    I would only rescue them if the breeder had her dogs spayed/neutered. I would tell her the market is bad for Basenjis and has been and will be for several years and that is why she has unsold older pups. I would also tell her if she is not doing any health testing especially for Fanconi then she will not be able to sell them.

    About 7 years ago I e-mailed someone who was selling their under 1 year old male petstore puppy or wanted to use him as a stud for a fee. The dog was registered with an odd registry and I told them that there was no way they would recoup their money from an overpriced petstore puppy and no one would want to breed to him because of the registry and pedigree/health history. I told them their dog was worth $100 at the most and it would be best to have a rescue take him if they were unable to take care of him.

    If someone in CO or a nearby state wanted to purchase them and then give them to a rescue go ahead but I would contact the rescue first to see if the rescue would take them! You could also purchase them as pets for yourself. I would still tell her about breeding untested Bs, how bad the market is and how she should spay/neuter her adult Bs.

    Does anyone know if her breeding dogs have been DNA tested for Fanconi?

    I have the same philosophy about purchasing/rescuing older pups from petstores. I would only do it if the price was low enough and told the store owner that Basenjis do not sell well so do not order anymore of them. I doubt the store would if it was stuck with an unsold pup.

    At the dog auctions, I have a price limit on what I will pay for a B and if there were many for sale, I purchase the oldest ones first as I believe they deserve the most to get out. I have been outbid many times for a B and have gone home empty handed-after driving from Houston TX to MO.

    CoBasenji Rescue is overflowing with basenjis right now, so I'm not sure there's a foster home spot available. Of course somehow Peggy manages to make it all work.

    If she is breeding this year and has pups on the ground then one should not buy from her.

    also, please think long and hard before purchasing a dog from a mass producer so that they can make room for more dogs. This is not someone getting out of the puppy business. Just someone's who could not move their "merchandise" in a timely manner in a bad economy. I know your heart is in the right place.

    I agree, as they say do not enable them….. the only way they will stop is if they can't sell the pups and it no longer is a "cash crop"

    At that price, they aren't making a profit and they keep the dogs from being sold for more puppy mill breeding. I think $200 is acceptable.

    I absoloutely agree with not enabling, it's just 200$ isn't a lot to enrich two lives. It's hard for me to sometimes see these poor dogs when I spoil Oakley rotten as he is the only thing in my life (no kids). I sometimes spend more than that on Oak in a day…I will instead make a donation to BRAT, as has been my Christmas wish from those giving me gifts. At least this way I will feel as though I'm contributing to something

    I just wanted to respond to this thread. I hope everything is going good with you and things are working out. The thing I wanted to respond to was the thought that a man may have abused him since he does not do well with men. A basenji can make their mind up about disliking something for no reason at all. My first Basenji was with me from 6 weeks of age and never had a man abuse him and at two years old decided he hated men for the next two years. I kept him socialized and kept getting men to feed him pet him while I had him stacked and holding his head, had them talk to him, go over hime etc. after a while his dislike left as quickily as it came. I have had a few dogs do this sort of stuff between 12 and 18 months I call it the stupid stage, they all the sudden don't like men, women, the grooming table, the trash can outside etc. It is important to work them through their fear so they can be a complete dog. Just think how it would be for you if say you were scared of men but had to see them daily just think how stressful your life would be. I hope if you keep him you help him get through this or if you place him please be honest with the new owners and recommend that they get him out and work him through this.

    @bellabasenji: It all boils down to what is better for the (so called)"breeders" wallets!!!:mad: UUuuugh… BYB's & millers!!!:mad: That is true, a pure for profit breeder is not going to spend money on health testing that is going to cut into their bottom line. They will do as little testing as they can do and still sell puppies. Educating as many people as possible to demand health testing for both parents is the best thing that we can do for the breed. There will always be some who want a puppy "right now" and won't care but the more people we can educate the smaller the market for puppy mill dogs because really most people do want to do the right thing and want a healthy puppy that will be a long lived companion.
