Watery eyes??

  • i feel like i've seen a post about a basenjis eyes watering before but i cant find it, so what could be the reason for eyes watering?? i have to wipe them every couple hours.. any ideas?

  • An eye injury like a scratch. I would get in to see a vet and have it looked at. Two weeks ago, one of our girls had a watery eye late in the evening, next morning it was swollen shut. She had been scratched in the eye by the cat. She finished up her oral antibiotic this weekend and will be on antibiotic ointment for the eye for another week. So far everything is healing well but she has been going in for check ups every week.

  • i'm going to call the vet and see when i can get her in, but its both eyes?? i should have mentioned we got her 3 days ago and its been happening every day.. could it be stress being in a new enviroment with new people??

  • I don't know about stress. It may be a reaction to something in the environment. Did she have any eye problems prior to being placed with you?

  • i believe the foster mom mentioned her eyes watering a little, but i will email her and get some more info..

And if that is the case and they didn't have it looked into, I would highly suggest that a visit to a board certified Ophth is in order… it is a good thing for everyone to do.. your regular Vet is not trained in eye problems that are other then semi normal... and since Basenjis can develop PRA (blindness due to their retina) it is recommend that everyone have their Basenji seen by an Eye Vet at least every two years.. again IMO

I completely agree–every dog I've had has seen the opthomologist for regular eye exams. Tyler and Zoey will be going in early next year. Believe it or not--watery eyes and discharge can be due to dry eye also--or it could be allergies. But the specialist should be able to determine exactly what the problem is.

  • thanks for the optho suggestion, honestly i didnt even know about them.. so how can i go about finding one in my area??

Mine was a referral from my regular vet–but in the SF Bay Area--there are quite a few specialists of all kinds here. You can also try the yellow pgs or a search on line.

  • If your Vet will not give you a referral you can find one on line.. here is a link

Yes, bronzing is quite common in Basenjis and often it is mistaken for possible beginning of PRA. I had a bitch like that and so was her son. You need a good eye specialist that understands and knows the breed. So, yes, that is good news for your boy….. especially seeing there is PRA in his pedigree (and my bitch & her son carried some of the same dogs in their pedigree so I am quite familar with the bloodlines)

Maybe allergies or a touch of conjunctivitis? My B has had both and the vet gave us some eye drops that took care of it. Hope your guys feel better soon!

@LovingLola: Thanks. I didn't know that they should see an opthamologist regularly. Yes, it is highly recommended, IMO for all breeds, but especially for ours that have eye problems. Like I said, once I have a base line that shows no problems, I don't have a problem with going every two years when in their prime. And it is not all that expensive at least not in the Bay Area and believe me, we are pretty pricey on Vet things….

My first Basenji would have nice bright white eyes. I would take her mnt biking with me and her eyes would be red and watery. My other 2 never experienced this. It's probably allergies. The older I get, the worse my allergies get. I have also developed new allergies. Things like Russian Olive never bothered me, now my eyes start flowing and my sinuses become highly irratated. If the concentration is high, I have trouble breathing. Talk your vet about OTC allergy medications and dosage. If your Basenji shows the same symptoms indoors and they do not improve, consider having your ducts cleaned and an electronic air cleaner installed.
