaze's registered name, all that's showing up is the results of the original test done in May. Even though I now know the results, I'm going to keep checking back to make sure the re-test results show up.

LOL Lisa, me too…. we can compare notes!

Keep in mind that I think that OFA site is only updated twice a month??? Not sure about that, but I know that it is not daily for sure.

  • I should order two kits and get my guys tested. They were both cleared by parentage, but just to be sure I will order my kits and get Tucker done especially before we decide to breed with him. I can just go to the OFA page and order them online there?

There is NO clear by parents especially if the linkage test was used. So, yes you should retest especially if you are thinking about breeding. ALL BREEDING stock needs to be retested with the Direct DNA Test.

And yes you go to OFA page, then to DNA Tests, then to Fanconi and you would order the Fanconi test @ 65.00

  • Thank you for the info, I will get them tested asap.

  • @JoT:

Fran, who have you been communicating with at OFA?

I have been talking to Deb Nichols about the testing kits. If you need her contact details, let me know.

Thanks so much Jo! I'll give them a call today or tomorrow. Kind of a crazy busy day today.

  • I emailed OFA today because for C-Me (like Lisa's L'OX) the site just says New Kit, not that it was sent or the date. I got a response back almost immediately with the date the kit was sent.

  • When was the kit sent? I think L'Ox would have had his sent around the same time so I just want to know when I should expect to see it.

Email said they sent it on the 8th, was not received yet in today's mail. And yes, I would think yours and mine should have gone out at the same time

  • Received today both C-Me's retest kit and Trip's new test kit

  • Hmm I ordered my retest the day I got the email (Oct 30) and the same day got a confirmation email back saying I can check the status on the OFA site. 18 days later it still says, "Retest scheduled," but just now I'm seeing people on this thread saying they got their results weeks ago? Something's not right. I'm going to email/call them.

  • C-Me's re-test came back today(C-Me's was the one that they had to send a new kit as there was not enough DNA from the first test), as did Franie's brother, Trip. Results were as expected, but good to have confirmation. C-Me was pClear on the linkage test. Trip had not been tested till now, but was from a pClear to pClear.

  • Super news! Even if you had a pretty good idea from the tests before, it must be relieving to have concrete results.

While we expected Clear from the breedings since all were pClears to pClears, it is nice to have the Direct test… and anyone breeding needs to have the linkage test retested. I would have been OK with Carriers, because bred in a responsible way there is no reason to toss from a breeding program... same goes for Affected males, they can still be used, bred to Direct tested Clears(my personal opinion I would never use a tested affected bitch). But had any of them come back as Carriers, still means they would not get Fanconi, so I would have been happy!

  • My two girls direct tests had the same results as the first test. I'm happy to have them all confirmed now.

  • Anyone else here order their retest on October 30 and not get any update on the status besides "Retest scheduled"?
I left a voicemail and emailed OFA 2 weeks ago and Debbie said it would take 2-3 weeks from date of order or depends on how many orders are ahead of mine. It's been more like a month and a week.

  • I ordered two sets of tests in Nov and each took ten days total.

  • I also got my retest results today. Ordered when the retest was first announced. I had to submit a new kit just as Pat did. I did not get the results predicted by the marker test. My boy, L'Ox, Kinetic Interesting Times was tested as probably Clear by the marker test and is now Carrier. Though this result is not what I expected, as everyone has said before, it just means less choices if I choose to breed him. This result has me very concerned about his dam's result though. If his first test was just a error on the lab's part then no problem, he is from a Carrier x Clear so we always knew it was a possibility. On the other hand it his first test was consistent with his markers then I am in for much worse new with Rio's test result since she was a p. Carrier with the marker and so if one set markers was already present and the other set was incorrectly indicating normal when in fact the gene was present then she will be an Affected.

It is really important that we all retest with the direct test, you really can't be sure what your dog's status is if you do not.

That is a huge relief about the cheek swab…She absolutely HATED having her blood drawn and has been mistrustful of the vet and vet techs ever since. I didn't not realize that there were many errors in the original test. I stopped frequenting this forum shortly after I had her test done and haven't really heard anything from the basenji world until I got the e-mail. I will definitely get this re-test done as soon as possible and will pick up some strips tomorrow so I can start testing her urine. Thankfully she has not been showing any signs of poor health and has always done well on checkups.

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

I know that quality breeders will keep the lines as strong as possible while making sure the pups are not affected. Really, that is all anyone can ask.

No, I meant it takes about a week to get the test and usually 2 to 3 weeks for the results once they are received back at the lab. Please read my post about breeding on the other thread

@LiveWWSD: Yea, she has quite a bit of African in her Dam's bloodline. Her mother and most of her siblings all test indetermint. I was totally prepaired for the indetermint result, as that seems to be the standard test result for alot of her breeders bloodline. To date none of the Avongara Dogs have had Fanconi and only when crossed with American (include really worldwide Basenjis) has Fanconi cropped up. However there has been ISPID, hips, eye problems with the Avongara imports. Remember that in Africa, there is nature selective breeding for the most part and also remember that you need the gene from both side for Fanconi as it is recessive. If nature selection, could be that if affected they would have died before reproducing.
