Bcoa breaking news - fanconi

  • This is FANTASTIC news!!!! I was so happy when I read the e-mail this morning!

I'll have Cheyenne and Zuni retested…unfortunately...there's no need to re-test Apache.

  • Here are some interim details from Liz Hansen at University of Missouri: any Fanconi test ordered since late August has been the direct test only. They are no longer using the marker test. Ordering a Fanconi test kit from OFA is no different than before, but the test that will be done is the new one.
If you previously used the FTA card sample with the saliva swab to have a linkage test done, they are not yet sure whether there is enough sample remaining to extract for the new test. If you want a re-test now (e.g. For breeding stock who may be used this year) she suggests you get a new sample using a new kit. UMo and OFA are still debating how they'll handle the repeat testing.
If you previously obtained a linkage result using a blood sample and want to re-test with the direct test in the very near future (e.g., Indeterminates) Liz suggests you e-mail her

  • I sure never remember BCOA (or the Lab) would re-test" IND's. It was suggested that when we had a direct test, people re-test if they want. Everyone knew going in that there was 4 possible results and what each one represented. And if I did the Linkage tests know full well the possible results, I would consider it to be my responsibility to re-test an IND. I do not believe this is a correct statement.

The direct test will be shown in the OFA database a "Clear, Carrier, Affected" it will no longer say "Probably" as it did with the Linkage test. So it would have a complete new number because it is a different test, regardless of the results

  • Thrilled with the news! A question though, I ordered Oakley a test about three months ago and have procrastinated in getting it done.. Can I still use that or do I have to order a new kit?

You can use the test kit that you now have. It is the same kit. The Lab at U of MO has been using the direct test since late August. So your results will read Clear, Carrier or Affected, with no "Probably" prefix

  • Thanks for the clarification Pat! Will do tonight and send out

  • Great news! Just in time for me to have Bungwa tested.

  • @Patty:

Great news! Just in time for me to have Bungwa tested.

Who is Bungwa , Helena ?

  • Hurray! I know that this is what the basenji community has been waiting for!

Regarding incorrect results (with the linkage test), how close will the DNA test be regarding 100% accuracy?

Until Dr Johnson's talk at the Nationals and that question is asked, don't think we will know that answer. And remember also, that some of the errors were "human" errors, which will always be present.

Since it is the direct gene that was found for Fanconi, I would think that without human error should be pretty close to 100%. When they found the gene for HA all those years ago it was and this is a recessive gene also (the gene for Fanconi)

  • Shelley, Bungwa is one of my males from my last litter, he is named after Bungwa of Blean. His full name is Antefaa Bungwa Forest Glory. I've not been in a hurry to get my males tested as I don't intend to breed again. However I get stud enquiries so couldn't consider accepting until he is tested and this applies to my 3 males. You may meet him at the NBS sometime but as you may know I'm not ultra keen on showing.

Does any one know whether Gary Johnston has published the details of the direct test as I want to forward the link to Jeff Sampson of the UK Kennel Club? They'll obviosly require published information.

@lukris: That's good news about Chance Vicky. At least you know you have to find a nice clear boy for Nakura now. You must be relieved. Chance is Nakura's son so can't use him! The search continues. We need to encourage more people to test are there are only about 6 clear stud dogs in UK at moment. So not much too choose from there!!

@tanza: If you go to www.basenji.org, you can get information about Fanconi from Dr. Gonto that developed the protocol. Best to print it off and take it with you tomorrow… and good luck.... I believe you should print the information about Dr. Gonto's protocal and give the information to your vet. Your vet can follow Dr. Gonto's treatment program, i.e. lab tests to run; follow-up lab suggestions; therapeutic goals; management dosing guidelines, etc. Your vet should read all the information. There is also also correspondence info: address, email and phone/fax numbers to reach Dr. Gonto. So sorry for you and your baby. Good luck with your visit tomorrow. I would go in armed with this information.

@sharronhurlbut: As the test is easy and doesn't hurt the dog, why not test them all? Exactly… and hopefully before the end of the summer we will have a test for Fanconi....
