B's in cars

Basenji Talk

  • Did you get approved from BRAT for another dog. I know you were waiting to hear from them.
I use seat belts for both of mine. They work really well, except for the one Wyatt chewed through:rolleyes:

  • Well I'm happy happy happy to say that I have a scheduled home visit for next wed. so I'm very excited about that. Still no B's around my area but hopefully this will speed up the process and maybe even get them to transport.
As for the seatbelt…well like I said Champ wiggled out of it but I'm definetly going to look into the one that straps to the halter and car seat, can't see how he can come out of that.

  • We crate our dogs for long trips. No extra seats for them

  • We crate them on all trips, long and short.:)

  • wish we had the room that seems to be the safest.

The seat belt type would be the next best bet. We used to let them run all over the car…...no more.

  • no good either since he's wiggled out but I'm going to try the one that attaches to the harness….it has to be better than me holding him in the front seat

Without question. Someone on this forum had one poop in her consol while it was loose in her car when she left the vehicle for a short time.:D Went in places she couldn't clean.:D One of the funnest things I've read on the forum, but it illustrates a point rather well.:D

  • Our has the tendancy to want to climb in your lap while driving then sit up and stick his butt in your face. Or Female used to have the nervious dripper effect- drooling & spit bubbles coming out of her mouth.

The other great reason or a crate is you can attach a crate fan if you do ever have to nleave them alone for a very short time.

I have seen dogs get heat stroke at dog shows.

  • yeap I read that one. Actually this weekend I thought we were going to have the similar situation. I literally had a bag strapped to his behind and holding a cup in case he needed to pee….coming back from a long trip and stuck in traffic.

  • the whole thing is really for safety purposes…that is the seat belt.

  • Yep ours would like to climb to the front & drive   if we didin't strap them in. DH likes the harness I prefer the crates.

  • yeah what is up with the standing on the dashboard, hunting style with there paws on your chest and butt on your face?

  • Tayda and Lenny travel in a soft sided crate in the back seat. Its a canvas crate with mesh windows and it collapses flat. Its really convenient and they have become very used to it. Lenny just jumps right in, and Tayda I have to lift into the car (she's a wimp). I also have a smaller wire crate that would fit in the back seat but I have not yet used it…

I have never tried the seatbelts but I have had them loose in the car before and I can't stand the hair everywhere... and they do try to drive.

  • We use the seat belt/harness type for both of them. They're in the back and stay put. They just curl up and sleep.

@DebraDownSouth: Great pictures. :( Krunzer, as the aunt of a niece with Downs Syndome, who has served on coalitions for and MHMR boards, I do want to say the use of "retarded" as a slur is really offensive. I cringe over that use as much as I do the "that's gay" comments, or "Jew down on the price" etc. It's just hurtful. And btw, not singling you out and I have also used words common (like gyped and Indian giver) before I really thought about the connection. Just wanted to share my response, not meant as any type of insult to you personally. I am sorry I guess I just did not think when I was writing it. Thank you for pointing it out and I will try to be more courteous in the future. Sometimes things just come out of my mouth(or typing) and I don't think of the connotations first, I really need to try to be more diplomatic on here and in every day life! :)

I wish they could go everywhere with me but I couldn't imagine trying to get them on a plane. We are going to lake Erie in a couple week for a long weekend and they are coming with us. This campground is very dog friendly, this is the campground's annual halloween party before shutting down for the winter. Everyone is asking us to bring our dogs and of course they will be dressed up in costumes. After that we are taking a week to go to Cancun. Dog's can't go but will staying with a friend that has 1 acre fenced and her 3 dogs and mine were practically raised together. So we call it a sleepover. Everyone plays until exhaused so not a lot of time to get into trouble. I will miss them while I'm gone but know they are in great hands with my friend.

@Nemo: I think Jon Curby (from the US) was one of the judges. Cool. I noticed that!

Does he know sit or down? If not, should teach him… and then when your daughter comes out of her room, she should immediately have him sit.. (would help at first if she has treats for him)... then she can reward him for doing a behavior that is acceptable... I was thinking the same thing. This is how I got caesar to stop jumping up on people at the door when he would try to greet them.

It is amazing how smart they are, but I worry that not only could the house have burned, but they may have been hurt as well. Anyone of us who has kids knows it can take just a millisecond. (I guess we all have our B kids.) When things are just too quiet, I go hunting too!
