Basenji in Dallas, GA, has a new home!!!!

  • Today, I adopted the Basenji boy in Dallas, GA.
    His new name is "Dallas."
Rather than have him neutered next week, he will be "fixed" tomorrow, and I can pick him up on Saturday afternoon. Also, the director has offered to have him heartworm tested. I'm so pleased with the shelter and their cooperation.

Today, Dallas was clean, in a larger crate, happier, and did not display some of the negative traits I saw earlier in the week. I picked him up and put him in the crate without a fight, nip, snark, fuss.

Can't wait to have Dallas home.

Off topic: Eski Luv will like this! I got a late night email from the director of the rescue group I work with -

this little fellow was to be put down today.
Coincidentally, Dallas, GA, is 1/2 hour from Cedartown, GA, so I picked up Snow on my way home. He will be moving on the Baltimore Sunday or Monday. Snow has had a bath, flea and tick treatment, ears cleaned, eaten GOOD food, played with the Basenjis, and is sound asleep in a warm crate filled with soft blankets. Sadly, his left leg was broken and no one bothered to fix it, so he has a bad limp. Poor abandoned babies.

    Good day for all.

  • That's great news Vicki! I'm sure he'll be forever grateful to you for rescuing him. Post some pics when he gets to his forever home. Great job too in helping with Snow!

  • Yay, Ms. Vicki!! You will make a great pet person for Dallas…congratulations!

  • Yay. He looked so sad. I am glad he is with you.
How old do you think he is?

  • Houston

Vicki, great news, although I already knew…you are an angel..Dallas will be forever thankful to you..and so will Snow.

It is so hard to tell how old Dallas is. My vet will help determine his age. When I first saw Dallas at the shelter, he looked like an older dog, but yesterday he seemed younger. Stress, I'm sure. I'll post more after he is home and my vet has a chance to examine him on Monday. The shelter has been so accommodating.

    Snow
His fostermom emailed this a.m. She is arranging for neutering and has spoken to a surgeon that volunteers his services. Hopefully, Snow's leg can be fixed. Snow is so small he can slip through the railing on my front porch!

  • Vicki you are a love, god bless you I was about to cry over Snow. I've said it before you one of kind your special.

  • Thank you for helping both these dogs. Does the b have dew claws?
Often that is a clue if they came from a "quality" breeder or a for profit breeder.

Really? Buddy still has his dew claws. The rescue lady, Karen said she had an idea where he made have come from and she said he was a good breeder. He's the first B I have had that had dew claws.

  • Dan, its just something I use when looking a unknow dogs and trying to find out where they come from.
The breeders on the list will let you all know they usually take the dew claws off by day 3 for the puppies.
Your breeder may have decided not do to it, but its not the "norm".

  • The majority of responsible breeders in the US remove dewclaws. Also, a responsible breeder would want their puppy to come back to them if they needed to be rehomed.

Sharron - If I recall, he does have dew claws. I was more concerned with fleas crawling all over him, his hernia, not being neutered, and Dallas living in such a little crate when I first saw him. I'll post more when I get him home. Yesterday, when I visited Dallas, I did give him a Comfortis for fleas and left some very healthy chews and treats in his cage.

I'm praying he isn't heartworm positive. The treatment is dreadfully hard on a dog.

  • Oh, you have the health of the b in mind, which is the way it should be. grin!
With the fleas, make sure you get a fecal run, I always do, when dogs come in with fleas. Course, you could have this all covered.
I am so glad your opening your home and heart to this b.
We sure want to give you tons of hugs for this effort.

  • Brilliant news Vicki, cant wait to see pics when he is home safe and sound.
Brilliant news about Snow too, must be a good feeling to see him safe and sound.

  • First Basenji's

Great news and congrats on the new family member! I'm glad that they are both safe. Hugs from Cody and me!
