Trixie has the run of the house!

Basenji Talk
  • Again I know I have been away too long but things get so busy! Just wanted to let everyone know that we have hit a milestone with Trixie! She does not need to be locked up any more in her crate during the day!!!!!! We started by leaving her out for just a little while each day and found that nothing was being shredded or destroyed. She is now on her own with her big sister Josie of course all day! Nothing is ever touched (bedroom doors and bathroom doors are always SHUT!!) But things have gotten so much better! She does still have her moments at night when we are all home! SHE IS A BIG ONE FOR ATTENTION! But so far so good!!:)

  • I hope we are able to do that one day.

  • Wow. I am impressed. We're still at the stage where she won't be crated, can't stand to have one of us out of her sight, and if we're ignoring her she grabs something she isn't supposed to and runs all over the place until we have to pay attention and play. We're having dreams of an adult dog…......hopefully she'll get there someday.

My Basenjis are 6 and 3. We live in Florida and I usually run with them 1-2, sometimes 3 miles. My run is still just a trot for them, but I let them stop and sniff and potty whenever they need/want, and I just do squats while they do it :). On the 3-milers, I am sure to bring water or let them stop and drink at the beach which is the turn around point. I also wet them down before hand.

@Sass7656 - Many a Basenji would prefer to be only dogs..... and certainly I agree with crate training, I do not believe in leave 2 in one crate regardless of the size.... next to each other but in separate crates.... I agree with Debra, you could have just as easily come home to a disaster....

Make sure you use a good cleaner to get rid of the pee/poo smells. I think often we think its clean, but the dogs can still smell the area, and think, ok, this is where I go…We had an issue with a b peeing on the bed. Using an cleaner that breaks up the "matter" was heaven sent to us.

Welcome to my world…my new male Basenji started marking when he walked in the house and then my Rocky boy decides he needs to mark too. I've been walking around with a spray bottle of Simple Green and rags - not to mention yelling, "Go outside to pee!" a lot. Finally, today the p***ing contest stopped. Whew. (I didn't mention I have four females and one foster female who is not spayed!) Watch the vinegar, I used it and the carpet smells like a salad when the air is humid. Yuck. I've been steaming with simple green, then rinsing well with water and 1 cup of Febreze Concentrated Fabric Freshner. I buy it in the gallon size.

$2000.00 for astro turf!!! Wow! I've seen that short green carpet which looks like grass and that works really well. I don't think its called astro turf though since it is much shorter. You can find it at camping stores or even Home Depo. Its not really that expensive and it is easy to clean with a hose.
