Maverick Update!!

Basenji Talk
  • ***Maverick is still doing WONDERFUL!! He is sleeping better and better. He is becoming VOCAL!! He tries to get my attention now with a little growl/whine/baroo!!! Its SOOOO VERY exciting to her him! He BEST Friend in the WHOLE world is Aiden. They do everything together and im actually surprized! When Aiden is upset, Maverick is quick to comfort him! Only complaint is the HUGE interest in Diaper changes. lol!! He is still going on the paper and LOVES to be outside. He just joined a puppy playgroup for an hour every Sunday as well! Its a ton of fun watching him grow and develop! He is just PERFECT!! Cant wait until Geoff gets Home from his underway so he can really spend some time with Maverick! PICTURES TO COME!!

  • Glad to hear all is going so well…. missed hearing from you... and yes, I am sure that "diapers" are a big interest to Maverick...ggg Puppy play group sounds perfect....

You will find, however with a pup that is papertrained... that it can be diffcult to "retrain" him to go outside.. and not think that every piece of paper in the house is meant for his use...

  • hahahaa true…Im going to do the whole put the "Paper" outside and let him pee on it out there, but its SO cold, i dont want to take him out, poor guy, he shivers, but i force myself to take him out a few times a day for a few minutes at a time...no pees out yet, but still doing well!!

  • Just remember, they remember what paper is for… ggg... my Kobey who lives with Ann and Crystal... was "raised" using paper... and it was not a problem until he decided that the mags on the floor were just like newspaper... gggg

So just keep that in mind when/if you have problems later on with him peeing on things you consider not acceptable... he will see "paper"... and think it is OK....

Would a litter box help avoid this? I'm still trying to decide whether to use this or newspaper/puppy pads. The puppy will be paper trained when I get it so it will already be used to that.

  • Re diapers, we had the great nephew visit, still a 2 yr old and the diaper was not put into the kitchen trash.
Needless to say, the b's tried to eat it, and we had to make the basenji throwup to make sure they didnt' have any of the material in their tummies.
They know how to clean up the camp! that is for sure.

  • I use a 'litter box' with mine. Just a cardboard box and shredded newspaper with a puppy pad in the bottom. I think there's a pic of them playing in it. They all get what it is supposed to be used for and for the most part use it-if I can keep the toys out of it. After it gets a little warmer, I will transfer the whole box outside and they will still use it, but will start pottying outside by themselves and the box will disintegrate. By that time they are going outside full time by themselves. Personally, I haven't had a problem yet.

Litter boxes are great for pups… and the material they sell (pellets) are a much better choice then newspaper (IMO).... I raise mine with a litter box, but then being in California, 99% of the time they are starting to go outdoors by 4/5 wks... unless we are having a really rainy year.

And if your pup is using paper, you can put paper in the box with the pellets for a bit and then get rid of the paper...

How much longer till you bring your girl home???? Must be getting close now?

  • A litter box sounds like the way to go. Thanks!

Nemo and I are going down to get the puppy on the 28th, at 10.5 wks. Yeah! :D We still don't know which one yet. After Sue picks her keeper, there is only 2 left.

@tanza: You are correct, accidents happen even with responsible breeders, but that doesn't mean that health testing of those pups should be any different than a pure bred litter. Mix breeds can have eye problems just as much as pure breds. That is correct, those mixed pups got the exact same treatment as our purebloods, and the buyers, got the complete Basenji handbook that I had put together years and years ago. And you are correct any dog, pure or mixed, needs to be vetted yearly.

My boys, Aiken and Donge, are 8 months old now and today was probably the first day I didn't have to chase them away from something. Well, Aiken did steal some toilet paper from the trash can and run down the stairs while Donge ran guiltily to me. When I tell him, "Aiken, drop that!" He hurriedly drops it, but then runs to the door. He drops the wad he grabs and keeps a piece about the size of two quarters hidden within his mouth to play with when I'm not looking. The little brat!! Really though, They were really pretty calm besides the races through the house.
