African Basenji's and standing on hind legs

Basenji Talk

  • Hey, i was wondering how many other B's out there are really good at standing on their hind legs– Sol does it to look over a barrier-- ie when he smells cows in a field with a hedge, also when he greets me. He can actually balance and jump around on two legs. My other B's didn't have recent african genes (his mother was an import) and never did this.
    feedback?

  • My b is mostly american by now and he stands on his legs to see over things and see in windows. de doesn't do it unless he really wants something, and he can't jump around as easily. he also does it a lot more when on a leash (probably because of the better balance)

Mine are not any New Af and they all stand on their hind legs, have since they were baby puppies and found their "balance"…..

  • My two do it on our walks. There's a hedge that when they come to it and they know there's another dog walking across the street, both will stand up on their hind legs to peer over the hedge. They're very nosey.

  • Hollie stands on her back legs some too… and she's only half basenji!! She stands the longest when trying to "follow" those squirrels in the trees overhead... funny dogs!!!

  • Lexi has GREAT balance. She's not a recent "import". She stands without wobbling for long periods of time. We actually thought about teaching her to walk bi-pedally on command.

  • Deke is 1/4 Af. He's grandfather is Af. He really doesn't do the hind leg thing.

  • All 4 of mine, 3 full domestic and 1 half Af, do the "dancing bear" thing.

  • I have 2 5/8 Af's that I've never seen stand like that and a half Af that does. I have two 1/4 Af's one of which can do the stand and dance.

  • mine are always on their back legs….well two of the three my male especially hes always bouncing around on them even when i take him for a walk on his lease

Hi Vickayx, First let me say Dolce looks adorable. Her white face only makes her look distinguishd. As far as I can determine the only thing mentioned in Basenji Standards is that white should not predominate for her overall appearance and from what you have written you really dont seem to be planning on showing anyway. Years ago I bred Rodesians to show but as I got older I decided that what I wanted most was a little snuggle bug and went to rescue B's. spacicfically those who had had a hard life before me. We now have 2 four legged children who are always rooing to show how happy they are. Enjoy your new baby and remember to try and not let her know she is smarted.

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

Jess - why don't you put a proposal to each of the individual clubs that they take a Discover Dogs stand. There are new people in the breed now who may be more interested. Also I do know that some of the breeds at DD this year had asked for double stands precisely to give space so that dogs could be rested without being crowded in. It wasn't a case of tired dogs biting but as you know Basenjis object to having strangers pushing into their faces. There are plenty of other breeds who would also object to this. After all I'm sure that nobody would put a dog of bad temperament on the stand. That wouldn't do the breed any good!! I remember one Crufts when one of the basenjis went for the judge and headlines were 'Biting Basenji'!! You can imagine the uproar and the disservice it did to the breed! I'm not sure who would ascertain that the information would be accurate though. I do know that some of the info on the club websites is incorrect!!!

I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D
