Lost basenji in New Philadelphia, Ohio

  • Houston

I found this online, might be helpful..

  • Talk to mailmen and kids, these people are out and about in the neighborhood. Post a Lost flyer at your post office (if they'll let you). Take one of your basenjis with you "Have you seen a dog like this around?"

  • Dot has not yet been found, but the calls and help from neighbors and everyone is encouraging and means a lot.

The craigslist rust colored dog was an older beagle mix…

Today, a neighbor saw a small brown dog running with a small black dog near my driveway, but when I searched I didn't see any. There was a collar on the brown dog, which Dot was not wearing, but someone could have put it on her....A vet told me not to give up; they have found 2 lost/stolen dogs before...living with other folks. I feel good that there are lots of eyes looking for her. I put out more flyers this past weekend, farther and farther out. I will keep searching everyday. Dot, please come home!

So sorry to hear that you have not found your little Dot yet. I am glad to hear that you have your spirits up and are still searching for her. Please don't give up yet, she will come back to you, I just know..

  • The link from basenjimamma was extremely helpful! It gave me the idea to again distribute "reminder" letters to my neighbors, since one of them saw a small brown dog near the driveway today….

it has been 3 weeks today....what if Dot is unsure of where home is and needs lured to return? Do you all feel this breed would go feral quickly?

On the website, there was a comment about "people feel coyote are dangerous to dogs" is something I have heard a lot in my search. That Dot was a victim....I do live in the country, but I won't let that sad possibility stop me from finding her.

Thanks again to you all. Will update soon.

    No news yet?

  • No news. Oh how today has been a really hard day for me. Missing her. She is the first thing I think about when I wake up. I think about her all the time… I read something today that said we need enough pain in our lives so that the joys are more meaningful and we need enough loss to appreciate what we have...give your dogs a big hug...and your human family too!

Still hoping for Dot-bear's safe return...

  • Other notable places to try are…

Off-leash park bulletin boards, as well as retail pet stores / shops usually have boards to tack on postings. I constantly check the bulletin board located at the front of our off-leash park. These are places where people with pets will go to on a regular basis.

Grocery stores and coffee shops are places with high people traffic that usually have community boards that people can post on.

When you get a chance to post a pic, try using pics that show markings only original to Dot or something that people may have commented on - like the infamous B tail. I've attached an example of our B's marking.

    To attach a pic...

    • click on the "go advanced" button. This will appear when you're replying to a post. You'll see it at the bottom of the page.

    • click on the paperclip looking icon if the pic is on your PC

    -or-

    • click on the 'insert image' icon [the mountain and sun looking icon] if you have an image online

Hope this helps with finding Dot…

Sorry to hear that you still haven't found her. I will keep praying you'll find her safe and sound.

  • Don't want to give false hope but there is a found red and white dog listed in the Dayton Daily News. I realize that its a bit far but stranger things have happened and we all know how much ground our B's can cover without even trying.

or somebody found it and took it "home" only to realize that he/she can't control the breed..

    worth looking into, fingers crossed..

  • BART, I checked the Dayton Daily News for the found ad, but I didn't see it. There were ads posted back to 9/1. When did you see that ad? I'm sorry I hadn't checked back sooner on this forum, but I finally got high-speed internet this past weekend (I was on dial-up for years). I have still been walking and searching for Dot! I was at the HSUS tonight. I would like to call the person in that Dayton ad; would you still have the ad for the number? If not I will contact tht paper and see if they can help me find it. My email is lish312@cs.com if you want to send it there. Please type Dot in the subject line so your not mistaken for spam. Thank you all.

  • Here is a pic of Dot…that is Femi's tail on the left. You can see Dot's mostly red face here, no blaze. You can't see her small white dot on the back of her neck...about an inch in diameter. She has no neck collar, just the dot and a white chest. What a pretty girl who we miss more than anything.

  • lish312 - sorry I haven't gotten back sooner also, been offline all week except for work. Anyway, the ad was in the paper the day I responded on the forum - the 16th - and also for at least a couple of days later. I think it had been posted on the 9th or 10th. I, unfortunatly, did not save it. If I knew how I should have linked it to my post. I will definitely figure that out for future reference. All it said was that there was a found red and white dog, 25 pounds, on or near Tylersville
Rd. (this part I only know because I mapquested it at the time and it was still in that history). It did not say if it was male or female. Wish I could be of more assistance but that's about all I can tell you. I will send hope and prayers your and Dot's way. Best of Luck!!!

    BART

FYI: it was under classifieds-announcements-lost & found

  • Hi lish312 -

Any luck yet? First I've seen this post - haven't been on here much lately. I too am from Ohio & will keep my eyes & ears open, if she's still missing - so sorry to hear about this…

  • Just thinking, having recently read the thread on Rat Terriers under "other pets", maybe you should not limit the search to "basenji". It certainly appears that it would be very easy for someone not in the know to mistake one for the other. Again, hope and prayers!

    BART

  • Good thought Bart - you're right - seems not a lot of people know what a basenji is.

  • Hi all. Just a quick update…still no Dot. I hope for her return everyday. Sorry to not have visited lately...but I cry when I write to you all....I'm able to talk about her without losing it now. Bart and Holly, thank you....and I do call everyone in the paper who finds any small dog...I think I helped a Jack Russell get back home becuz I saw both the lost and found ads...that was a great feeling. I hope all your Bs are safe and warm!

  • Still saying prayers. Hang in there. You cannot have miracles without the bad stuff…. ( got that from a 10 year old student in my class) . 🙂

  • The paper should have an archive dept. Call them and tell them what you are looking for, they should have it, or the library might. It's worth a shot.
