Has this happened to anyone?

  • @Kipawa:

People have asked me if Kipawa was a Shiba Inu. I was also asked if he was a fox. :O

I get shiba inu a lot, and he has been mistaken for a fox a few times too. The first time I walked him in my home town, we passed two older men. One did a double-take and just stopped. "Is that a fox?" Of course, smart a** that I am, I said yes. :)

A lot of people guess some sort of terrier mix. Actually, the first vet that I took him to thought that he was a terrier mix. She had heard of basenjis but had never actually seen one.

Most often, people just ask what he is. I guess the breed is so striking that they can tell that he's a PB.

  • My first basenji was mistaken for a pit bull several times – he was a brindle so maybe that had something to do with it. I can see by the head on yours why people might ask about a pit bull. I carried a picture of a p.b. for a short while just to show the neighbors that mine was not.
Now that I've had nothing but red/whites I jsut get a lot of "what kind of dog is that".

  • Over here people aren't even guessing what breed Voodoo might be. The only thing they ask me is if he is a good hunter, what country he came from and what you can hunt with them. That's all they are intrested in, not one has asked what breed he actually is.

I've used one that simply holds a whole can of food in a steel bin, and the dog pushes the door in a little bit to eat the food. My dogs have used it well and I've only run into problem when I change foods and my picky basenji refuses to eat any more of the old food once he notices there's new food, so make sure to completely finish the old one or you'll have a pile at the bottom.

People just don't care. They don't think other people's pets can get sick from what they toss. Wait til it's their pet or worse, child, and watch the hue and outcry over it. Like I said, I keep Imodium tablets with me. Most times a half tablet will stop AJ's runs. I looked it up on the 'net and it is safe to give dogs. It's amazing how fast things can go down their throats, isn't it?

I'm glad everything turned out alright. A long time ago I remember hearing that and used it once with Dakota. It's hard NOT to chase after them and run in the opposite direction but it really does work. We put up a 4 foot wrought iron fence around the front yard. Mine are pretty good about staying in when the door is opened but I would never totally trust them. Hubby did once leave the door and the gate wide open and all three took off down the block. Luckily a neighbor had his dog out and used him as bait to get our three back.
