Puppy weight

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • @Mantis:

HOLY COW, Cairo must be a small basenji?

He is 8 months and weighs 18lbs.

How much do the other puppys weight? Please post. Maybe I am not feeding him enough. He eats a cup of food a day. Are you guys still feeding more than a cup of food?

Don't worry about how he compares to other basenjis :) If he looks good/healthy, then he is at his correct weight. I don't even weight my dogs except for at their annual vet exam…and am always vindicated to see that my eye is accurate with the scale.

I like for my dogs to have a VERY definite waist (viewed from the top) and tuck up (same area viewed from the side). I like to be able to see the ribs, but not each individual rib.

There is a wide range of "normal" in height and weight.

Well put Andrea…. and that is exactly how I like to see them... you can never compare weight as each is built different... some have more bone, therefore weigh more, some are light boned and weigh less...

  • This thread is reassuring, though Paco is definitely way less than your pups. Paco is 9 months now, but at his check-up last month he was only 16 lbs. He's happy and runs and plays just fine, and looks healthy, though, so I'm not too worried (especially after reading the comments here). He's definitely smaller than other 9-month old B's I've seen in pictures, and definitely smaller than his siblings (but they are being overfed) and I've kind of accepted that he may just turn out to be a little guy, which I'm okay with. I still love him. :)

Just think - you will have an adult acting dog that will look like a puppy - could it be better? :)

  • L'Ox is on the small side. He is only about 16.5 inches at the withers. He may gain a little more height and will probably continue to fill out for next couple of years but he will always be a small male.

I know too many puppies and dogs injured or killed due to collars left on unattended. Not worth the risk.

@creambasenji said in New Puppy Advice: She's 9 months and 8.5 pounds. Doesn't seem she will be getting any bigger This must be a typo. 9 months or 9 weeks? At any rate, I'd love to see a picture of a cream Basenji, toy or not.

@giza1: Heck, I never fed my puppies mush either, just softened kibble. And it didn't seem to take very long before the pups would be sitting in the mom's dog dish chewing on her dry kibble. -Joanne When you think about it… softened kibble is mush.... just all depends on how you offer it. And I only do "mush" between 3 to 4 wks after that it is just softened kibble... and in the end.. that is mush

Yes, Nicole that would be good info to add…. but that is going too far at this point. Like Pat said... people have to want to read it. This was just meant to be something that people can START with... Those are basic pages that if someone was looking for a basenji, the would be able to see that the BYB or PM they are considering does NOT fit into .... hence... not the best place to go. Throwing too much info at a person so quickly will be more than enough to make them turn and head for the hills... or buy the first puppy they see... then come looking for help with all it's problems later. The more exercise you can give the dog, the better she will be. Walk her at least an hr 2 times a day… A basic obedience class is also required to help her learn her manners. Good luck.
