Icky problems

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Yes, she is still drinking just fine.

We tried white rice later this evening, she didn't even try it.
I have been cooking the chicken in a skillet… just by itself. Maybe we'll try ground turkey. I managed to find a emergency vet in Geneva (he was in bed when I called, quiet polite though) and he accepted her as a walk in tomorrow morning.

    I'll keep things posted.

  • Try boiling the chicken in water until very, very well cooked and drain off the fat, the whole thing with a bland diet for tummy problems is to get rid of the fat so that it is easier to digest…. Good sign, however is that she is drinking

  • I hope she doesn't have an obstruction. Good luck with the vet in the morning.

  • If she has had an upset stomach, sometimes the best thing is to fast for 24 hours before offering food again. If she is drinking plenty of fluids, sometimes just giving a little time the stomach to settle can do the trick. Then a bland diet for several days. There are a variety of recipes, my vet recommends white minute rice since it is the easiest digested. We use cottage cheese added to the rice but other recipes call for boiled meat with the fat drained off.

Let us know how she is doing.

  • Sahara was sick with the same last week, she is never sick so it worried me and the hubby. I took her to the vet and they couldn't find anything really going on except she was very nauseous. The vet gave her a shot for that, told me to give her plain white rice the next morning, nothing until then. I did and she was not interested so I boiled up some chicken and added it to the rice, she ate it. Just small amounts at first, the next day she was much better, not vomiting. The vet said she probably got into something that did not sit good with her stomach. I love my vet she had me call her the next day to let her know how Sahara was doing. Good vets are PRICELESS!!!!!

  • Hope it clears up soon.

So a very worrying day yesterday. The vet saw a large spike in white blood cells… so he figured infection, but he also didn't want to miss a bowl obstruction.... hence X-rays.. and then contrast X-rays. And fluids and injections of all kinds. IN the end, he wants to sterilize her (I got the nod from the breeder, yay) in case of a infection of the uterus... and he has been giving her medications for a bowl infection as well. We are going back in tomorrow for a further consult and to review all the Xrays etc. She still isn't really eating her super bland diet, but drinking fine. ... the worst part was hearing her screaming from her cage in the vet office when I was across the street. I had to bring back some papers to the vet and leave again listening to her screaming.. ugh.

BUT one thing to make you all smile... my dear vet, who only has one other Basenji patient decided to put Lycia in a cloth pop-up crate... HEHEHEHHEEH.. I'm sure you all can imagine.. she made short work of that and was running for freedom around the vet office. By the time I got here, the nurses were happy to give her back to me. :P

Total day's cost for the "responsible owner" $6000 dollars.

  • *ah! a zillion post - Alex help here? =)

  • Hoping that you get good news today…. and that they figure out what is going on....

  • Back to the Vet office we went. Another round of injected antibiotics sigh another round of blood work - but YAY! My vet told me something along the lines of a scary high amount of white blood cells was 11 - and Lycia when she came in was at 22!! She is back down to 7 which is good
we are going in Friday for oral anti-biotics and more talks for her upcoming spay.. more torture for mummy, having her go under. She just cries so much when they take her in the backroom.. ahhh.

but at least we are happy to be on the upswing. Just really looking to put on some weight since she still isn't really happy about eating.

    to be continued.

  • I hope the vet figures out what is wrong & that your baby girl recovers soon. You are a good mommy to be taking such good care of her :) She's a lucky pup. Thinking about you & her as she gets better!

Like Pat, I rotate foods, give them some of most things I eat (just a bite or 2).. so changing foods fast isn't an issue. Right now, yes do it slowly. Origen is good. And yeah to the pumpkin suggestion.. a few spoons can help help firm up the stools.

Just looking at her pedigree, I really would urge you to have her DNA tested for Fanconi especially if you consider breeding her. There is lots of Fanconi, both Carriers and producers of Affecteds in the pedigree from years past before we had a DNA test.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear things are going better. Tiggy lost two of his teeth today too, I think (for as much as he'll let me look, lol) he only has his top canines left.

how big is the lump? it could be as simple as a pore clogged with oil. it can feel like a cyst and by massaging it you can get it to head over time. Or try a warm wash cloth. Shot reactions, like they said, are on the shoulder blades. Caesar has a reaction to a shot and his shoulder blew up to a softball size. The vet tech that gave a shot didnt insert it in the correct manner and it dissolved with time and a Benadryl shot. Does your pup react when you touch it like it might hurt? What size is it? When Cairo was being neutered the vet pulled two teeth (canine and molar) that were not completely out or pushed out by the new teeth. They didnt charge me that much because he was already asleep. This is a great time for them to inspect and fix anything. They charged me $50 for pulling a baby canine that didnt come out and a molar that was on its way out.

Rascal has some serious stomach issues. The last time we fell off the wagon and didn't monitor her food intake well she developed pancreatitis. One piece of information our vet gave us, that I've begun to follow religiously, is to check the fat content in all of your treats and food. For a sensitive stomach it should be around 4-6 percent. Anything more is hard on the digestive tract. After checking most of the treats in the food aisle, and believe me I have, you'll see that the range falls anywhere from 4 up to 16 percent fat or more.
