Cicada aka Locust Hunting

Basenji Talk
  • Any one know anything about basenji's liking to hunt, root, and eat cicada?
We have a rescue, Cammie, 2 months today. for the past 2-3 days the cicada are swarming and when I walk her she roots around the trees and before I know she's caught one and ate it!!!! Today, she did a vertical jump of 2-3 feet trying to catch one as it flew by us. She was so preoccupied with them that she wouldn't even potty. I figure this must be an ancient breed instinct; maybe that is why they were gifts to the egyptians - to help get rid of the cicadas after God swarmed egypt with them. any thoughts and ways to keep her from doing it would be appreciated. i try very hard to keep an eye on her when she starts rooting but sometimes she is just tooooooooooo fast!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amen to that… and yes... they are "yummy".... for your Basenji...gggg

  • haha! Thats too funny! I can just see your b- jumping to catch one! Just a little extra protein!

  • That is a really good description. I can almost see her doing the hunt for cicadas.

Ive seen Mica chase butterflys, and dragonflies for quite a distance while on walks. She also gets excited about flies… to the extent that she will wait for me to "capture" the fly in a glass than set a paper lid on top if it is up on the ceiling and than she'll almost shriek ( in doggie language) as I bring it down to her level for her to capture it and munch it. She eats flies.

  • My previous beastie would go after june bugs - EL D only eyes the dragonflies.

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

So I've not given up on this. I went back to rainshinefoundation.org.au and researched it a bit. It looks legitimate to me, and I'm really skeptical. This isn't an endorsement. They claim they are funneling the majority of donations back to the people they are providing assistance to. I could get behind this. Is a Basenji Hunting Bell worth $300 USD? In my best Texas accent, "Hell Yeah!" If they really are sinking the percentage of money they receive back into direct support as they claim on their website... it's hard NOT to get behind that. I'm still trying to verify that. Feel free to chime in. Coconut is too big. Western Buckeye is too thin. If the above is legit... I don't want to compete. I don't want to make something that mimics those from Africa. If it's legit... I'd rather support the cause and spend the $300 USD. So mine have to look different. They have to resonate sound. Which wood? CNC engraving? Laser engraving? Slots? Collar? Clasp? How do I support Basenjis? Tooling is going to cost a bit. I think I have have the bell figured out. I may also have the clappers figured out too, but I need to test all of this. The part that concerns me is the collar. Weaving, macramé, braiding, sewing... Anyway... these are thoughts in motion...
