First time camping

Basenji Talk
  • Last week I took Gossy and went camping for a couple of days. It was her first experience and I think she did well. However, she did not like to hike in the woods very far - she'd reach a point as turn to me and say "that's enough, I'm heading back to the camp". She also didn't like the sound of rushing water or waterfalls – several of the trails crossed the rivers at waterfalls and she would not go on the bridge, even if I picked her up she would fight me to get off the bridge.

The park was along the north shore of Lake Superior near the Canadian border. Here are a few pictures from when we went down to the lake Superior (for our non-USA friends, this lake is the biggest in the US and often has ocean-like weather).

  • Lovely pictures Wizard. Gossy looks like she's eyeing the lake up and thinking "I'm not going in there !"
The lake does actualy look like the ocean to me.

  • Lake Superior is great (well maybe not in the Winter :D ).

Looks like Gossy had a great time. I've always had issues with Kananga and bridges until he gets used to a specific one. Did she have fun in the water at all? :D

  • Actually though she hated the river water she was curious about the lake waves. One time she stood at the end of the waveline and got her paws in the wet sand but not close enough to get splashed by waves. I thought the picture of her with the driftwood log was funny - she seemed to think at first that the log was some kind of strange creature and she was really hesitant to approach it.

  • Thanks for the pics and how it went. When you start taking them out in different environments you find out what they like and don't like. I took Buddy to the beach for the first time and he ran right into the ocean to play with the other dogs. He's a go with the flow dog. He's just a bit cautious walking in the dark which all Basenjis are.

  • Very nice pics! Sounds like great fun, going camping with your dog!

  • Sounds like so much fun. I love the pic with Gossy and that wicked dangerous looking log…scary..LOL

We made the mistake of getting a cheap pen with horizontal wiring ($35). Then we got this as recommended by Michelle Lennon ($99). He can't get out of it, though for several weeks he could squeeze through. At 13 weeks, he's too big for that now. Regalo 192-Inch Super Wide Adjustable Baby Gate and Play Yard, 4-In-1, Bonus Kit, Includes 4 Pack of Wall Mounts Regato 192" gate I also recommend her "Dream Dog" course. I trained 9 years ago with a local pro, but this is more detailed and better organized. Takes a month for a person to get through the course, worth every penny. She also offers a lot of free content, and if you go to the "pro" level for another $75 per month, one can access three weekly zoom meetings with her and co. and get questions answered 24/7 via their facebook interface. For what one gets, it's a real bargain. I used it for a month and found it very helpful. How to Train a Dream Dog To be sure, I don't agree on every detail. For example, I do no-leash walks in woods; they don't recommend that. Also, her course is not really designed to train an active "outdoor" dog, but more for an "indoor" dog. She opposes electric fences and doggy doors. I've had great experiences for 9 years with both and will continue to use them (started electric fence training last week and making good progress). But otherwise, her course lays out solid foundation work. She trains you to be a puppy trainer and provides all the real-time help you could need. Happy training!

@Cafu LOL on cutting leash.. I am certain they have retractable scissors in their gums. I have had mine cut leashes and cut straps to clothing that were so smooth, nothing else but scissors explains it (okay or razor blades). Which is why I put these on the collars... snap/ o ring, chain, o ring, leash [image: 1508253202524-leash.jpg]

@Quercus: Yes…I have that feeling regularly! It takes my breath away when Bella floats across the yard at over six years old...she looks as beautiful as she did as a puppy...moreso even :*) And then the spell is broken, as her son uses her as a mop to clean up all the dirt on the patio ;) Ha, ha, ha…mine is a similar story... I'm in awe the way Ruby moves...it is breathtaking. And her coat is dark chestnut so the white is soooo white, she is beautiful. And Brando is so muscular and such an incredibly male looking boy...so handsome. Liyah's coat is gorgeous...really dark chestnut with not a lot of brindle stripes...they are all so lovely to look at and I think how lucky I am that they are happy and healthy. And then "snap back to reality"...Liyah goes and clamps on Ruby's neck or grabs Brando's tail and then the noises of "cujo" end my beautiful picture. :D:D:D

@rammaam: The only way to bath my two, is to take them into the shower. I use the sprayer with hose. My husband get in the shower and bathes them and I hold the other so he does not escape the bathroo. Then its his turn. While he getting his shower, i'm drying his sister, (with lots of help). It ends up with everyone soaked. lol… Mya showers as well. She just can't stand the bath. But she'll tolerate the shower. :p
