    Today we went to a Fun Dog show in a local park in aid of Guide Dogs for the blind.
    Malaika won a second for the Dog in best condition and a third for having the most appealing eyes. There was a lot of Dogs in all classes so we think she did very well. Think it helped when she high fived the judge ;)
    We met a man who had a Dog for the disabled and he was telling us the story behind getting his Dog. Apparently the Dog had been badly abused and he needed to do a lot of rehabilitation with him . He is now able to help the man with lots of household tasks and leads a happy life. It was heart warming to see how things have worked out for both Dog and human.

    Congrats to Malaika on her 'wins'. Well done!

    It's just so heartwarming to hear about dogs who help those with disabilities. The fact that the dog was abused makes it extra special. How wonderful that these two met up - probably it was just meant to happen.

    Congratulations. Malaika is doing very well at her shows.
    What a lovely story about the abused dog, so nice that it turned out good for that dog eventually.

If the age part is true, the rest is not (unless there's difference between our European bred Basenjis and those in Africa): NARRATOR: Sharing the same curly-tailed trait [as the Akita] is the venerable African Basenji. DEBBYE TURNER: Basenji is the granddad of ancient dogs. However, they’re not that trainable. They will not do obedience tricks like other breeds. Come back here. And here’s an example! NARRATOR: There is something else very wolf-like about a Basenji… SOUND OF DOGS HOWLING NARRATOR: …its yodel. These breeds reveal much about how dogs may have appeared and acted after they first transitioned from pack hunters to scavengers and provide clues as to why they may have first appealed to humans.     Yeah, after the first two, breed and group I was starting to think we had a chance, I thought , if he keeps this up…... But of course.. It was funny, he just would not stand still , I kept having to get up and do a turn and return to position and he would be ok and then just when the judge was passing by.... Again..... Of course it didn't help that it was on grass, and there were ants! They kept biting his legs and he kept jumping up and I had to take them off of him and move to avoid them... It was horrible. There are always ants Herr when its on grass!!!!

    That was amazing…he was a gorgeous boy. I'm watching the breed selection video now and all those dogs are beautiful! Of all the B's in the breed video, number 9 (little girl) a tri beauty who stopped to scratch an itch during judging, number 16 (little girl) a black and white, and number 18 (little boy) a red and white are my favorites.They were all beautiful, but those really stuck in my mind. What I found so amusing is that number 9 the one that scratched her itch was the best of breed for our little angels. She did a wonderful job and showed beautifully. She was a great representative of this breed!

    Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs

    Broken Tooth in a Show dog

    One of our dogs broke a tooth on the side of her mouth that had to be extracted (the crack went straight through vertically, no way to cap or anything). I was so worried since it is one of the back teeth she used to chew things (and she loved to chew). Outside the initial healing period of a week or 2, you would never know it was removed. She can still chew through your average dog leash in about 30 seconds if you do not watch her. :)

    Yes, the tape works great, but I think I know what rubber brush you mean. My sister has a broom like that - she got it at an Equine Affair in MA one year. It works great. Gets all the hair up when she sweeps. She's got a black Aussie/Golden mix - can you say HAIR??!!! I don't think I could handle it…LOL!
