Beautiful little girl !
Hi from Wisconsin!
-
Hello All,
I posted in the forum a few months ago but never took a chance to introduce myself. My basenji Nemo is a little over 4 years old now, and I got him from a local breeder in Appleton, WI when he was 9 months old. A friend of mine owned his father and was taking care of Nemo at the time and I knew from his mellow personality that he would mesh well with my senior beagle, Zachary. Zachary passed away from cancer about a month ago so I'm potentially considering getting a new basenji in the near future, likely a puppy this time. I think Nemo definitely needs a companion to play with. I'm also interested in participating in lure coursing, so I'm sure I'll have a number of questions on both fronts and others.
I posted a few pictures of Nemo in the gallery. I had a few technical difficulties so some are duplicates (If anyone knows how to delete pictures, I'd appreciate the tip.)
Best Regards,
Clay -

Welcome! What part of Wisconsin are you in? I am located near Sheboygan, not far from Appleton! What breeder did you find in the area? when we looked we couldn't find one…but soon decided to go rescue instead, so I didn't try that hard

I'm in De Pere, so even closer than Appleton. Nemo's breeder passed away a few years ago so I imagine that's why you didn't find one close by. There are some breeders listed in WI and the UP on the BCOA and the BCOSW websites but there are others nearby in Minnesota and Illinois too.
I'm glad you found a rescue basenji nearby. I've looked some but they don't seem to appear up in WI too often.
Oh, and pictures in the member galleries….

Wow! I bet I know which breeder you are talking about, well kinda. I actually live in Kiel, and one day I was walking my dog and this lady ran out of her house and was like "is that a basenji??" We talked, and she said her best friend (who is passed away a few yrs now) used to breed them… I bet its the same person
We got Tosca in Iowa actually, I think we just lucky finding her in a shelter, I didn't know what BRAT was at the time, we just got her off of petfinder.
Do you know anyone else in the area with basenjis? Besides someone in Two Rivers, I have never me another basenji in person. -
Yes, that sounds like the same person, I believe she had ties to that area.
I know of a few other basenjis from the same breeder that used to live in Green Bay, but they now live in Minnesota. My vet says they have about 2-3other basenjis that go to their office but I haven't met them. So I really don't know any other ones in the state.

Aw, Nemo looks like a sweet boy. Bet he'll anjoy a basenji buddy - does he seem to miss your beagle?

Welcome Clay and Nemo. I was going to say I'm not to far from you, then I realized that was in perspective of how far some of our fellow forum posters are from us.
Sorry about the passing of your Zach. When my Tyler's companion passed, we were clueless about how or if dogs grieve (now, in my opinion, they do). Hope you find a good match for your B. Watching pups play goes a long way toward healing a heart.
Thanks for the pics of Nemo, and again welcome:)

In case you have not yet… please consider doing the DNA test for Fanconi, especially since they now can to it with a cheek swab instead of a blood sample....

Tanza, I was excited to hear about the cheek swab. It's not on the site yet - do you have any idea when they'll launch that program? Fiji and Bongo are both 3 now so we're strip testing but I'm looking forward (well, nervously) to getting that farther-reaching prediction.

It will be on the OFA site, to get the paper swab cheek tests shortly. Might not be till after the Nationals this coming week… they will be $5.00 for the test kit... and remember, you still need to register your Basenjis on the CPP site (but that is free)

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I hate to read too much into Nemo's actions, but I think he is grieving a little, or at least is a little more lonely for a playmate. But he is getting lots of extra attention which I hope will make up for it.
And I just sent Nemo's blood sample off this week for the Fanconi test, so I've got my fingers crossed. Although the cheek swab would have been nice.
