I always try and avoid pet stores that sell dogs now it always makes me so sad. And the prices are outrageous, and there are so many people that thing that a price like that is reasonable for dogs.
I hate also when they try and say they are rare, they do the samething for white boxers. I saw one store that had a pup the was stone deaf and since she was white they wanted 2500 for her because she is rare. the workers tried to tell me she was an albino and rare blah blah, I said no she's quite normal but because of possible inbreeding and that she comes from a puppy mill she's deafer than a doornail. I was a little loud and even though I left after that one lady followed me and thanked me.
According to the standard there are 4 basenji colors. Red and White, Black and White, Black Tan and White, (tri) and Brindle and White.
The standard describes 4 colors but there are many other on the alternative color list for our breed that is provided to AKC by BCOA. Variations such as Blues, Creams, and Saddles were considered undesirable by early breeders so are not listed in the standard but have occurred. Many variations in color can be found in the African Stock Project such as Capped Tris, Saddles, and Blue Fawn.
There may be alternative colors listed on the form that the AKC provides but according to our standard as printed - there are only 4 - now the interpertation of the colors is certainly subject to consideration by anyone including judges - BUT if the AKC lists of alternate colors is something that is used - that gives the AKC more standing in defining the breed than the National Breed Club.
If the BCOA want's something other than 4 colors as acceptable - they should do so. ONe only has to look at the furor in the Doxie club on the issue of Piebald no being excluded after winning BIS - to see how explosive not defining colors can be.
Probably more than most want to discuss or ponder.

Siri is a blue fawn but the color isn't done justice in pictures. You really have to see a blue fawn in person to get the full effect of the color.
BCOA provides the list of alternate registerable colors to AKC. It is at the discretion of the National Club. There are no disqualifying faults in our breed and though the 4 colors listed in the standard may be preferred there is plenty of historical evidence that they are not and have not been the only naturally occurring colors in the breed. Again, I urge anyone interested in color in the basenji breed to spend some time reading the articles and viewing the different dogs on the African Stock Project Site.
From a judges perspective - the colors in the standard do not say 'prefered' Here is what the standard says:
"Coat and Color
Coat short and fine. Skin very pliant.
Color–Chestnut red; pure black; tricolor (pure black and chestnut red); or brindle (black stripes on a background of chestnut red); all with white feet, chest and tail tip. White legs, blaze and collar optional. The amount of white should never predominate over primary color. Color and markings should be rich, clear and well-defined, with a distinct line of demarcation between the black and red of tricolors and the stripes of brindles. " That seems pretty clear to me.
Now we all know there are variations - I have seen some very nice saddles and nice trindles - if they were in my ring - I would consider them BUT if 2 animals are equal in every way but one is a unique color- MOST judges will award the one that is closest to the standard in color.
The ONLY knowledge that most judges have - is what we as a parent club give them. If we want to amend the standard to say "preferred" we should present that option to the membership. If we want the "a good hound can't be a bad color" type of statement - we then need to present that option to the membership.
The way the standard is right now - if someone was a provisional judge and being observed by the AKC rep - and put up an odd color it would be considered against 'type' and that provisional would most likely get a bad review.
The AKC has alternate color options so that the paperwork most closely reflects what the dog looks like. In some breeds - an off color - is NOT registerable as per the parent club.
I personally am more concerned about the structure of the dog and the way that structure allows the dog to perform the functions for which it was bred. I doubt if prey cares if they are chased and run down by a blue, red or zebra stipe. 
I just hate it - when I study any breed and standard when it doesn't reflect what is being presented. My Favorite was at a breed study when they handed out an illustrated standard and 15 judges were looking at it and they said, "Oh don't pay any attention to the picture on the cover - it's a famous dog from a long time ago but no one likes it and it's structure is all wrong." Now what use it that!
I used the term preferred because our standard does not have any disqualifying faults so colors other than the ones described in the standard are faulted but the do exist. Saying there are only 4 colors of basenjis is false even if the standard only describes 4 colors. The other colors can be registered, shown, and bred. Since they are considered faults one could say they are Not Preferred. Just as a dog with a straight front is not preferred but are still shown and still win.

Yeah, it is a hairless kitten (not very cute in the pic though) He liked to unroll Squiggys tail and watch it roll up again.
I will try and take some better pictures this weekend.
