Newbie, needs help with a chewer.

  • Another thing you might try is putting a little mentholated cream (like vicks vapo-rub) on the furniture (it doesn't harm wood but it may stay fabric). It lasts a very long time and mine hate the smell.
When home you could also work on a "leave it" command and reward everytime she drops whatever she shouldn't be chewing on. Either she'll learn to stop chewing on the object or she'll learn that she can get a treat if she chews on that particular object :)

  • Even things like soap will sometimes help to "slow" down the chewing on things…..

Paco seems to like soap and sunscreen…he'll lick, go berserk for a bit, then lick again...

    crazy pup.

  • Vicks on electrical cords works great! You have to re-apply often, but may save her life if she is a cord-chewer.

Good luck! Kongs are very tough too.

My husband used an unorthodox approach, he bought Nicky (not a pup but still a chewer) a used 'high quality brand name' purse at a yard sale for a couple of bucks. When he brought it home I said, I don't need that and he said "It's not for YOU" and handed it to Nicky. She was so proud and strutted around with her purse, which she proceeded to settle down to chew. That was over a year ago and there is still a big piece of it which she grabs and chews from time to time. Not saying my purse wouldn't be in danger if I left it out, but she is happy to have her own to chew.

A pup is too young to understand 'my shoe vs. your shoe' but giving Nicky her own things has helped us.

  • Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll try the soap and the vicks. It's the leather chairs I worry about.

  • I just spend $40 at the shoe repair shop for Lou's hubbys shoes. Seems like he doesn't want to put them in the closet, which is ok with Wheat.

  • be careful what you give him as she may swallow pieces of it!!'. I find that when he gets his bones, ( I give Ayo raw beef bones, marrow bones or any other bones ) he loves them and sometimes he'll eat them up right away, but some, especially the marrow bones, he'll eat the marrow inside and then the bone lasts for months and he chews them constantly, never paid attention to toys.

By the way… What is "Spanglish mode"??

  • Sharron - I'm just waiting to be able to get to the shops to buy new overalls, coat and shirt for my husband! In all the years he's lived with Basenjis he still forgets to put his workday clothes (smelling of sheep) out of their way!! What can you do?

  • I think maybe he just wanted some new clothes!! ;)

  • I've stopped giving my dogs bones after my JRT had a slab frature that abcessed. She loved bones.
Spanglish is from a movie with Ben Stiller in it. They warned the new maid never to through the ball because their retriever would continue to bring the ball back until her(the maids) arm fell off.

I agree, I see cattle dog/heeler in there. I really don't see basenji but I really like the picture with that happy, goofy smile…looks like a happy boy to me! Of it helps, I reached my conclusion based on the thickness of the ears (regardless of the fact that they stand), the coat type is thicker and has feathering at the back end which you can see on the "zane2" picture...the muzzle is thicker and bolder than a basenjis which tend to be more refined. Lastly, the body type seems thicker and stockier than the lean that is a basenji. All my opinion but I figure rather than just saying yes or no maybe you'd get more out of knowing the "whys" behind my answer

Oh boy, I can only imagine how intoxicating that pile is to a Basenji. The dark colors absorb a lot of sunlight energy, which Basenjis seem to thrive on. :D

Thanks to everyone for their opinions. everyone here at work decided that they liked the second one, however everyone is distracted by my striped gloves. They also think that Elsie looks huge in her sweatshirt. I havn't decided what I am going to do yet.. I think I will try shooting again and see what those pictures bring. This is why I started taking them early. It is tough getting a picture of Oakie with her eyes open. We make fun that she is like forest gump. I will post the new pictures after I take them… thanks again. Lynne

Gossy would say - there are never enough toys! At a pinch even a piece of paper will do.
  • Okay, I really need you all to…...
