What noises does yours make?

  • Whenever we're out & about with the kids, people always ask what noises they make. So I was wondering how much/what kind of noise other basenjis make…
Booger has never been much for yodeling or barooing. He will only do it if Lola starts & we encourage it with our own howling until he gets all worked up. He has always been a grumbler, though. He's like a little old man if you're "annoying" him when he's comfy or coming to close when he's enjoying trash or something else he shouldn't have. Its almost like a growling sound, but not quite that mean.
Lola is very vocal. Every morning when we wake up she baroos several times, and she won't stop until you get out of bed. When we come home she greets us with baroos, and if somebody/thing else is getting all of your attention when she wants it, she baroos some more. She also learned the grumbly thing Booger does. She didn't do it when we first got it, and she only does it in the same situations Booger does. He used to grumble if she tried to cuddle or disturbed him while sleeping; now she does the same to him.

  • She-Ra has different types of Baroos. When I come in at night from work, I get the enthusiastic one that kind of devolves into something that sounds like Hamburglar from the old McDonald's ads:

    "RoooOOOOOOOooooooo-robba-robba-robba!"

If I'm ignoring her when I'm getting changed and she wants attention, I get just a full-on baroo:

    "RoooooOOoooOOOOOOOOooOoOOooooooooo"

When my in-laws come to visit, all bets are off. She loves "Grampa-daddy". She hits all kinds of octaves when he comes to visit.

When it's walkie-time and the wife and I are lazy about getting ready, she whines a lot. This also happens if we're eating on the other side of the kiddie gate to the kitchen and not sharing.

Then there's the low growl. Like the threat of a baroo but it never materializes. Usually this happens when I'm petting her after coming in from work…after a full-on baroo.

Then there's those high-pitched noises that come out of the other end that usually mean it's time for me and the wife to clear out of the room for a minute or two. 🙂

  • Senji makes a variety of noises. If he wants to go out first thing in the morning, he makes these sneezing/indignant snorting noises or…if it's really urgent, he follows it up with "ah-roo?", which almost sounds like a yawn. He baroos for various things. There's his "I'm mad at you baroo" when I go to work. There's his "I'm happy to see you baroo" when visitors come. And there's his long-winded "I can sound just like the fire siren baroo" when the local fire department's siren's go off. There's also another noise he makes that sounds just like Chewbacca from "Star Wars"...when he's REALLY frustrated or if someone leaves the house without saying goodbye to him. He also whines when he sees a squirrel or rabbit through the window and wants to go outside or if there's fireworks. The city police should hire him, because he'll also let out a single "WOOF" if someone drives by too fast on the street when I'm walking him. Of course, he also growls at certain people/other dogs, especially teenage boys. And he makes the "tasmanian devil" noise if anyone (i.e. the vet) tries to pick him up.

  • Kaycee does the occasional howl that only lasts for about five seconds, but thats only when i take the kids to school and even then it's only once in a blue moon. She does cry out when her dad is playing a tad too rough. Wow, i must have the quietest B out there.

  • EL D is pretty quiet. He does the Ah-roo when he yawns and he has a weird awww/baroo/yap/yike when the phone rings. Never gotten a full blown barooooooo out of him.

  • Tasmanian Devil. That's the only sound Jazzy makes, but it's never been directed at a human, only Gypsy and Keoki.

Keoki occasionally gives a baroo, but not to frequently. There's no particular occasion, but he's usually talking to the kids.
He tries the Tasmanian Devil when he's annoyed at the other dogs or when I drag his fanny out of bed, but sadly, he has the wimpiest growl I've ever heard. I think if other dogs ever heard him, they'd laugh. Poor guy.

  • Our girl's very quiet too, except for her yawning creaks in the morning and the occasional barroo if we've been away from home too long.

  • Mornings, several harumph yawns, followed of course by a good shake.

Company, huge baroos, especially for girls!!

When he doesn't want to do something but will do it anyway - a very directed yawning haaarrrumphhh

cage - if I don't get him out in time, or I am outside mowing or any other time he knows I am there - a screaming dying 2 year old child sound that would make anyone think he was being tortured in the most awful way.

  • Cody is pretty quiet, Shasta does bark…mostly at Cody when he is bothering her or has her chew.
She also barks when folks as me if these are the "barkless" dogs...
anything to make mom look foolish, when I say "yes"!

I know it sounds like a baby crying, but it's indeed Nike. Maybe telling Mia he wants the blue bed?!?

  • Jack has been starting to make more and more noise, probably because everytime he does, I praise him lavishly and talk to him about it. The other day he thought I was taking too long to take him out while I was talking to my mom on he phone, so he streeeeetched and oooooouuuuaaaaawwwww-ed really loud, and my mom was really startled, she was like "What's wrong with my grand dog- is he okay?"

Yeah, he's fine, he is just voicing his displeasure with his mommy. 😃

**All but the Hambugerler noise discribes Jack to a T! BUT he does this new "purr" if you will ONLY when he is sleeping with Aiden!! Oh and a very high pitched Squeek after every yawn! lol

    😞 I miss him…

He sings when we start to play wrestle with him and throw the rope around...he gets SO excited. When my husband "pounces" at Jack he gets a short burst of energy like he was plesently caught of guard by it and he Barroooo roooo ROOO rooooo's Every time!!!

THATS when I really love me some Jacker!!!! hehee**

  • Seren Jane doesn't make too many sounds, only occassionaly when we've picked her up from the groomer does she sound a bit like a baby. Not her favorite thing. Now she does make a low growling sound if you acciently roll on her at night or try to move her over in the bed, real grumpy then.
She does seem to enjoy listening to the sounds of other basenji's that I've found on the Internet.
