Silly Basenjis AKA Larry, Curly & Moe

    I just gave out 3 nice new 12 inch bully sticks to 3 nice dogs. 1 each, right? Topper took his under the table to chew in peace, Ed left his to go and "dog" Topper and try and steal his. Meanwhile Nicky stole Ed's. We let Ed 'steal' the one Nicky had abandoned. Now Nicky went to 'dog' Topper, Ed grabbed hers again. I took it and tried to lure her away from Topper, she took it into the other room and left it, ran back to sit beside Topper and put her face next to his. The we repeated most of this adventure a couple of times. Ed left his to come and dog Nicky, who in turn is dogging Topper. …... 3 dogs, 3 bully sticks...only 1 dog actually gnawing away happily, 2 others grumbling and wanting the one they can't have.

    Topper, pack leader, often won't even chew them the first day, lets the kids soften them and then gets serious when they are about half eaten. Tonight he is 'da boss, chewing like a king while his pack sits and drools.

    Silly dogs, all they have to do is go into the other room and get the ones they left there.

    LOL such little toddler babies, aren't they? :rolleyes: Don't you wish we could put their name on their treats so they don't get them mixed up?? Ha ha!! Sometimes it doesn't pay to give mine treats - they both want the other one - then we have an all out cat and mouse chase around the sofa. I guess it's their game - a bit annoying for me though. :(

    Thanks for checking with basenji people regarding suitability of basenjis as therapy dogs! While I have known of a couple who were used as therapy dogs, as a rescue volunteer, I've also taken in basenjis from families relinquishing them out of fear for the safety of their special needs children. Either seek an adult (over two years old) with the right personality or a carefully bred pup whose parents have the right personality. For the pup, correct early training is very important. Through my volunteer activities, I have had many opportunities to see the results of less than ideal early training. I hope they are successful in finding the right dog for their family.

    B's don't like rain but even in Holland there is always a dry spell to walk them. When it's cold, they wear coats, if it is wamere and it rains, the wear raincoats. It works fine! Enjoy!

    There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

    @Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

    @jenniferever: ive had raleigh a little over a week, lol. i know – VERY SOON to be complaining about him & the cats. he's now used to them, and they're used to him. i unfortunately had to get rid of 1 cat because he was getting very aggressive with raleigh, but i was meaning to find that cat a new home before i got raleigh anyway. one thing that bugs me about raleigh is that he lunges at the cats. its kind of like an abrupt bow-- like BOOM! GOTCHA! and the cats of course hate it. squiggy does this. He is trying to play, which the cats go hide until he is out of that mode. He also "fleas" the cats. But the cats like it best when he just bathes them. At least my B does not have to worry about cat hair :) I have 2 sphynx:p Glad to hear your group is getting along.
