Keoki the Basenji

Basenji Rescue
  • Thanks, everyone, for responding so warmly. Keoki is about 6, house trained but can be naughty (he likes stealing sandwiches if he can get to them). He was crate trained as a pup, doesn't like the crate anymore and hasn't needed it; he has full run of the house and doesn't destroy anything. He likes kids and grew up with cats and a chihuahua. The car thing … he unfortunately prefers to sit on the driver's lap while in the car. We've gotten used to it and just strap him in with us but most people are horrified.

    Keoki lives in Clearwater.

  • Do you think it would be possible to arrange a playdate? We are in Wesley Chapel and would love to meet Keoki to see if he and Kona would get along. Let me know what you think.

  • I've sent Keoki's dad a text and will let you know about a playdate asap. He's been to doggie daycare and the dog park a lot, but we've never seen basenjis out and about.

  • Great! There is a group of Basenjis that we go visit at West Park dog park near the Tampa airport, but those are the only ones we have seen around too. There are a lot of them there though.

Kona is very friendly, but cautious at first. We have had her since last November and she was a rescue from the humane society. She is our only baby though so she gets our full attention, so we need to see how she does with someone else getting some of the attention :P

  • Oh and do you have a picture?

  • Is there a way to privately message people through this forum? I'm going to try to post a picture of Keoki, too, but it might be easier if we just spoke one on one rather than in this thread.

  • I am not sure, but e-mail me at this old e-mail address and then I can give you my actual contact info, ok?

  • @Kona:

Also, can you give us the run down like they do with the BRAT listings? Is he Fanconi-clear? House destructive? Does he ride well in a car? Good with other basenjis? Good with kids? Is he crate trained? etc.

Thanks. My husband and I have considered getting a second basenji and we are just north of Tampa.

Isn't Clearwater just north of Tampa? Sounds like fate to me:)

  • Sounds like this all might work out. I am sorry that it is taking this turn, but hopefully Keoki will find a new home he is welcome in since the "package deal" went south. I will keep my fingers crossed for all of you.

  • This forum has had some good matchmakers' lately, I hope this works out, Kona is a doll! And we need another tri at the park, we are almost outnumbered by reds lately!

  • Beckaboo, there will be a bunch of basenjis at West Park on Sunday from 11 till 2 or later. If Kona and Keoki can get together there, on neutral territory, it might be a good first meeting place.

I like the names together, too!

  • Hi Vicki -

We actually have Keoki with us right now. He has been here since Sunday and we are making sure that he and Kona get along ok. Everything is going well so far! He is such a sweet dog and very well behaved. We will keep you all posted.

    Lisa

  • Lisa, That is great news. Let us know how Keoki and Kona is doing, it sounds as if they might become good friends…for life.

Oh how wonderful! I hope that this works out great for all involved. Keeping my fingers crossed for you all.

  • I'm so glad they are getting along, Lisa! Even if he is put off by her energy, Kona is such a sweet girl he will soon tolerate her antics. And we need a "well behaved dog" in our Sunday dog park gang!!

  • Lisa - Bless your heart.
I'm so happy you have Keoki with you.

  • Thanks everyone. We are really enjoying Keoki. If anyone has any advice on bringing a new B home that is a few years older than the first one, we would appreciate it. Kona wants to play all the time (she is about 18 months) and Keoki (6) isn't that interested. We are trying to teach Kona to leave him alone, but she isn't responding that well yet. Any advice?

I think you need to mostly leave them to figure it out…. unless it gets way to intense.... but I am sure others will have better advise for you, especially Sharron

  • our first b was jonny, age 2. our next was HAnsel. he is 5. we see some of the same with jonny wanting to play. HAnsel just kind of ignores him sometimes. but they do play a lot and most of the time in good fun. i dont let them get wild in the house. when they start in i take them out to play. they get it out of their system they come back in. some times HAnsel starts it. i dont ever let them get to the angry stage. they either quit or stay out side until they are calm. they seem to work it out them selves. we also will kennel them if they dont get calm after playing. that works too.

He did look like he had short legs but I thought his body was long for a Rat Terrier. I am so used to them having a docked tail and much more white on the body. I thought he may be a poorly bred Basenji. Mansfield is not too far away from the Amish area. I wonder if he barks much! Jennifer

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

@BasenjiDiva: Wow, Vicki. Although we are down in Savannah, we also have a place up between Young Harris and Hiawassee. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Don't know how our little female hellion would do with your female though. Our male would probably be okay. Also would love to hear more about your petsitting business that you mentioned. When we are up there we would sometimes like to be able to leave for awhile without worrying about the beasties. Pat Hello - Yes, I would love to meet you when you visit your vacation home. razzcinn at aol dot com. I have two female Basenjis that are doing well together, but I, too, would be concerned about another female Basenji. Monday, I'm interviewing a retired older lady who pet sits and she will stay in the home all day and night, if needed. I need a dependable sitter, too. I often babysit for people who would like to go to dinner and get away w/o worrying about their pets. If I can't help you, I'm certain I can recommend several other dependable sitters.
