Chance Neuter Update

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • On Friday, I told my husband about Chance's surgery and how he had external stitches. One of his co-workers had her dobe neutered about a year ago. The vet she used also did the external stitches like Chance had. She had the same issues with swelling and with the fluid leaking, her dog took nearly a month to recover fully from the surgery.

  • and that is interesting that they used external stitches, that is the same place that Ann goes with Crystal and Kobey. When Crystal was spayed they did not use stitches, it was glued… maybe it depends on what Vet.... as they have a number of them. I know that Ann has to fight to make sure she sees the one Vet that she likes there

  • I am not sure if they did "external" stitching. I took a picture the other day due to it being so red. Here is a rather close up of the suture. He is still really swollen and red.

Yes this is odd…I don't usually take these types of pictures of my dog.

  • It is a little hard to tell but I didn't see any stitches that would have to be removed. Those are external stitches where you actually can see the stitches. Nicky was had internal stitches and glue. Some animals can have a reaction to the glue which may cause the redness but Chance looks really red in that picture.

  • His stitches should dissolve on their own.

  • Yeah, I thought I saw dissolving stitches…but that looks pretty bad; not so much the incision, but the surrounding skin looks really irritated; I am glad you followed up on it.

Side note: Tim looked over while I was viewing the pic...and he was like 'what in the h&ll are you looking at!!! nevermind...I don't want to know' He wouldn't give me the chance to explain!!!

Well, Vanessa...I think you've got your first entry for Chance's blog, "...and then after the dreaded snip-snip, she actually posted a close up of it for all the world to see! A close up!!! I'm ruined."

At least till the first time she comes in season… then you are in for a real shock!!!! These girls turn into "sluts"... totally!!!!!

  • Not always. Rally has always remained firm in her belief that Nicky would never be the father of her puppies, EVER! She also would prefer that he not sire any of her grandchildren either, even if he is neutered.

Yeah….a couple of mine would NEVER fall into the "slut" category. More like the "nun" category ;)

@alibobo Echoing what Sally (and Liz McCargo) has suggested re: not spaying/neutering, at least at this young age. There's a very insightful and thoroughly informative booklet by the "Puppy Culture" founder on the subject. It is chockful of the latest scientific/medical/genetic research and also takes into consideration the social "pressure" of neutering/spaying one's pet. (BF should read a few pages if he prefers facts to oft repeated false tales) https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet/ Whether to neuter/spay is an important decision and so is its timing should you decide to have the operation.

Yeah, Jazzy's mom… it's okay, I guess I was being a dope about that! Sometimes I get all flustered about an issue and don't quite see the irony in things... no apology needed.

Totally unrelated. Jabari, I can't tell you how it warms my heart to hear "aloha" and "mahalo". Oh warm and fuzzies :) My family is still on Maui as my little sis is only in high school. Our Riley is getting the big snip in probably about 10 days. Poor little guy. I think it's the non-laser kind. We haven't had a comprehensive exam w/ the new vet yet but she comes highly recommended from a breeder out here. I just wish she accepted AKC's comped vet visit certificate you get for registering :/

I have never had a problem with boys after being neutered… but since it has only been a week and 1/2 could be that he is still healing.... But again, I have never had that problem. If it continues I would certainly talk to your Vet..,
