Someone dumped three b puppies

Basenji Talk

  • please keep us posted. BRAT should definately be able to help!

  • BRAT is wonderful…keep us posted PLEASE...how sad that someone could do that, they should be prosecuted if found...hope the thrid pup is found soon and safe...

  • Well, a family we trust has the 1st little boy and another is considering the little girl but the 3rd (girl) we could not catch and she was hit by a car this morning… makes me so angry, the dogs have been overfed and have their nails clipped so I am unsure why someone would choose to dump them like that.

  • How sad….. glad to hear that at least 2 have made it..... How do you know the nail were clipped?.... and overfed? Just throwing something out... are they "fat" due to maybe worms?

  • We took her to the vet and they said the nails were clipped…. also had her checked for worms and she does not have them... I think she was overfed because she is fat:o So that is just my opinion.

  • She'snot pregnant, is she?

  • well, if she is so is her little brother we placed Wed. :)

  • Well, You never know! Maybe, hmmmmm, nah!

  • That is true, if they are eight months, it is possible that she has been in season and her brother bred her… regardless if he is fat also, you might want to have the bitch watched or checked out just in case

  • OK, SO i CALLED MY BREEDER AND SHE SAID THAT THE dogs were americanized Basenjis while mine was an Avangar (sp?) African Basenji. She said that the American ones were more squat and shorter. We did not pay for papers on our dog and she said we could pay her for them if we want to.. $200)

  • It is against AKC policy for breeders to charge extra for papers. If the dog is from an AKC registered litter a breeder is supposed to give the buyer the puppy's registration papers at the time of purchase unless there are in the contract specifically stipulated obligations that must be fulfilled before they are released, such as, spay/neuter.

    Who is your breeder?

As Lisa, it is not an acceptable practice by AKC rules to have people pay extra for the papers. All papers should go with the pup. This is also not an acceptable practice of the Basenji Club of America

  • wow, I did not know that. She gave me the name of the mom and dad but said she did not register the litter because she just sold them as pets and to register my dog she would have to pay to register the whole litter. She said she sells her stud eveery year to prevent crossbreeding. The breeder's 1st name is Melinda and she lives in southern Illinois. I have her phone number and picked the puppy up in person so I hve her address also. The stud was already sold but his name is Achin-roth ( I am sure I am spelling that wrong). I do know she was ill at the time I bought our dog and had just had back surgery… that is why she was selling them at a reduced price. At the time I did not know enough about Basenjis to request paperwork.

I would be AMAZED, like eat my hat amazed if your dog is an Avongara dog. Avongaras are pretty tightly controlled by the breeders that have them…I can't imagine a breeder like the one you are describing getting her hands on one, let alone two. I would hazard a guess that your breeder lied to you on many accounts. It is possible (likely?) she did not register the litter with AKC because at least one of the parents is not AKC registered. She then most likely set the price for the papers so high, than no normal person would actually want to pay extra for them...so she never had to admit that the dogs couldn't be AKC registered. OR the dogs were sold to her on a Limited AKC registration...this means their breeder never intended for them to be bred, the breeder sold the pups with the intent that the would be spayed or neutered. AKC will not register pups born from dogs registered with Limited Registrations.

  • This is why it is so very important that people research breeds and breeders before buying a pup… And PLEASE don't get me wrong, I am sure that you and others that have purchased their Basenjis from BYB (Back Yard Breeders or Pet stores whos pups come from Puppy Mills) love them very much... and that is a good thing. But you really have no idea about the back ground of your Basenji. Health, temperament, nothing... and honestly even if you have papers, unless you have a DNA test, you can't even be sure that the parents listed on those papers are for real. I know of a person in GA that purchased a male from a BYB that was getting out of Basenjis .... the Male was a Brindle.. the pedigree of this dog indicated that it was genetically totally impossible that this dog came from these parents and be a Brindle....
I know that many think that the price of a pup from responsible breeders is "too" high, but remember that we do lots of health testing before breeding, we put lots of money in to raising that litter the right way with socialization and not placing those pups until at least 8 to 10 wks old if not longer..

    OK... off the soap box!!!

  • Avongaras are listed in the African Stock Project, http://www.basenji.org/african As Andrea said, breeders of Avongaras are pretty particular about their placements. A dog is only considered an Avongara if it is 100% from the 87/88 imports or the new 06 imports. When talking about Avongara blends most people usually consider less than 25% Avongara to have more influence from their more domestic heritage. If you know the spellings of you dog's sire and dam you can try looking them up in the pedigree database, http://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com

  • I guess I am just blessed to have gotten a great dog. I am not sure whether she is actually pulling my leg or not but since we are not planning to breed our boy then I am not going to pay her to register the litter. As far as what he looks like, he is taller and leaner than the others we found (actually he is the most gorgeous dog I have seen) but hey, I have nothing to prove so African or not he is def a purebred Basenji and I hope everyone on the board gives their dog as much love as our guy gets. I do thank God he doesn't have the bahavior issues I read about on here! LOL

  • You should fine out for sure who his sire and dam is… might be some clues there for health information... also, this person should be made know since she is doing unethical business...

  • I think at this point it's not really a huge matter of whether your dog is African, whether you want to register w/AKC, {nor how much love you give him}, but of doing something to get a handle on this breeder. If she's not breeding well, and if she's passing herself and her dogs as something they are not, she needs to be stopped.

And, as Tanza said, getting some picture as to the health history of your dog's family tree.

A campsite would be good for them to roam around. When we take on vacation, I also make sure to visit any local pet cafe so they could eat food we usually don't cook.

@lvoss: It has been raining most of the day here and L'Ox has been unenthusiastic to say the least about going outside. He has been doing really well on potty training and is starting to ask to go out but you could tell every time he actually got outside he was horrified by all the wet. So his remedy was to run to the edge of the covered porch and pee and rush back in. His dilemma was how to do the rest of his business without melting in the rain? So while I was in the kitchen gathering up the dog dishes I hear a clatter and see a little puppy butt escaping into the garage through the cat door. I follow him out there only to find him pooping near the cat's litter box. I guess I should be glad that he seems to be using his brain for good rather than evil right now. My little girl was like that but got out of the habit. She realized that going in the house was naughty (she wouldn't go on the toilet training mats we got her) and even though she hated her feet wet she went on the grass anyway and when she came inside she did the basenji thing and she licked it off her feet.
