Gonna try something new - and look what I made!

  • I had a kitty litter box in the house with a dog once…Dog never got breathing problems from it, but he would occasionally score some buried treasure. :D

    LOL! That's so funny!

    We call those..Kitty Tootsie Rolls…yumm-o

  • Many breeders now days litter box train their pups…

  • I hope it works for her. Let us know.

  • Zoni is litter box trained, it was pretty easy. She was paper trained basically when I got her. The dog litter was like compressed paper pellets so it wouldn't be much of an inhalation issue. I did switch to putting newspaper in the box though after a while because she would dig in the pellets. I think I read on another list that you can get something at a feed co-op to fill the box that is pretty cheap but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.

  • Liyah was litter box trained. I used Equine Pine which is compressed wood shaving pellets. When she would pee in it it turned to sawdust. Basically is the same as Feline Pine but quarter the price. I got it at Tractor Supply. Worked great.

I have also heard of using a low litterbox(cat type) and line it with grass sod, apparently it works for several weeks to months before you have to replace the sod..the trick is to find the sod when it is not sod season:).

Our old westie when he was getting up in the years, or maybe even before that..would always pee(have accidents) by the froont door, so I would place papers or peepads and he would use those, rather then peeing on the floor..the other dogs would just look at him, as if he was a loon for peeing on the pads rather then wait until he got out..poor guy.

I think if the papers work, why change it..sounds like she is doing good..

  • Thanks for the recommendation - Ive never heard of equine pine before but i went to the tractor supply website and there is a store about 20 minutes from me so I'll go check it out!

Take it REALLY REALLY slowly. Be sure to make good things happen when they are together and getting along. It took me 7 months to get my 4 yr old basenji rescue (who has a very high prey drive) to coexist with an old cat. If there is a bad experience, it can set everything back months, so be very careful to set up good experiences and avoid bad experiences.

@Hooligan: Hello all, Plus it was expensive! Over 3k! I'd do it again in a heartbeat but it can only happen so many times, lol. yikes! I know some people have suggested getting another dog for separation anxiety, but he doesn't like other dogs at all, so that's not an option for us. Does anyone have an opinion on kennel vs. crate? I want either one to be positive - his home & refuge, not punishment. I don't want him to dislike going in the basement because of the kennel, because we want to encourage him to go hang out with Josh in the studio. I worry it's colder in the basement, but he'd have more room. I don't know if we should try covering all the wood somehow so he has only chain link, or if we need to buy a separate, fully-enclosed chain link & metal kennel? Or stick with the crate? I feel bad about putting him in the crate. He can stand and turn but it's not that big. It's kind of nice that we can have the crate upstairs anywhere and we have been playing games of find-the-treat with him so he gets to associate the crate with good things and it's not as easy to do that with the kennel. What do you all think? Thanks guys! I am sorry that I suggested the other dog, didn't know he 'came' that way to you. I have provided a referral list from the website of certified trainers and behaviorist in your state. http://www.ccpdt.org/index.php?option=com_certificants&task=directory&state=WI I personally know Sarah Kalanjas by way of attending her seminars. http://www.bluedogtraining.com/problem-behavior.html If you do hire someone, make sure that they understand the CAT/BAT or counter conditioning process for your boy and his (possibly) fear aggression with other dogs. Maybe in stead of having any wood in the chain link kennel, just have one or two kongs and such in a plain ol chain link with a chain link topper on it. Construct it so it is large enough for him to use a corner to potty (grass mat?) if he so needs (don't know how long you both are gone….) a medium large one or so for long periods. http://www.doghouses.com/dog-kennels/dog-kennels-and-runs/cottageviewdogkennel1.cfm hoping for the best for you!
