My Sick B

Basenji Talk
  • WELL, Jack was diagnosed with Lyme Disease a few weeks after we rescued him.:( He woke up with joint pain in his rear leg, (he wouldnt walk on it) and he lost his B appitite. We got him on medication right away. and he's doing much better, although, lyme will never go away. Well poor Jack, this week, got an ear infection and his appitite isnt so good. hmmm…WELL i hope it gets alittle better, he seems to be doing better, we are cleaning out his ears everyday. but its Navy Vets. and im sure they are great, but they seemed to be rather quick about getting him in and OUT of the office quickly. I really hope his lyme isnt flarring up again... WELL i guess we will just see...anyone with lyme?? besides me?

  • I am SO sorry to hear about Jack. He is such a cute little fella (deceiving aren't they?).. Thoughts and prayers to Capt Jack!

  • I'm sorry to hear that about your B boy. And you're right…military vets are really only there to cater to K9...so they try to get the "civvie" pets in and out quickly. (knows from personal experience...AF brat and spouse)

    Hang in there!

  • I don't know for sure, but my vet told me that Lyme disease was highly treatable in dogs? Is that not true??
I'm so sorry to hear that your pup isn't up tp snuff…sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way....((healing hugs))

  • I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Jack. He is very lucky to have an attentive mommy like you. Just hang in there, Im sure it will get better. I do not know anything about Lyme disease but I have a vet appointment tomorrow morning and I will ask for you and let you know what I find out. Good luck!!!!

  • Lyme is treatable, it cant be cured, but if caught early its very treatable, but little symptoms come and go…no stopping that. :(

  • I don't know who your vet is, but we really (REALLY) like the Noank Mystic Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Sminkey handles Sophie and Stick with care and seems to know about basenjis in general.

Not a big fan of the other local Vets in our area.

Sorry to hear that Jack has been getting sick.

  • I am sorry to hear that Capt Jack is not feeling well. I have had first hand experience with USAF vets and I take mine off base, even in England, if I was able to. I hope he starts to feel better soon and have his appetite return. woo woo from Jojo…

  • THANKS much!! Jack's working on feeling better!! lol

  • Sorry to hear about Capt Jack. Did the vet put him on antibiotics?

  • yea he got meds, it was only for two weeks, but it helped.

  • I am sorry little Capt Jack has acquired lyme disease. BaMica's mom had it one time and she didn't feel too good about the lyme circulating in her body. Amazing what those almost tiny invisible critters can do. Hope Capt Jack feels better with treatment and antibiotics.
    BaMica.

  • Thank you all again!!

The coat looks gorgeous - it's just the skin…I have noticed since it is persisting it down here (and cold - well it is Summer...) that the flaking is much better - I wonder if the flat is too dry for him? It has got central heating...which is till occasionally switched on - and it's nearly June :(

An intact pair is doable, but if you have a male who is really wanting to be with the female when she is on heat, better prepare your neighbours for some sleepless nights. Some can howl for hours… Besides that, it's just watching them all the time when they are together so no 'accidents' will happen. Getting a dog only to keep your other dog company is what I allways advice against. I've had 2-3-4 dogs together the last years, and from time to time I set up a webcam when I leave home so I can see what they do. I close the door behind me, they jump on the couch or in a basket and they sleep till I get home again. Never seen them play together while I was away. If it is only to keep him some company, why not a cat instead of another dog? Much easier and see cat-dog plays far more over here then dog-dog plays. A better reason to get a another dog, is that you want another dog. With 2 dogs, you also need to train them separate, walk them separate... to keep the bonding between you and the dogs stronger, then the bond between the 2 of them.

@Forever: I have been looking at him too lol my area my color and he seems sweet and he likes cats too though I can't say my cat will like him. I need to jump in and get my bratt visit done then see what happens. My problem is no fence yet. I know that is a mark against me. It is what keeps me from calling for the visit. We had plans but life happened and no fence again. Zoe seems happy with her daily walks and house play. She doesn't seem to mind being tied outside because we keep her company. I guess when the right time and b happen all will work itself out. But one thing about bratt is my worry about fanconi not sure they are tested. I worry about zoe I dont want that worry with another dog I agree with you… you already know about Zoe... and to adopt another that could be Affected... well, I certainly understand ... and FYI, they are not for the most part DNA tested... it is not something that BRAT requires... I would suppose that if you were interested in a certain dog that you could make that a condition of adoption, that he/she be tested first.... but I have no idea how BRAT would react to that...

The article I read on ginger said they started taking the ginger capsules 2 days before chemo and of course used regular meds during the chemo, but their ginger group had less nausea/vomiting than the placebos. Maybe the trick is to start early!
