Silly Basenjis AKA Larry, Curly & Moe

Basenji Talk
  • I just gave out 3 nice new 12 inch bully sticks to 3 nice dogs. 1 each, right? Topper took his under the table to chew in peace, Ed left his to go and "dog" Topper and try and steal his. Meanwhile Nicky stole Ed's. We let Ed 'steal' the one Nicky had abandoned. Now Nicky went to 'dog' Topper, Ed grabbed hers again. I took it and tried to lure her away from Topper, she took it into the other room and left it, ran back to sit beside Topper and put her face next to his. The we repeated most of this adventure a couple of times. Ed left his to come and dog Nicky, who in turn is dogging Topper. …... 3 dogs, 3 bully sticks...only 1 dog actually gnawing away happily, 2 others grumbling and wanting the one they can't have.

Topper, pack leader, often won't even chew them the first day, lets the kids soften them and then gets serious when they are about half eaten. Tonight he is 'da boss, chewing like a king while his pack sits and drools.

Silly dogs, all they have to do is go into the other room and get the ones they left there.

LOL such little toddler babies, aren't they? Don't you wish we could put their name on their treats so they don't get them mixed up?? Ha ha!! Sometimes it doesn't pay to give mine treats - they both want the other one - then we have an all out cat and mouse chase around the sofa. I guess it's their game - a bit annoying for me though. :(

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
