More than one heat??

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Kali's in heat again, and this has confounded my family and I because we thought that Bs were supposed to go into heat once a year in the fall. Did I read somewhere that having more than one dog can affect the cycle?

    Someone fill me in please!

Not all Basenjis "read" the same books with the rules. There are some Basenjis that do indeed have two seasons a year.

  • It is becoming more and more common for bitches to have 2 seasons a year now my bitch included. I know of several bitches that have 2 a year.

  • There are some bloodlines (pedigrees) that are known for two seasons.. and I know people that have imported from Australia that have had really strange seasons with their US dogs, since the breeding season there is reversed from ours…

  • Mercy mercy!!!
I know Kali isn't one of mine..
and everything that comes from my home cycles 2x a year…
there was even the really nutty year that De La cycle 4x in 14 months...
    now THAT was crazy!!!

I would even take D in for smears and she would ovulate on all those weird seasons...
had puppies on the spring season too!!

Kali just wants to be in charge...
guess what..SHE IS NOW !!!

  • Both of mine came in again this year, but in my experience, if they are around another bitch basenji that is in season, it may bring the others in also. Mine showed no inclination to going into season, and yet, first one and then the other! They did go to a show where there was another bitch in season before this.

@tanza -- I know. They also don't typically have one in June, which is why I was asking about whether she had whelped last cycle. I don't think we have a lot to go on. Not being critical, but "my dog seems to be in heat for over a month" doesn't provide a lot of information and could mean a lot of different things.

Most Vets will not recommend spay during season and unless there is a medical reason for doing it now, will recommend waiting till she is at least 3 to 4 weeks past the end of her season. I would also agree you should put it off and wait. Keep in mind however the neutered males can achieve a tie with a bitch in season, however considered "safe sex"… but since you have two males, this could present a problem, so something to keep an eye on

We had Juniper spayed about a month ago at 8 months old. Everything went well and her scar is almost healed…thankfully she doesn't seem to have lost any of her zeal! The vet said her sex organs looked as developed as a 3 y/o dog and it was they were the most mature looking sex organs he'd ever seen in 20 years of spaying and neutering. Believe it or not she went into a false labor after the spaying; about a week after the surgery her teats swelled up and when we took her to the vet he apparently squeezed out some milk! She was acting fairly normal but it was just as odd as it sounds! The vet said its rare but it can happen after a spaying because the hormone changes are similar to that of post-delivery. I did some research online and apparently false labors are common among wild wolves where the non-pregnant females will go into a false labor to provide milk and nurturing for offspring in the pack that are not their own.

@tanza: And for those of you with "elders" note that with age they do become more sensitive to heat…. while mine when younger would lay in the sun at 100 degrees... they don't now at 14+... also I find that they pant more when it is really hot That's good info…I forget about how the age makes a big difference with such things.

And many of them that have spring seasons are in a false season too. I had that happen with Mickii, many bitches will have a "puppy" season 4 to 6 months after whelping, Maggii did and Mickii followed her in, we tried to bred Mickii that spring and it was a false season. She came back in October and was bred.
